1 NORTH AFRICAN ART MAKES ITS MARK ON CHRISTIE S DUBAI SALE Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art Part I Tuesday, April 16 th at 7pm Part II Wednesday, April 17 th at 7pm Sponsored by Zurich Dubai With great contemporary art from North Africa becoming an increasing focus for international collectors, works from this region will be well represented in Christie's sale of Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish art, to be held on April 16 & 17, 2013 in Dubai. Christie s Dubai sales are divided into two parts and works from North Africa are represented in both. The part I sale includes works from contemporary artists Driss Ouadahi and, for the first time, Latifa Echkach and Mohammed Melehi while in part II, pieces by Gazbia Sirry, Omar El-Nagdi, Youssef Nabil, Chant Avedissian, Zakaria Ramhani and, for the first time, a painting from celebrated Moroccan artist Najia Mehadji. The group is highlighted by three exclusive photographs by Lalla Essaydi, whose work is included in some of the most prestigious institutions and private collections around the world and is much celebrated in the United States, where she is based. They will be sold to raise funds to support the publication of the artist s upcoming monograph. Masa Al-Kutoubi, Associate Specialist and co-head of the part II sale, said: Following the success of the focus on contemporary North African artists at Art Dubai, we are confident that this group of works will be well received by the international collectors who come to our sales. The quality of the work we have sourced from those artists included for the first time, sits well alongside some of the more established names from this region and it is encouraging to see that the moment has arrived for the profile of these artists to be raised in this way. We hope to continue to highlight works from North Africa in our bi-annual sales in Dubai and in doing so widen the scope of art appreciation and knowledge of artistic practice in the Middle East.
