1 DECEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS 2017 PRESIDENT'S LETTER Our December meeting not only has a great artist demonstrating, we also have a cooking feast! Please read about Phil Starke's presentation below. We are all in for a treat. Phil is a wonderful presenter. Now is the time to renew your SRAL membership. Please do this by January 1, 2018, or you may encounter a late fee of $5.00. GVR has asked us for a list of members and their GVR numbers at the beginning of each year. Not only do they want this list, we have to provide them a count of attendees at our general meetings and a daily count of people who use our studio. Fortunately, Skip Perkins has set this counting up with a program in the studio's computer. Please remember to sign in whenever you visit the studio. Even when I just stop in to pick up papers, I always scan my GVR card. Our numbers COUNT! Remember to check out the wonderful classes Jan Holland, SRAL's Second Vice President, has scheduled for February and March. 2 "Catalina Mountains", Phil Starke Our General Meeting on December 14, at 1:00 in the Anza Room at Santa Rita Springs Social Center should not be missed! Our demo artist is Phil Starke, who will show us How to Suggest Light. He will demonstrate how to "see" in terms of simple shapes and values, which makes it easier to think about color. Phil grew up in a military family, where he spent several years in Europe and was influenced by the museums and art work he was exposed to. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied figure painting and drawing. After living and painting in the midwest for a number of years, he and his family moved to Tucson AZ. The southwest, with its vast resources of subject matter is a great inspiration for his work. Phil takes several painting trips a year throughout the southwest, as well as Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Aside from the pure joy and excitement of painting his surroundings, Phil s goal in painting is to try and reflect some of the Gods glory in his creation. Phil teaches workshops around the country and for Scottdale Artists School and the Tucson Art Academy. EXHIBIT ETIQUETTE

3 It has come to the Boards attention that people have removed their artwork from an exhibit before the end date, without notifying the show s chairperson. This has caused the chairpersons, who are volunteers, distress since they do not know who removed the painting. Please be considerate and call or a show chairperson if you sold a painting or removed it for another reason. UPCOMING GVR CLASSES Two exceptional artists will be teaching GVR classes this winter in our studio, Tonja Sell and Walter Porter. Please see the flyers included with this eblast. The show runs from January 2 to 31 at the West Social Center. The show contains reproductions of master's paintings created before It's estimated that the show will exhibit around 30 pieces.it is not too late to get your artwork into the show -- the deadline to enter is December 19, 2017 and two entries are allowed. 4 BRIGGS ABSTRACT ART COMPETITION It's the time of year to be working on those 36" X 36" canvases for the 14th Annual Eva Briggs Abstract Art Competition. This exhibit is schedule from February 2 to 28, 2018 at the Community Performance and Art Center (CPAC). Be sure to get your painting completed early since only the first 50 paintings submitted will be hung, provided each adheres to SRAL's criteria which can be found at For this exhibit, we are fortunate to have Barbara Rogers ( and Nancy Charak ( as our judges. They will be awarding the following prizes: First Place: $500 Second Place: $300 Third Place: $200 Three Honorable Mentions: $50/each People's Choice Award: $100 The Robert Dinkel Award for the Best Use of Color: $100 Click here to download the application form. CANOA HILLS PERMANENT SHOW There is still room for a few more paintings for the Canoa Hills Permanent Show in the Palo Verde Auditorium. Paintings will be up December 16th until mid-march The show is open to all members and paintings can be any size, media and style, framed or gallery wrapped. The walls easily hold 3x3 abstracts to small 8x10s. Please follow the SRART guidelines for framing, hanging, and use of glass (please no glass over 16x20). 5 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS PORTRAIT The Portrait Group is meeting at the studio on Tuesday's from 1:00-3:00PM. Models needed. Contact Sharon at DESERT DOODLERS The Desert Doodler Group provides a venue for anyone interested in challenging their creative spirit through doodling: repetitive, meditative lines and patterns. We share doodling ideas, techniques and materials information and provide encouragement and support in a relaxed, social environment. The group meets most Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 in the studio. Contact Pat Chaloux ( ) for more information. OPAL The Oil Painterd of the Art League (OPAL) meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at the SRAL studio from 10:00am-1:00pm. For more information on OPAL go to: COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA The Collage Mixed Media Group meets on the First and Third Wednesdays of every month in the Main Studio unless there is a class being presented and we then meet in Studio A. This is currently an informal group meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 for all who are interested in collage and mixed media fine art. Any member of the Santa Rita Art League is invited to come and use our spacious, well equipped studio and meet with others who have a similar interest. An informal critique is sometimes held at 11:00 a.m. One of the benefits of our special interest group is the sharing of ideas. Each individual sees art differently and can often offer a new point of view. Additionally, if a member has a problem, concern or is at a standstill with an artwork in progress other group members can offer suggestions. Susan Ettl Betsy Kimbrough PRINT GUILD

6 There will be no December meeting, but all printmakers are encouraged to continue preparation of entries for the CPAC print show that opens January 5 (the application form should be available soon). Note that the entry types this year have been expanded to include printmaking with collage and printmaking with mixed media. This expansion should stimulate our imaginations and result in some exciting entries: JANUARY 5-31, 2018 Printmaking Extravaganza = Print + Print & Collage + Print & Mixed Media Reception January 5, 5-7pm If anyone would like individual instruction in using the Studio printing equipment, please contact Karen Keim ASAP so we can arrange some help early in December. WATERCOLOR The Santa Rita Art league Watercolor Group meets on Friday mornings from 9 a.m.- 12 noon.. BRIGGADE The BRIGGade Meeting is December 15 at 9:30 in the studio. We had a great crowd at last meeting and they named the December challenge celestial. See you there abstract fans. The outings planned for December are: PLEIN AIR Dec 7. Rio Rico Golf Course. Meet at the Springs upper lot at 8:30. We will carpool south from there. We painted there during the summer and fall, what a place. Mountains, water and trees, landscapes and buildings take your pick. They also serve a great brunch and are so accommodating. Dec 14. General Meeting Day so we will stay close. We will paint at Asarco Mine off the Pima Mine Road. Lots to paint there, large mining equipment, great landscapes with mountain views. Meet at East Center at 8:45, south lot, for carpools. Dec 21. Lowe House Surround in Tubac. Meet at the Springs upper lot at 8:45am. We have painted here before and it has a lot to offer. Dec 28. De Grazia Compound. Meet at East Center south lot at 8:30am. We have a bit of a drive so carpools will form at the lot. The chapel burned down and I don t know what we will find there, but we still have the gallery, and buildings.

7 CURRENT EXHIBITS AND SHOWS DESERT DOODLERS ART SHOW Reception Thursday, December 7, 4:30 to 6:00 pm East Center Recreation Center Main Lobby If you ve been curious about the Desert Doodlers group, this is your chance to peruse their unique art! Works will be on display from December 1-31 Plan to stop by! EXCELLENCE IN ART The Sky Island Painters are exhibiting their finest oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel paintings at the Canoa Ranch Social Center, 5750 S. Turquoise Canyon Drive, every day in December. The group includes, Randy Cole, Linda Long, Jean Makela, Bonnie Roberts, Nanci Sheppard, Linda Sparks, and Nancy Wesorick. Don't forget to bring your GVR card to open the door to the gallery. FESTIVAL OF COLOR The Southwest TEN artists are holding their December, Fine Arts Show at the Canoa Hills Social Center, 3660 S. Camino Del Sol. The exhibit includes more than 40 acrylic, oil, watercolor, and pastel paintings. The artists are: Annella Campbell, Susan Ettl, Bonnie Gore, Jan Holland, Betsy Kimbrough, Altie Metcalf, Karen Metcalf, Rich Metcalf, Serene Rein, and Sheridan Shimp. Everyone is invited. 7am to 7pm.

8 What we do! JOYCE S CORNER The mission of the Santa Rita Art League is to promote... awareness, appreciation, and development of talent for all two-dimensional fine art forms. Promoting... our General Meeting In our own unique and lively way we gather the 2 nd Thursday of each month with needed announcements, intros of new members and visitors, a demonstration or program presented by talented artists of various media sharing their special techniques and innovative skills and creations, wonderful refreshments donated by you (our members), and when needed business that must be voted on by the membership. Even when the program is not about your particular interest, there are basic elements that can help you. Come join this chance to make friends and meet new and established members. Don t assume that just because you may be new, all those other members are old timers (pardon the expression). We all come from someplace else at different times with all sorts of backgrounds and all wanting to make new friends and learn more about art. Promoting... A wonderful plus is the exhibit tables for ALL of you to show what you have been doing. If there isn t a table for something you do ask Terry Sapak where to show it.
