Home-School Connection Dear Family Member: What Do Illustrators Do? takes you step by step through how an artist goes about illustrating. I was surprised to learn that a lot goes on before illustrators actually draw the pictures. They think about what they want to show and how they want to draw it. Sometimes they get models to pose for them. There are many things illustrators do, and this book takes you through the whole process. This Week s Skills Comprehension: sequence Vocabulary: context clues sentence clues Spelling/Phonics: words with oy and oi Name (fold here) Word Workout WORDS TO KNOW illustrate instance sketches style suggestions textures Word Choice Tell me what words you would use to talk about illustrators. Then let s try to use the words in sentences that describe something illustrators do first, second, and third.

Conclusion You have finished your tour! You have seen art painted on cave walls. You have seen art painted on ceilings. You have met artists who painted what they saw and artists who painted what they imagined. Some of them used paints and brushes. Others poured the paint right on to the canvas. You even saw a computer painting. What will be next? Painting Through Time Thousands of Years Ago Hundreds of Years Ago 200 Years Ago to Today 33,000 years ago Around 1500 a.d a.d. 50 a.d a.d a.d. 14 Introduction Artists all over the world have been painting for thousands of years. We can see their work all around us. Art is on walls in homes and inside buildings. It is even in caves. Art museums are places where people enjoy and learn about art. Walking through an art museum is like walking through history. In a museum you find paintings from ancient times, modern times, and the times in between. Who painted these works of art? How have the paintings changed through time? Let s take a tour through the history of painting to find out. There are art museums all over the world. We can visit art museums to see paintings by famous artists. 3

4 Chapter 1 Thousands of Years Ago The first stop on our tour is a cave in France. There are paintings on the walls of caves. These paintings are over 30,000 years old. Some are red, and others are black. Most of them show animals. There are horses, rhinos, and cows. These paintings show the animals from long ago. Ancient cave paintings were found in the Chauvet Cave and the caves at Lascaux (las-koh) in France These animals are similar to those found on a wall in the Chauvet Cave. In one part of the cave, there is a handprint left by someone who lived thousands of years ago. Jackson Pollock painted Autumn Rhythm in This is an example of abstract art. You can see how painting has changed over the years. Jackson Pollock painted a new kind of picture. His style of art is called abstract art. Abstract art does not try to show realistic images. People use their imagination to decide what the picture shows. Pollock often put his canvas on the floor. Then he poured or dripped paint right from the can. He used sticks, brush handles, or even knives to move the paint. Did You Know... This piece of art was not made with paints and paintbrushes. The artist used a computer to paint this picture. 13

12 Pablo Picasso was a painter in the 1900s. He used a different painting style than many other artists. He used shapes, like cubes and circles, to show people and things. His style of art is called Cubism. Picasso did not paint many landscapes. He mostly painted people and still lifes. Still lifes are pictures that show objects, such as musical instruments and bottles. Pablo Picasso painted this picture called Three Musicians in He used many shapes in it. Some of the shapes are suggestions of eyes and noses. Another cave in France has old paintings, too. These paintings are 17,000 years old. Most of these paintings show animals. One painting, though, shows a person. This painting tells a story. It shows a man with a bird s face. He is fighting with a bison. Where did artists get paint colors thousands of years ago? They used plants, berries, tree bark, and other things in nature to make colors. They used red, yellow, black, brown, and purple in their paintings. Did You Know... In September 1940, the caves at Lascaux were discovered by accident. Four teenage boys were hiking when they found a hole in the ground. They climbed down into the hole. There they found an ancient cave with paintings on the walls. Many of the walls in the Lascaux cave show paintings of animals. These animals were important to the people who painted them. 5

6 There are ancient paintings in Italy, too. Artists painted many of them on walls. Some of the paintings were painted more than 2,500 years ago. Sometimes artists painted on the walls of tombs. Tombs are places Ancient paintings have been found in many parts of Italy. where dead people are buried. The artists often illustrated something about the life of the person who died. This wall painting was made more than 2,000 years ago. Sunflowers is one of his most famous paintings. This self-portrait shows Vincent van Gogh s style. One famous painter was Vincent van Gogh. He painted with short, quick brush strokes. He also used thick paint in many of his paintings. This gave the paintings a rough texture. Mary Cassatt was an American painter. She lived in Paris. She is known for her paintings of children. Mary Cassatt painted this portrait of herself in

10 Chapter Years Ago to Today In the 1800s, most artists began to paint on canvas. They painted pictures of people, places, and things from real life. Artists often painted outdoor pictures, or landscapes. Many artists of this time used short brush strokes. This style was called Impressionism. Claude Monet was a famous Impressionist painter. The name of this painting is Impression Sunrise. Impressionists often painted landscapes, like the one by Renoir. Did You Know... Mount Vesuvius is a volcano in Italy near the city of Pompeii (pahm-pay). In 79 A.D., Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii. Hundreds of years later, ancient paintings were uncovered. They show what life in Pompeii was like 2,000 years ago. This wall painting was painted on the wall of a house in Pompeii. Artists were still painting on walls a few hundred years later. Some of these paintings were painted on walls in homes. In 79 a.d., a large volcano erupted. The wall paintings were buried by lava and ash. Since then, some of the paintings have been dug up. Today, tourists can see these works of art. 7

8 Chapter 2 Hundreds of Years Ago In Italy, artists still painted pictures on walls in the 1400s and 1500s. Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper on a stone wall. Over time, bits of paint flaked off. The painting has been fixed many times. Michelangelo, another artist, painted pictures on the ceiling of a church. It took him four years to finish. How did he reach the ceiling? Workers built a high platform. Michelangelo had to stand up or lie down on it to paint. Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between 1495 and This is one of Leonardo da Vinci s sketches for an invention of a flying machine. At right is a self-portrait by Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci made many sketches, or quick drawings. Some sketches were plans for his paintings. Others show us that Leonardo was an inventor, as well as an artist. Leonardo drew sketches of flying machines. He even built a flying machine. In 1496, he tested it. It did not fly. Did You Know... Some people say that the Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world. Leonardo da Vinci painted it on wood in the early 1500s. 9
