Painters of the CAVES Discoveries in the Cave of Chauvet-- Clues to the Past

On a chilly afternoon in December 1994, three good friends met to go exploring in the limestone caves near Avignon, France. Limestone is a fairly soft rock. Long ago, the Ardeche River carved deep gorges in these hills creating cliffs and caves in the rocks. In their previous adventures, these three friends had found several caves with traces of wall art done by Stone Age painters. Still, they hoped to find something more significant

The explorers followed an ancient mule path up a cliff to a narrow ledge. An opening in the cliff led to a pile of rocks where they could feel air coming out this usually was a clue that there was a cave underneath! As they removed the rocks, they discovered a small passageway, barely big enough for a person to squeeze through. These experienced explorers were equipped with flashlights, ropes and a ladder; so they ventured ahead. What they found was an astonishingly large cave full of discoveries!!

First, they came to a place where the floor of the cave was covered with bear bones and teeth where bears had hibernated for thousands of years. Next, they saw a drawing of a little red mammoth on a rock. Soon, they found paintings of bears, rhinoceroses, horses, hyenas, wooly rhinos, mammoths, bison, wild cattle, lions, deer, panthers, mountain goats and human handprints all stenciled on the walls. Horses Lions

The cave, which was named Chauvet, after one of the explorers, holds more than 300 paintings of animals that lived some 32,000 years ago, late in the Stone Age. Rhinoceroses

The artists of this paintings are known to us as Paleolithic Cave Painters. You will notice that the colors they use are red, yellow, brown and black. In order to make these paints, they combined minerals and charcoal with cave water and then used stone tools, pads of animal fur or their hands to paint the walls. There are many cave paintings found throughout Europe. The majority of these paintings are representations of animals. Why do you think that animals were important to these early humans?

Cave art also includes many images that are not animals and not even pictures. There are many, many dots. There are circles, rectangles, zigzags, grids and other signs, as well as stencils and prints of hands. No one today knows what the signs mean. No one knows what the paintings mean. But scientists and others who study the art have some ideas.

What do you notice about the cave paintings?

While we will never know what exactly these cave painters were trying to show, what we do know is that they were sharing their story! Cave paintings were not a way of decorating shelters, for people usually lived deep within caves. We also do not believe that the paintings were done for fun. The caves were dark, damp and slippery difficult places to work. Some pictures were painted in nooks and crannies that were hard to squeeze into. Ceilings and other high places required ladders or scaffolds. Art must have played an important part in their lives and had meaning for them. Some historians believe that because the art shows mostly animals, that the cave painters believed the painting was hunting magic. Others believe that the paintings represent early humans belief in powerful spirits. A third idea is that the painted caves were places where ceremonies were held. A fourth idea is that the cave paintings were aids to memory a record of their story. What do you think is the reason the cave painters painted their stories on the wall?

Paleolithic Cave Painting Art Project: Divide children into 4 or 5 groups. Give each group a large sheet of butcher paper from the LMC. Ask each group to come up with a story that they want to preserve for history but tell them to keep it a secret from the rest of the class. Using markers or crayons, ask them to represent that story through pictures (NO WORDS!!) for the rest of the class. After the students have created their works of art, let the rest of the class guess what story or important event each group was attempting to represent. Discuss how similar this process is to our modern-day cave painting interpretations. We will never know exactly what message these early humans were trying to leave for posterity, but cave paintings such as the ones found in the Cave of Chauvet give us many clues!!
