The equipment is intended to be used as part of an integrated strategy incorporating all the accepted principals of Bridge Resource Management. Reliance on it as the sole means of monitoring the ship's navigation position must be avoided. Your use of this product and information it provides is at your own risk. 4 1 Unpacking Unpack the GyroPilot and ancillary items from the box and check no items are missing or damaged. Items shipped are as follows: GyroPilot main unit GyroPilot to AIS Pilot Plug data cable (1m unless otherwise specified) Mains to USB power supply unit (with various country adapter plugs) USB cable for charging 2 GyroPilot Overview The GyroPilot is a smart AIS Pilot Plug interface with added Gyro. The gyro serves two purposes: a. To output accurate Rate Of Turn (ROT) of the vessel b. To smooth the raw AIS heading data, that is only available in integer degrees from the Pilot Plug, and output this to 1 decimal place for use by the navigation software. All Ship s AIS data (both Ownship and Other ships) is otherwise passed over the wireless link unaltered, for use in the navigation software. The GyroPilot also outputs battery status for display by the navigation software. 3 Before Use THE UNIT MUST BE FULLY CHARGED BEFORE USE. 3.1 Charging Check the GyroPilot is switched off. Plug the USB cable into the power supply unit then plug the power supply unit into the mains. Plug the Micro-USB cable into the charging socket on the GyroPilot. 5 4 Operating 4.1 Switching on Do not switch on the GyroPilot until it has been placed on a flat surface in the required operating location. The base of the unit has a rubberised coating to help give it good surface adhesion to any flat surface. For best gyro performance, ensure it is placed in the horizontal plane. Plug the GyroPilot cable into the AIS Pilot Plug Switch on the GyroPilot. Once it is on, do not touch it as this will disturb the gyro. DO NOT TOUCH IT ONCE SWITCHED ON As soon as it is switched on, the GyroPilot will search for and find the AIS data coming from the Pilot Plug, regardless of any errors in the wiring of the Pilot Plug. As soon as ship s data is received, it will automatically initialise its own gyro calibration process. This process takes two minutes. TWO MINUTE GYRO CALIBRATION Once the calibration is complete, GyroPilot will autonomously output ROT data and smoothed heading data for the ship and pass it over the wireless connection. Please note that the GyroPilot will not autonomously correct any heading error from the ship, but most good pilot navigation software will offer the pilot the opportunity to enter a heading correction if a ship s gyro error is observed. DO NOT MOVE THE UNIT If the unit is moved for any reason, this will disturb the gyro and it will output invalid data. The fastest way to get it to give good data again is to switch it off and on again, after which it will repeat the 2 minute calibration process. 4.2 Laptop Connection The GyroPilot connects to the laptop by either a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. The suffix designators W or B in the serial number on the bottom of the GyroPilot dictate which model it is (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth respectively). For Bluetooth connections please refer to your laptop and operating system manual on how to setup a Bluetooth connection. The baud rate is For Wi-Fi connections, the IP address of the GyroPilot is X :Port 5003 where X are the digits after the zeros in the serial number of the unit. 6 4.3 Emergency GPS Operation 1. In the event that data is lost from the AIS Pilot Plug, GyroPilot will automatically set itself to GPS emergency mode and output standard GPS position and COG data. 2. The receiver is a combined GPS/GLONASS receiver. 3. The purpose of the receiver is to provide emergency functionality that is better than a smart-phone and whose data is able to be transferred to charting software such as Qastor. 4. During normal AIS operation, the receiver is switched off to save battery power. 5. The receiver automatically switches on if the AIS feed is lost for approximately 1.5 minutes. 6. Once the GPS receiver is switched on, there will be a short delay while the receiver acquires and computes a solution; this delay will vary in length of time depending on the view of the sky that it is able to see. WARNING The purpose of this GPS functionality is for emergency use when no other options are available. We strongly recommend that the internal GyroPilot GPS receiver should not be relied upon for normal navigation. GPMk1 Manual. V0.2, July

POWER BUTTON PRESSES This function is automatically enabled after 1.5 minutes of no AIS Data being received from the ship s AIS Pilot Plug. Once in this mode, only GPS navigation data is transmitted. To go back to AIS mode, it is necessary to power-cycle the unit. These operations are only available when the unit is switched on: Single quick-press Double quick-press Switches the indicators back on after the unit has gone into power save mode. The battery indicator blinks when unit is in power save mode. Switches the unit into AIS test mode which generates two test AIS messages. This is useful if a Wifi or BT link problem is suspected or if there is a need to check an ECDIS AIS setup. The AIS messages will give a position in Auckland, New Zealand. GPMk1 Manual. V0.2, July

8 5 Handling and Storage 5.1 After use When finished with the GyroPilot, switch it off and store in a suitable dry place. Recharge as soon as possible. 5.2 Long term storage If the unit is not going to be used for a long time, make sure the battery is fully charged and then once every 3 months recharge the battery. 5.3 Operating in extreme temperatures If the unit is to be used on an open bridge without an AIS installation, then in temperatures below -20 C, it is important that the unit is warm when switched on. Keep the unit in a place where the temperature is above 0 C before taking the unit outside and setting up.
