This is the main challenge and the reason why today s cities must become smart cities Innovation and technology are the bedrock of a smart society, which requires people, companies and governments "We find ourselves at a key moment in which the necessary urbanisation of our planet will be completed during our children's lifetime and we only have one opportunity to carry it out correctly" We must always be aware that citizens are something more than clients "the panels and conferences at Smart City have contributed to show that smart cities are much more than technology or energy efficiency. They are also business and governance, creation of new businesses, innovation and jobs; always putting the citizen at the centre of it all in order to improve our quality of life"

14 standards! Are we defining or applying any domain standard? Are we trying to cooperate and build networks rather than stand-alone projects?

16 choosing the right references Are we forgetting something important? Or including something superfluous?

17 considering all the Key Factors What about privacy, security, vulnerability, resiliency?

18 all within an exponential ICT evolution How to face increasingly fast technological transformation?

19 last but not least, who pays for it? How do we found sustainable economic models for Smart Cities?

21 so we have to think SMART (i) S FROM STRATEGY What does your city want to be? Define a City Plan and, only then define your Smart City plan subject to it Consider all private and public agents, all possible stakeholders

22 so we have to think SMART (ii) M FROM MEASURE Measure Measure Measure Measure Measure..and evaluate (Remember to measure impact on what is important for your city) Example, as defined by ITU

23 so we have to think SMART (iii) A FROM ALLIANCES (or not Alone) Integrate, foster city networks You won t solve your problems on your own Though your city is unique, you share problems and challenges with other cities Why not regional, country or continental common strategies? Contribute, implement, adopt domain standards Look for synergies and sustainability, both technical and economical Private companies can (must) be allies too Those who drive ICT innovation (let them guide us through the wave) Those who operate key services for the City

24 so we have to think SMART (iv) R FROM GOVERNANCE MODEL Be Transversal Break Silos Define a Smart City governance model Draw and manage an Smart City Stakeholder Map (did I mention you cannot forget private companies?) FROM BARCELONA

25 so we have to think SMART (v) T FROM SUSTAINABILITY Both economical and technological sustainability, which serve as a good summary of previous points Develop smart policies aligned to your city needs and priorities -> money will happen to appear Use standards and join networks -> Share investments, knowledge, experiences, standards Consider strong partnerships with private stakeholders, both innovative ICT companies and city services operators Break silos, act holistically, focus on what is important for your city and your citizens
