2 EXHIBITIONS CONTINUING Human/Nature: Photographers Constructing the Natural World Through August 31, 2015 Long-revered conventions have held that landscape and nature photography should minimize evidence of human presence. The ten artists in Human/Nature: Photographers Constructing the Natural World play with and against this tradition. In the work on display, these artists treat signs of humanity, and our activities, as essential, constitutive elements of their image-making practice rather than as undesirable or unfortunate inclusions. Drawing upon American photography from the 1960s to the present in the Norton Simon s permanent collections, this exhibition sees nature and culture not in opposition, but in dialogue. CLOSING Lock, Stock and Barrel: Norton Simon s Purchase of Duveen Brothers Gallery Through April 27, 2015 Lock, Stock and Barrel examines one of Norton Simon s most memorable acquisitions the purchase of the century-old, esteemed art dealership, the Duveen Brothers Gallery. Featuring more than 100 works from the Museum s collection, the exhibition sheds light on Simon s business strategies and his dramatic evolution as an art collector. And with its focus on the Gallery s remaining stock, the exhibition provides a window onto the tastes and trends of the early- to mid-20th-century American art market. Tête-à-Tête: Three Masterpieces from the Musée d Orsay Through June 22, 2015 The Norton Simon Museum presents an installation of three paintings from the Musée d Orsay s renowned collection of Impressionist art. Organized by Chief Curator Carol Togneri with Associate Curator Emily Beeny, the installation features Édouard Manet s Emile Zola, 1868, James Abbott McNeill Whistler s Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, 1871 (also known as Portrait of the Artist s Mother), and Paul Cézanne s Card Players, The Orsay paintings hang together in the Norton Simon Museum s 19 th -century wing, alongside paintings from the Simon collection by Manet, Cézanne and their peers. Timed tickets are available for sale. LECTURES The Musée d Orsay: Its Architecture, Pedigree and World-Class Art Alain Lombard, Deputy Director, Musée d Orsay Saturday, April 18, 4:00 5:00 p.m. Since its inauguration on December 9, 1986, the Musée d Orsay has welcomed more than 76 million visitors to its galleries. Located in the very heart of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine, with the Louvre and the Tuileries Garden directly across the river, this museum is exceptional for its stately building, originally conceived in 1900 as a railway station. It houses one of the most famous collections of French 19th-century paintings, composed of some of the most iconic works ever created by the Impressionists. It also possesses a splendid collection of the Nabi group, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts and photography made during the short period encompassing the years For the patrimony of French art, this second half of the 1800s has often been compared in importance to Italy s Renaissance. Lombard explores this eminent institution, from the fascinating history of its building to its inception as an art museum, as well as its celebrated collections. James McNeill Whistler and His Mother Daniel Sutherland, Distinguished Professor of History, University of Arkansas Saturday, May 2, 4:00 5:00 p.m. James McNeill Whistler created over 2,700 paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs, besides writing several pamphlets about the roles of art and the artist in society. He may legitimately be hailed as the most complete of all American artists. Yet, Whistler is most often remembered for a single painting, a portrait of his mother, Anna. Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, or Whistler s Mother, as it is universally known, marked a turning point in his thinking about art and helped, no less than the woman herself, to shape the course of his life. 4 Revolutions in Technique: Manet, Monet and the Impressionists David Bomford, Chair of the Department of Conservation and Head of European Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Saturday, May 9, 4:00 5:00 p.m. Although Manet was closely associated with the Impressionists, he remained quite distinct from the formal group of painters that bore the name. He exhibited in none of the eight Impressionist exhibitions and consistently declined invitations to participate. While the Impressionists and especially Monet established clearly defined ways of working, Manet s technical trajectory is more complex and difficult to define. This lecture explores Manet s working methods in paintings such as Émile Zola and compares them with the classic Impressionist techniques of Monet. By doing so, we come closer to understanding the differing aims and objectives of both artists. FILMS James McNeill Whistler and the Case for Beauty (2014) A film by Karen Thomas, NR 56 minutes Friday, April 24, 6:00 7:00 p.m. James McNeill Whistler and the Case for Beauty takes a close look at how the 19th-century artist pioneered a new way of thinking about art that beauty, in and of itself, is a work of art s most essential value. Whistler s struggle to find his own voice resulted in a breakaway style that moved painting toward abstraction and revolutionized the art world of his time paving the way for what became known decades later as Modernism. By the time of his death, Whistler had become one of the most celebrated artists in the Western tradition. The Life of Émile Zola (1937) Directed by William Dieterle, NR Friday, May 15, 5:30 7:30 p.m. 116 minutes The story of a great writer, a man who proved that a single voice can overcome injustice and change the course of history, is immortalized in The Life of Émile Zola. This 1937 drama episodically explores the career of the novelist who championed France s oppressed. Zola (Paul Muni) is a successful French author who risks all his success and comfort to come to the defense of the unjustly imprisoned Captain Alfred Dreyfus (Oscar winner Joseph Schildkraut). This film is a must-see portrait of a life that grew into an important voice for art, truth and justice. 5 Le Cousin Jules (1972) Directed by Dominique Benicheti, NR 91 minutes Friday, June 12, 6:00 7:30 p.m. The documentary Le Cousin Jules is a rare combination of sophisticated movie-making technique and an ode to the beauty of rural France, capturing the simplicity of daily peasant life, and the nearly wordless intimacy of a lifelong relationship. Over a five-year period, director Dominique Benicheti filmed the rhythms and rituals of blacksmith Jules Guiteaux and his wife Félicie, as Jules dons wooden clogs and leather apron to begin work in his shop, while Félicie tends a vegetable garden and prepares their meals. A ravishing and immersive work, the film allows viewers to enter not only into the subjects world, but also the very rhythms of their lives providing a record of a time and a way of life that have long since vanished. Awarded the jury prize at the Locarno Film Festival in 1973 and widely acclaimed around the world, the film was beautifully restored in In French with English subtitles. 6 EDUCATION PROGRAMS ADULT DRAWING CLASSES Painting Composition Study painting composition in the Museum with artist Will Weston. Painted pictures use underlying compositional devices to organize elements and make the painting easier to read. Most of these devices are invisible to viewers until they are explained, shown in paintings or practiced. This drawing series provides a framework through lectures, tours and in-class drawing using the Museum s collections. Students learn to see below the painted surface and understand composition, including its role in providing mood, atmosphere and narrative in paintings. Essential Elements of Composition Friday, May 8, 6:00 8:00 p.m. The first class speaks to essential elements of composition through a lecture and gallery tour. Proportions, focal points and directing the eye are addressed. Directing the Eye Friday, May 15, 6:00 8:00 p.m. Overlapping planes and atmospheric perspective are discussed to develop students understanding of how an eye moves through the painting with the use of compositional devices. Scientific and Sectional Perspective Friday, May 22, 6:00 8:00 p.m. Students learn about two perspective systems scientific (sometimes called Italian) perspective and sectional perspective. Both systems have strengths and weaknesses that are discussed using examples from the Norton Simon s collections. Color Theory through the Ages Friday, May 29, 6:00 8:00 p.m. Students learn basic applied color theory and its application to paintings from various time periods. Story Structures Friday, June 5, 6:00 8:00 p.m. Different types of content and narrative are addressed in picture making. Students get a brief lecture and tour of the galleries, with discussion on the use of color in narrative, story structures and additional compositional issues of interest. 7 Changes in Composition Friday, June 12, 6:00 8:00 p.m. The final session explores changes in compositional strategies throughout the 19th century, including the influence of Japanese prints, the camera and changes in social structures. Students complete the course by sketching from the Museum s collections to incorporate what they have learned. All levels of experience are welcome. Each class is $20 ($16 for members) and is limited to 20 participants. Materials are provided. Advance registration is required and can be made at nortonsimon.org/events. ART-MAKING WORKSHOP Storytelling through Flower Arranging Sunday, June 7, 11:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Join artist Lili Cuzor in a flower-arranging workshop focused on learning to let go of preconceived structures in the flower-arranging world and instead looking inward to tell a story. Students work with local flowers and foraged grasses, weeds, branches and herbs to put together one to two arrangements, using nature and the Museum s Sculpture Garden as a guide to constructing their stories. All levels of experience are welcome. The class is $30 ($24 for members) and is limited to 20 participants. Materials are provided. Advance registration is required and can be made at nortonsimon.org/events. AFTERNOON SALONS Rediscovering Zurbarán: Constructs of Faith Sunday, April 12, 1:00 2:00 p.m. Exemplifying themes from the Counter Reformation, works by Francisco de Zurbarán display an intense sense of naturalism and mysticism. A product of Spain s Golden Age, Zurbarán worked mainly for monastic orders, creating pieces that reflected the nation s and the artist s profound religiosity. Examine the passion found in Zurbaran s oeuvre through his unconventional use of light and shadow, his dramatic use of form and color and his ability to imbed deep religious meaning into everyday objects. 8 Human/Nature: Photographers Constructing the Natural World Sunday, May 17, 1:00 2:00 p.m. Discuss the confluence of the natural and the constructed in the exhibition Human/Nature: Photographers Constructing the Natural World, in which works by 20th-century photographers subvert long-revered conventions of landscape and nature photography. Participate in dialogue as a result of the engagement of the material world in non-human arenas. Upon examining works in the exhibition, consider whether the landscape has been improved, impacted or transformed by evidence of human presence. Rooted in Reality: Elements of Realism in the 17th-Century Dutch Painting Sunday, June 14, 1:00 2:00 p.m. Explore the complex relationship between the socio-cultural changes and artistic aspirations of the post-reformation Dutch Republic during the 17th century. Examine the Republic s beloved genres landscape, portraiture and still life as well as the specific formal characteristics of the era in paintings by such artists as Rembrandt, Cuyp and van Ruisdael, among others. Discuss the manner in which the works in question exhibited some of the first instances of realism in Western art.
