1 Attention ART III: Read this Carefully! Spirit Masks Masks have been a part of human experience since the beginning of human history. They are found in virtually all cultures and societies. As we start this unit on masks, please read the handout about the history of masks and answer the questions on a separate piece of paper, using complete sentences. Next you will research an artist pr art movement that appeals to your artistic sense and style. Write a short essay on what appeals to you in terms of how the artist uses the elements and principles of design. For example: how does the artist or group of artists use color (any color harmonies), shape, space in their work to make it appealing? What kind of compositional elements make the work unique? How would you describe the way the artist uses paint- is it rough or dots and dashes or smooth? Chose a subject matter from personal photos or observation or both. Plan how you will interpret your original subject in the style of the artist or movement you have chosen. This is a major project and deserves thoughtful planning. It is also an opportunity for you to become familiar with the incredible wealth of art tradition that we can access. Listed below are some artists and movements that are possible to guide you in your search. It represents the tip of the iceberg and you may discover someone or something that goes beyond this list. Impressionism!!! Monet!!!! Degas Renoir!!!!! Bonnard!!! Cassatt Toulous Lautrec!!! Sisley!!!! Rousseau Cubism!!!! Gaugin!!! Picasso Cezanne!!!! Paul Klee!!! Chagall Van Gogh!!!! Roy Lichtenstein Georgia OʼKeeffe!!! Jasper Johns!! Chuck Close Da Vinci!!!! Michaelangelo!! Frieda Kahlo Grant Wood!!!! Kandinsky!!! Janet Fish Winslow Homer!!! Wayne Thiebaud!! Juan Miro Diego Rivera!!!! de Kooning!!! Diebenkorn Andy Warhol!!!! Pop Art!!! Op Art Helen Frankenthaler!! Hopper!!! Rothko Matisse!!!! Seurat!!! Pointillism Jacob Lawrence!!! Frank Stella!!! Vasarley

2 Art III!! ARTIST INVENTORY Please answer the following questions about the artistʼs work you have selected. I will help you focus on how the artist used the paint, used value, arranged the composition and why that attracts you to the painting. 1. How does your artist use color? Is it vibrant, subtle, follow a specific color harmony etc.? 2. How does your artist create shadows and highlights? Can you discern colors other than black to achieve shadows? 3. How does your artist create a sense of light? Does it enhance the shapes- is it dramatic or subtle? 4. How does your artist create a sense of space? Is it through placement f shapes, or value or a combination of elements? 5. How does your artist use the paint? Are you aware of the brush strokes, or is it very smooth, or a combination of techniques?

3 MILLENNIUM MASKS Use colored pencils to work out some ideas for decorating your mask. In pencil, lightly map out the features that are unique to your mask. Try three different color harmonies. If you forget what the color harmonies are, go to your folder and take out the worksheet on color harmonies. Work quietly and independently. MILLENNIUM MASKS
