Immediately following the general orientation, we have a brief workshop orientation on the porch of the Fischer Photography Center. In general, our workshops meet weekdays from 9 AM 5 PM with a one-hour break for lunch. Activities may include lectures, slide talks, demos, field trips, individual photographic assignments, studio work and individual and group critiques. Some faculty may choose to alter the 9 AM 5 PM hours to capture the best light or to travel to a photographic location. You will have 24-hour access to our facilities beginning Monday morning after orientation and ending on Friday evening at 5 PM. Staff will be available in the studios Monday to Friday 9 AM 5 PM and in the evenings Monday to Thursday 7 10 PM. On Friday afternoon, all printing stops at 3 PM. The Ranch is situated in a scenic mountain area with easy access to walking and hiking trails. Aspen is a 20-minute bus ride away. Again, this is a general template each workshop has its own requirements and dynamics that may necessitate changes in this overview. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Best, Andrea Wallace Artistic Director, Photography & New Media awallace@andersonranch.org , ext. 233

About Workshop Materials & Equipment in Photography & New Media: The Photography & New Media Department at Anderson Ranch is located in the Fischer Photography Center. Your studio fee goes towards general facilities maintenance, operational costs, and having equipment and materials on hand for your workshop. The following will be available to you during your workshop at Anderson Ranch: A 21 imac computer with a calibrated display Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printers Adobe CC software Please bring the following tools and materials to your workshop: - A digital camera and accessories: lenses, batteries, battery charger, memory cards, camera bag, cables, and a card reader. - Your camera manual - Layered clothing, glove liners, gloves, hat (Clothing appropriate for early morning excursions at high altitudes. Early mornings in mid-summer in Colorado can be cold. You may want to bring lightweight gloves, a jacket or fleece, a hat, and a waterproof layer.) - Sturdy shoes or boots Optional additional tools and materials: - Extra camera battery - A hat, sunglasses and sunblock - A reusable water bottle - A flash light Since there are no darkroom facilities available and limited amounts of inkjet printing paper it is advisable that you bring prints with you. As a traditional photographer, Kate used to print black and white negatives on silver gelatin (darkroom photographic) paper and then hand-color these. To her, this is still vastly preferable to coloring on inkjet paper but she knows most people no longer have access to a darkroom. In the pages following you will find information about inkjet paper surfaces. The aim will be to experiment with a variety of surfaces and a variety of media, so there is no right and wrong approach and no rules and infinite possibilities. If in doubt, bring everything and anything you want to experiment with. If you can only bring digital files, some of the more suitable inkjet surfaces will be available for printing at the workshop, for a small charge per print. Bring your files on a disc or a thumb drive. There will be a workshop intern with digital experience to help you do this. FAQs What kinds of images should I make to bring? Try to bring a range of images /subject matter- at least 15 prints to experiment with. Choose images without too many dark areas or heavy shadows. Don't 'overprint', or print too flat as it's more difficult to color muddy, dull or dark prints. Avoid excessive contrast, as this reduces details in shadows and highlights. It is much easier to learn to color bold simple images, so choose images without lots of finicky detail. Print the image with a border so that you have room to tape the print to a work surface. Try to bring a 'head and shoulders' portrait to learn how to color flesh. You can 'tone' your prints brown or sepia if you wish, this works well for portraits. If print images 11 x14 or larger but 8 x 10 is acceptable What else should I bring? Paint, pencils and ink will be provided for you but if you would like to bring any of your own media to experiment with please do so.

Also bring: - A set of small mixed (pointy and flat) paint bushes just a cheap set. (Stanislaus mixed white nylon) DickBlick.com or any art supply or Michaels store has these. Home Depot has 10 White nylon Synthetic for acrylic and oil made by Daler-Rowney. - Plastic pallet for ink- the kind with little wells around the edge (Art supply or Michaels store has these) - Flat Pallet for oil paint (can be white plastic picnic plates or old dinner plate or piece of plexi glass - Box of Q-tips - 1 Roll of blue painters tape from (Lowes/Home Depot) - Cotton balls-the real cotton kind, not synthetic - Some rags for cleanup - White dust mask (Lowes/HomeDepot) - Notebook and Apron Pigments to use for hand-coloring (provided at the workshop) Transparent oil paint (transpanency is indicated on the tube) I also somes use semi-transparent and opaque. I use Gamblin brand and thin it with Winsor& Newton Liquin Arista ( freestyle photographic) now makes a set of oils for hand-coloring. Color pencils soft leads are best. Prismacolor, Luminance. Photo retouching Dyes - ( Fotodyes made by Fotospeed) Pastels both oil pastels and soft (chalk) pastels. SKIP THIS SECTION IF YOU ARE NOT A TRADITIONAL DARKROOM PRINTER / PHOTOGRAPHER. info about 'silver gelatin' photographic paper suitable to handcolor color on In this digital age, traditional photographic paper is harder to find and surfaces more limited. Many surfaces have been discontinued, and many companies (Kodak, Agfa) have ceased manufacturing black and white paper altogether. Freestyle Photographic Supplies have dedicated themselves to keeping traditional photography alive and are now importing European papers previously unavailable. All this makes it hard to stay on top of what is available and what is the best surface to use for coloring. Different paper surfaces will produce different effects. Oils can be applied to any surface but it will not be absorbed into the surfaces of Glossy paper, and only barely by Satin, Pearl or Lustre surfaces. Matt surfaces absorb and hold color most readily. Some matt surfaces have a finer 'tooth' while others are courser, and have a stipple. Semi-matt surfaces are also suitable. They absorb less color and therefore give a paler affect, or require more layering (and drying ) to get the depth and density of color obtainable on a true matt surface. These also differ in their absorbency depending on the brand. Here is a list of paper that are most suitable to paint on. Resin Coated (most convenient and economical) Foma Fomaspeed Variant III VC RC Matte Adox MCP312 VC RC Semi-Matte Adox MCP312 VC RC 1 Semi-Matte Arista Private Reserve VC RC Semi-Matte Arista EDU Ultra VC RC Semi-Matte Foma Fomatone VC RC Cream Base Warmtone Matte Forte Polygrade V RC 16x20 sheets Semi-Matte Fiberbased paper (less covenient and more expensive) Foma Fomatone Classic VC FB Cream Base Warmtone Matte (132)

Ilford Multigrade MGIV FB F5K Ilford Multigrade MGIV FB W24K (Warmtone) Semi-Matte Matte Arista EDU Ultra FB VC Semi-Matte Adox Variotone Warmtone VC FB - Semi-Matte Kentmere Fineprint VC FB Neutral Tone Fine grain Semi Matte All these papers can be ordered from FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS Information about inkjet paper surfaces. What digital paper surfaces are good to color on? Good question! There are now so many brands and so many surfaces that it seems almost im to choose. What is yet more confusing is that it really depends on what medium you wish to use- and what effect you want to achieve. All papers yield different results. I do not have experience with all surfaces but here is a general guide. 1. All the digital paper that are described as 'watercolor', 'velvet', 'textured rag', 'cold or hot' press, 'etching' paper, 'sugarcane' or 'bamboo' are very absorbent, - and not suitable for oils without prepping the surface, but great for pencil, a little bit of ink and pastels, although anything wet and watery like ink can often start to dissolve the printing ink. However if we completely seal the absorbent surface with an acrylic coating, such as Clear Shield Liquid Laminate, then spray that surface with Lacquer-Mat (Suede-matte for retouching (This spray will be provides at the workshop) To get an absorbent tooth back on the surface- this means that anything you add, will not damage the printing inks 2. All the digital papers that are designed to look and feel like darkroom photographic paper and usually have names like -exhibition fiber, photo-rag. glossy, pearl, lustre matt etc, are coated, and much less absorbent and can be sprayed with several layers of Lacquer-mat suede retouch spray (supplied at this workshop) which adds a barrier and a surface that oils can then be applied to. Once prepared like this, it doesn't really matter what the original surface was. Some of the 'Pearl' and Luster papers, already have a barrier and don t need to be sprayed. Hahnemuhle Photo-rag Pearl paper has been successfully hand colored without spraying. Canvas is another interesting surface to work with, you can just paint on it like regular canvas. The difference between silver gelatin photographic paper and inkjet paper when printed is that the inkjet has a layer of dye/ ink laid down in the printing process absorbed into that surface or sitting on the surface. When we add another layer of medium, we risking dissolving or scratching or smearing that surface.

Keep in mind that Anderson Ranch is located in a remote mountain town. Some equipment and materials will be difficult to find locally. Please plan accordingly. Getting your supplies to the Ranch: ArtWorks, the Anderson Ranch Art Store, carries art supplies, tools, materials, other resources and artwork. If you plan to purchase your materials from ArtWorks, please call in advance and reserve your materials ( ). You are welcome to ship your supplies to the Ranch via UPS or FedEx. We ask that you ship them to arrive at the Ranch no more than one week prior to your workshop start date, as we have limited storage. All UPS and FedEx packages must arrive at the Ranch clearly labeled as shown below. Unidentified packages will not be signed for and will be returned. Please label your packages as follows: Your Name FACULTY NAME PHOTO/NEW MEDIA c/o Anderson Ranch Arts Center 5263 Owl Creek Road BOX 5598 Snowmass Village, CO Getting your work home: ArtWorks carries basic shipping supplies for purchase.
