4 Tsunami Analysis Tool TAT is a decision support system to help the Tsunami Evaluation on the base of any possible information. It has been developed by the JRC in order to analyse on-going Tsunami events and support or correct the automatic estimations by GDACS Initially to support the Portuguese Institute of Meterology for the National Tsunami EWS Now to support all the organizations that adopted TAT (KOERI-TR, NOA- GR, IPMA-PT, NIEP-RO, GEOECOMAR-RO, IGN-ES, CNRST-MA, ) Objectives Access to all current seismic events Access to all current online calculations or scenario calculations Launch new calculations Access to all water level on-line measurements Data Interpretation of water level measurements and comparison with calculated data Prepare messages for the users (i.e. Civil Protection)

16 Introduction In 2011, in collaboration with the Setubal Municipality, Civil Protection, Fire Fighters and the Port Authority, installed a Tsunami Alerting Device in location Parc de Albarquel at location Lat: , Lon: This device is a research product of the JRC It is intended to alert the local population around the device that a potential threat due to Tsunami may exist.

18 The connection with Baliza 2 revealed to be difficult because of preblems in keeping continuously operational the sea level station

19 Alerting routines The alerting logic is based on the detection of sudden changes in the normal sea level above the tidal sea level. Objectives are: sensitivity and absence of false alerts Currently we start alerting when the difference between the signal and the long term signal is 4 times the RMS of the difference

25 The Inexpensive Sea Level Device Tidal gauges are essential for Tsunami Monitoring in order to assess: 1. if a Tsunami occurred, 2. to understand its importance Several areas in the Mediterranean Sea without Sea Level Devices Several stations not working properly High cost of installation of tidal gauges (5 to 15 keuro/station) Maintenance

26 The JRC device The requirements of the mareographs are: High quality of the data with an error of 0.5 cm maximum Short acquisition time interval, 15 s maximum Small transmission latency, smaller than 30 s Low overall cost, less than 1.5 keuro Autonomy, at least 3 days without solar irradiation

32 Global Tsunami Informal Monitoring System Informal Analysis of Tsunami Events Worldwide: The objective of this activity is the establishment of a network of Institutions, in charge of Tsunami monitoring in their respective countries, that can support the Emergency Response Coordination Centre of EU (ERCC) in the analysis and the impact assessment of ongoing Tsunami events worldwide. A first phase of the project was aimed at training the Institutions while a second phase will constitute the first Scientific Partnership that will support on a continuous basis the monitoring activity of ERCC.
