1 User Manual January 2010 Opticom Infrared System RC790 Remote Coding Unit

2 1. Description The Opticom Infrared System RC790 Remote Coding Unit is used to remotely program Model 794 series LED emitters. The RC790 does not operate with other model emitters. With the RC790 the user is able to program vehicle class and ID, disable mode, strobe mode and visible LED behavior. In addition the user may reset the emitter to factory defaults and retrieve various information and diagnostic data about the emitter. The Model 794 LED emitters may also be programmed using ITS Link/790-CS. 2. Intended Use The Opticom system *is intended to assist authorized priority vehicles through signalized intersections by providing temporary right-of-way through vehicle operator interface to the system and through the use of common traffic controller functions. *The method of using the components of the Opticom System may be covered by US Patent Number Other U.S. and foreign patents pending. 3. Technical Support If you have questions about the system, its use, or operation, please contact your dealer or call the GTT Technical Service department at Getting Started 4.1. Batteries Remove the back cover and install 4(four) AAA batteries. Follow the diagram in the battery compartment for the correct orientation of the batteries. We recommend that new alkaline batteries be used. Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are another option. Do not combine old and new batteries as this may cause the batteries to leak, possibly damaging the RC Programming Information Before starting, you will need to determine some or all the following values to be programmed into the emitter: Vehicle class and ID Disable Mode Visible LED behavior 4.3. Range and Angle considerations The RC790 is a line of sight device. During programming, we recommend standing between 3 and 25 away from the emitter being programmed. If you stand closer than 3, the operation may be intermittent. We also recommend standing directly in front of the emitter. Point the RC790 directly at the front of the emitter. If the emitter is mounted high on the vehicle, a ladder may be necessary. Also avoid locations where the sun is shining directly on the emitter or the RC790, direct sunlight may prevent programming. It may be necessary to shut off the infrared LEDs by setting the strobe mode to inactive (Section 8) or by putting the 794 into disable mode by grounding the white wire. See the 794 installation manual for details on the wiring of the disable mode.

3 4.4. Turning the RC790 on and off The RC790 will turn on as soon as you press any key. The backlight will also illuminate. The RC790 will shut itself off after 20 seconds of inactivity. When first turned on, the RC790 will display the startup screen for a couple seconds. G T T C O D I N G v 1. 0 The Programming Vehicle Class and ID screen will then be displayed. 4 5. Vehicle Class and ID Class and ID Mode Description: The Vehicle ID includes a Class and an ID, which can be combined to form 10,000 unique vehicle identification codes. This number can then be used to uniquely identify each emitter/vehicle to the Opticom system equipment located in the traffic cabinet. Class is often used to identify vehicle type or owning agency. ID is often used to identify individual vehicles within each class. The class and ID may be combined to form one four digit number. Contact the person maintaining the coding system for your area to determine the specific code to be used. Reading and Programming: 1. Turn on the 794 emitter. 2. 6 6. Disable Operating mode Disable Mode Description: The emitter s Disable feature is activated when Battery Negative is sensed on the White wire of the Emitter Cable. (Refer to the printed emitter Installation Instructions for details on how to install a Disable Switch to use this feature.) If the emitters disable function is not used because you are disabling the emitter by removing power, then the settings for disable mode does not matter and may be left at default. When the Disable feature has been activated with the Disable Mode set to Latching, the emitter will remain OFF until the Disable Switch is deactivated (Battery Negative is removed from the White wire) and the Emitter Switch is turned OFF for at least 5 seconds. (Default Setting) When the Disable feature has been activated with the Disable Mode set to Non-Latching, the emitter will remain OFF until the Disable Switch is deactivated (Battery Negative is removed from the White wire.) If the white wire is grounded when the emitter is started the disable will be honored and the emitter will not flash. If the white wire is grounded when the emitter is started, the disable will be honored and the emitter will not flash.
