2 Intended Use The Opticom GPS System is intended to assist authorized priority vehicles through signalized intersections by providing temporary right-of-way through vehicle operator interface to the system and through the use of common traffic controller functions. Global Traffic Technologies has not evaluated this product for use in any other application. GPS Output Function The Opticom GPS system utilizes information from the constellation of GPS satellites. This data may also be used by other devices that are installed in an Opticom GPS equipped vehicle or traffic controller cabinet. This document provides details on the format of the GPS data as well as details on how to connect to the Opticom GPS equipped vehicle or intersection equipment to obtain this data. Caution Notes The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by the United States government, which is solely responsible for its accuracy and maintenance. The system is subject to changes which could affect the accuracy and performance of all GPS equipment. Although the Opticom GPS system uses a precise GPS receiver, any navigation system can be misused or misinterpreted and therefore become unsafe. It is the user s responsibility to use this position information prudently. This information is intended to be used only as a navigational aid and must not be used for any purpose requiring precise measurement of direction, distance, location or topography. Use this product at your own risk. To reduce the risk, carefully compare indications from the GPS to all available navigation sources including the information from any other NAVAIDS, visual sightings, maps etc. For safety, always resolve any discrepancies before continuing navigation. Vehicle Connections and Configurations This section describes the necessary configuration and connections to obtain the available GPS data from Opticom GPS vehicle equipment. Configuration 1. Connect a cable from the Vehicle control unit to the PC. Open the On-site software and read from device. 2. Go to the General Configuration section and select GPS Port from the Communications Section. 3. Verify that the protocol is set to GPS Receiver NMEA Messages 4. Press the Write to Device Button to apply the changes to the vehicle unit. Baud Rate, Format and data available The Opticom GPS system will output serial GPS data in the NMEA 1083, v2.0 or later format. The sentences that are available will depend on the baud rate that you select in the communication section of ITS Explorer Baud RMC only 2400 Baud RMC, GGA and GSA 4800 Baud and higher RMC, GGA, GSA, GSV Press the Write to Device Button after selecting the desired baud rate. Connections 1. Connect the White/Orange (GPS TXD -) wire of the Vehicle interface harness to pin 2 on a DB- 9 or DB-25 connector. 2. Connect/jumper the black (Ground) wire of the Vehicle interface harness to pin 5 on a DB- 9 or DB-25 connector. 3. Connect the DB-9 or DB-25 connector to the device that will receive the GPS data.

3 Important Notes: 1. GPS information is only available when the Opticom GPS system is operating and requesting preemption. If GPS data is needed when not requesting preemption, it will be necessary to follow the wiring diagram in the figure While your computer is starting up, it is important to not have the GPS serial data cable connected to the computer. The computer will likely interpret this data as input from a mouse. Your computer will behave very erratically and possibly try to install a driver for an additional mouse. Wait until the computer is fully started before connecting this cable. 3. GPS sentence descriptions a. RMC Recommended Minimum Navigation Information b. GGA Global Positioning System Fix Data c. 4 Providing GPS data while not requesting preemption GPS data is only available while the Opticom GPS vehicle equipment is fully powered and operational. When fully powered and operational the Opticom GPS vehicle equipment will be requesting preemption. If GPS data is needed while not requesting preemption it will be necessary to wire the vehicle equipment per figure 1-1. Figure 1-1

5 Providing GPS data while not requesting preemption Notes: 1. Leave ON/OFF switch depressed. 2. Connect the blue wire to a +12 VDC ignition source. When the vehicle is started the vehicle equipment will be activated. 3. Connect the gray wire to the common terminal of the relay. Connect +12 VDC (battery) to the normally closed contact of the relay. 3a. Applying+ 12VDC to the gray wire will cause unit to operate in probe priority. 3b. While in probe priority the vehicle will not request preemption. 3c. The disable light will be illuminated amber indicating no preemption (probe). 4. Connect the plus terminal of the coil of the relay to a point which will apply +12 VDC when light bar is activated. Connect the minus terminal to ground. 4a. Applying 12 VDC to the relay will close the relay which removes 12 VDC from the gray wire. 4b. The equipment will then switch to high priority. 4c. The disable light will go dark indicating that the equipment is in high priority. 5. Any automotive type 12 VDC relay that has normally closed contacts will work. 6. If GPS data needed when the vehicle is shut off, connect the blue wire directly to the battery. No relay will be needed. This will leave the vehicle equipment fully powered at all times. If in range of an intersection, the vehicle equipment will be transmitting and may request preemption. 7. If you want to run with high priority in other than Code 3 then replace the relay with a manual switch. You will then need to manually close the switch when you want to switch from probe to high priority. Logging By default each time a probe vehicle is detected by the intersection equipment it will be logged. Using the On-site software, the user may disable probe priority in the phase selector. IN NO EVENT SHALL GTT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INJURY (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, PERSONAL INJURY), DEATH, LOSS, OR DAMAGE (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, PROPERTY DAMAGE), WHETHER DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR OTHERWISE, ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE, REPAIR OR FAILURE TO REPAIR, ANY GTT PRODUCT, REGARDLESS OF THE LEGAL THEORY ASSERTED. Sale and use of the Opticom TM System is expressly restricted to authorized agencies of government customers, within their specific jurisdictions. However, because the signal generated by the Opticom system may not be exclusive, GTT does not warrant exclusive activation by purchaser. Authorized users who desire to use or coordinate use of the Opticom TM system with that of other jurisdictions must first obtain the prior written approval of each authorized user in the jurisdiction where use is sought. Since the availability of a GPS signal is out of GTT s control and is required for Opticom TM GPS system operations, GTT does not warrant against Opticom TM GPS system failures due to the unavailability of the GPS signal for any reason.
