Submissions will be copied exactly as they are submitted so please edit before sending. I look forward to reading about the many adventures of our well traveled members. Enjoy the adventures shared below. Who will be next to share their travel adventures??? Member Travels Savannah and Charleston shared by Carl Crumley I'll bet a number of Camera Rochester members have made trips down south to enjoy the mild weather and see the beautiful sights. Liz and I decided to take a spring trip this year to coastal South Carolina and Georgia where we hoped to find azaleas in full bloom around the plantations in the Savannah and Charleston areas. It turns out we were about a week or two late (we arrived Savannah on April 20), and the vegetation in the area at that time was in full summer green and very lush. It was nearly uncomfortably hot in late April. I wouldn't recommend going any later in the spring or summer unless you have a high tolerance for heat, humidity and bugs. Liz suffered a pretty severe insect bite that appeared to be from a deer fly according to the pharmacist who recommended an overthe-counter ointment to treat it. The architecture in these southern cities is stunning. I highly recommend leisurely horse-drawn carriage rides around each city to get an unobstructed view of the houses and shops, and to familiarize yourself with the area for further exploration on foot. In Charleston our horses were named Sonny and Cher and were delightful and remarkably responsive to the commands of the young lady driving the carriage. In Savannah we were towed around by a retired Amish farm horse named Montague who was so slow people walking along the sidewalks were faster than we were. Our carriage driver told us: If you don't like this speed you're REALLY going to hate his other speed! Apparently Montague is known for stopping at times and refusing to move resulting in a hike back to the loading area. The good news is I was able to use slower-than-expected shutter speeds on that ride since we were going so slow. While in Savannah take a trip out to Tybee Island and enjoy the beautiful coastline. We spent a couple of hours in the surprisingly photogenic Fort Pulaski on Tybee Island. We highly recommend it for its historical significance as well as beautifully restored and maintained cannons, powder magazines (storage rooms), officers' quarters, etc. You may even want to take a tripod for some long exposures in the dimly lit areas with repeating patterns of cannon mounts, wood floors and the like. Also in Savannah a trip through the Bonaventure Cemetery is something to put on your list. This old cemetery is lush with Live Oak trees draped in Spanish Moss. Any time of day is good but the golden hours would be even better. We were there a little late in the morning after the fog had lifted and the light wasn't great, but I still grabbed a few memorable shots. Of course, no trip to the deep south would be complete without a stop at the well-preserved plantations. We briefly visited the Frampton Plantation between the two cities but spent most of our time at the amazing Magnolia Plantation outside Charleston. We made two trips to the Magnolia Plantation over two days and still didn't see it all. They have plenty of nice walking tours around the gardens that surround the house, tours of the house, and even a former slave cabin all within spittin' distance (to use a southern term) of the entrance.
5 Magnolia Plantation also offers tram rides around the property and a boat tour through the flooded rice fields where abundant wildlife can be seen and photographed. We saw and photographed herons, anhingas, osprey, turtles and yes, alligators. Spanish moss hangs over the huge oak trees making for spectacular images. There are restored slave cabins that can be visited and photographed for a little taste of what life was like during the pre-civil War period and even afterward when freed slaves continued to live and work on the plantation. Don't miss the market in downtown Charleston where modern shops replace the former farm stands and mercantile shops where slaves shopped for food and supplies for their plantation owners. A somber experience is to visit the Old Slave Mart museum, a building where slaves were bought and sold for a few years just prior to the Civil War when the city of Charleston wanted the slave auctions moved off the streets to indoor locations where it wasn't so obvious. The museum contains artifacts of the era including leg shackles, farm tools and clothing. There is also a nice display honoring Rochester's famous citizen Frederick Douglass. Yellowstone National Park shared by Tom Kredo Cindy and I spent a week this August at Yellowstone National park. This is an amazing place that is sitting on top of an active volcano. We stayed in the park at four different park lodges. The park was crowded and the accommodations were over priced, but the views were worth it. Highly recommended if you haven't been there before.
6 Adirondacks shared by Stephen Fielding This past July I traveled with another club member, Dave Braitsch, and shot these photos of Chapel Pond near Keene Valley. Chapel Pond is located at the base of Giant Mountain in the high peaks area of the Adirondacks on route 73. These photos were taken between 5:30 AM & 6:00AM. The ponds are light challenging because of high contrast as the sun rises over the peaks (well after "sunrise"). Further up 73 and north of Keene valley we shot the rise of the super moon over Oak Hill. Despite deep woods off and mosquito netting, we were eaten alive. Of course we didn't see it until a full hour and a half after "moon rise" due to the mountain. Even then the moon was quickly obscured by clouds, so all you see is my Monetesque (impressionist) moon. We also hiked on the Adirondack Mountain Reserve Club's trails along the Ausable River. About 2/3s of the way down to the lower Ausable Lake we took some time to photograph the falls. I took this shot hand held, since I left the tripod behind to minimize weight. Niagara Falls shared by Jeno Horvath I spent a day at Niagara Falls and posted these photos and others on Face Book. The falls were nice, but I posted photos of other stuff - just for fun. The trip was uneventful: Normal traffic, 1/2 hr wait at the border, good weather.
7 Opportunity for Learning: Image City Image City Critiques is a free program offered by the gallery partners to provide participants an opportunity to critique and be critiqued in a friendly, constructive, positive environment. These sessions will be consistently held on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:00-9:00 pm. Send 2-3 jpg images that are at most 1MB in size and at most 1500 pixels on the longest side to Gil Maker gmaker@mac.com. Check the Image City Newsletter for more specifics about the next meeting. If you have any questions please contact Gil or Don Menges (dmenges@rochester.rr.com). Image City has expanded its learning opportunities from the monthly critiques to workshops, courses and mentoring opportunities. There is no mail-in or online registration. Please visit the Gallery to sign up for courses. For more information, click on Opportunities for Learning! Many members have expressed an interest in more educational programs or informal classes through the club. As a result, the following members are offering their expertise to the rest of the membership. Please contact them directly to discuss details.
