2 The elements of art are basic visual symbols in the language of art. These include line, value, shape, space, color, and texture.
3 The principles of design are the rules that govern how artists organize the elements of art. These include unity, harmony, emphasis, balance, variety, proportion, movement, and rhythm.
4 Composition is the way the principles of design are used to organize the elements of art. Content is the message a work of art communicates. Subject is an image that viewers can easily identify in an artwork. Medium is the material or materials used to make an artwork. 5 Picture Plane is the flat, two-dimensional surface of a painting or drawing.
6 Format refers to the surface area on which an artist creates a work of art. It is the shape of the picture plane.
7 Line is the element of art that is the path of a moving point through space.

11 Blind contour drawing means that you look at the subject while you re drawing but NEVER at the paper 100% of your time is spent looking at the drawing subject.

21 Central Axis is a dividing line that works like a point of balance in a balance scale.

53 Perspective is the graphic system that creates the illusion of depth and volume on a two-dimensional surface. Linear perspective is based on converging lines, when parallel lines seem to move closer together as they move toward the horizon line.
54 Many perspective techniques help create the illusion of depth. Size: The smaller the object, the farther away it appears. Placement: Objects low on the picture plan seem closer to the viewer than those near eye level. Detail: Objects with clear, sharp outlines seem closer while hazy outlines seem farther away. Overlapping: When one object covers part of a second object, the first seems closer to the viewer. Color: Atmospheric perspective makes brightly colored objects seem closer than dull, light colors. 61 Viewpoint, or point of view, is the angle from which you see an object.

63 Rene Magritte was a Surrealist artist from Belgium. He did not start painting until the age of 40, working as a wallpaper designer before that. He often includes himself as subject in his work. Surrealism was an art movement which followed World War I. Surrealists rebelled against conventional values and based their work on memories, feelings, or dreams. They worked with psychology and fantastic visual techniques.

69 Georgia O Keeffe was an American artist who became famous for her enlarged paintings of flowers. O Keeffe painted flowers large so as to draw her audience s attention to a familiar subject. She was married to photographer Alfred Stieglitz who first exhibited her work in his New York gallery. O Keeffe began in a realistic style but eventually worked in abstraction. After moving to New Mexico, she painted many desert landscapes, found animal bones, and Southwestern architecture.
