3 All Worlds For me, the most pleasurable aspects of painting also present the greatest challenges; the freedom to paint whatever subject, in whatever medium or style, at a location of your choosing. This freedom can be intimidating and requires control. This year, that control has been offered through a diversity of locations and travel. All Worlds attempts to communicate an impulse and energy in mark-making through continual, physical movement; from our new home near Dartmoor to an artistic residency in South Africa and then frequent visits to West Cornwall and the familiarity and meditative quality of the coast. The title also makes reference to the personal benefit of escapism in a wild landscape from the media, who communicate an international, political climate far from the ideology of All Worlds. The show can best be described by a wall of small collages which are visual pieces of memory from a diversity of landscapes; numerous paintings I have created during the year have been torn up and then reconstructed to create new, collaged compositions of imaginary, wild places. 14 anthony garratt Born in Kent, Anthony Garratt studied at Chelsea College of Art and then Falmouth College of Arts for a degree in design. He then worked as a designer for several years in London before taking up painting full time. Anthony Garratt s painting is concerned with the weather and its impact on the landscape and on him; his research often finds him in heavy weather conditions in remote locations. His inspiration coming primarily from the landscape and the changing climate. Alongside his gallery shows, Anthony has created a number of unique outdoor installations where giant paintings are exhibited in the locations where they were painted and are open to the elements. The projects have garnered much National press and critical acclaim and his High and Low installation in Snowdonia won the Arts and Business award in Wales. Earlier this year, Anthony was invited to establish an artistic residency in the South African Wilderness and subsequently formed a collaboration with a renowned photographer. Anthony Garratt is a tutor at the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall and he lives with his family in South Devon. His work is held in corporate and private collections internationally.
