3 What we love about this photo is how it draws us into the fairy tale like world of a butterfly. It's as if it was taken from a butterfly's point of view. The way the light is captured makes the background look almost like another world. The sharp focus in the foreground, combined with the hazy focus of the background is very striking in this photo. The detail on the butterfly and in the flowers is truly amazing. My name is Alexis Sharpe, I am 15 years old. I have been interested in photography for 5 years now. I have won best of show at my county fair for 3 years in a row, along with a special award, 2 reserve grand champions and a grand cham pion with my photography. I also started modeling about a year ago, which is a lot of fun. I dance competitively and have been since I was 3 years old. I draw and paint, I have won best of show and special award with my drawings at the county fair, and special merit at the state fair. I enjoy all aspects of art. UPCOMING CONTESTS We have 2 contests open right now, on the topics of Beach Birds and Seed Dispersal. Beach Birds photos can be any bird that frequents coast lines, OR any photo of the beach, but it should be a natural setting, and NO bathing suits, please. Seed Dispersal photos can include seeds spraying out of dead flowers, or falling down from trees, seeds in your hand or anywhere in nature, animals that spread seeds on their fur, the wind blowing in a tree or in grassland, and and any other way that seeds are spread, as well as on the topic of flower gardening flower arrangement, flower crafts, and using edible flowers in creative ways. This photo is simple, in terms of its subject matter, but it is in keeping with our theme, pollination, and the clear detail here, right down to the single grains of pollen, is superb. Plus the compositin and focus is excellent. Sera has been a home school student since pre school. She enjoys playing piano and violin, singing in choir, making short films, and spending times with her friends and family. She likes to photograph nature, people, and animals. She one day hopes to get scuba certified and swim with the beluga whales. Michael Hughes is 17 years old, loves biology, and his hobbies include sports, writing, outdoor activities, and photography. Photography is a hobby that he took up fairly seriously during high school. He began photographing lizards. Over time that interest grew to include birds, rattlesnakes, mammals, and anything pertaining to the outdoors. Homeschooling in Arizona's Sonoran Desert has provided Michael an awesome opportunity to pursue his hobbies. Issue #15 Flowers & Friends: Pollination 7

5 Congratulations to Kathy Balman, who has worked hard and sent us numerous photos for the past 3 photo contests including this one. Again, we are given a butterfly's eye view of this field of flowers, with crisp detail in the foreground and the contrast of a hazy background. The flowers start out crisp and gradually fade into the distance. The lighting is perfect in this photo and the composition is excellent. Kathy Balman says, "I married my wonderful husband in 2000 on my 19th birthday, and we have 2 wonderful children: my daughter, age 6, and son, age 5. In August 2011 we began our homeschool journey. Our ulti mate goal is to homeschool through high school. Right now we are eclectic homeschoolers in our approach and curricu lum. And we use a guided/gen tle learning style, incorporating a lot of unit studies, lapbooking, thematic units and literature based learning, and we take lots of fieldtrips. One of my many hobbies is photography. I love capturing our special memories. The picture of the butterfly was take at at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Each year they have an amazing butterfly festival where they release hundreds of butterflies. It is always so much fun and we get to capture some amazing pictures. I am a homeschooling mother of Malcolm Summers, a 10 year old genius with a heart of gold and an infinite desire to learn the world in his own unique way. We spend most of our time examining the wonders of the world and having many enjoyable discussions from molecules, health, and world issues, to the vastness of the universe, the caste celebrations of India, and why a bee likes pollen. I find that I learn right alongside Malcolm. Every child should have the homeschooling lifestyle. There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent. ~ Mahatma Gandhi~ This is a truly amazing close up photo with incredibly fine detail on both the bee and the flower parts. The fur on the bee's body, and the gossamer like wings are so beautiful, as are the brilliant colors. The lighting and com position are perfect. This prize is well earned. Hi, my name is Grace Whitby. Born and raised in Papua New Guinea to missionaries, I have drawn and painted from a very early age. Growing up, I read as many art books as I could get a hold of. I also enjoy taking photos. Photography is a way of recording things that strike me as interesting or beautiful and provides me with subjects to draw and paint.
