1 From early times, humans have been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world s art treasures. Fine art treasure from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries.

2 The Louvre was not a museum when it first built. It began as a fortress on the outskirt of Paris in The French King Auguste decided to build defensive walls around the city of Paris. The Louvre was the western bulwark of those walls. It was a royal castle with high walls and a round tower.

3 The inner tower had a deep moat around to keep out enemies. It was used to house the royal treasures and arms, as well as a few unlucky prisoners.

4 Over the years, the number of building around the castle grew. By 1350, the castle was no longer needed as afoot. The Louvre became a palace home for French king and queens. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

5 During times of peace, new treasures were brought in. During days of war, many treasure were stolen, and the building were damaged. When Francis I became King of France in 1515, he brought in artists from many countries. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Da Vinci s Mona Lisa is the best-known painting in the museum to day In 1793, the Louvre became public museum, just as it is now. It is a place where art treasures have been saved for everyone to enjoy.
