Haliburton School of The Arts Canada Summit Centre - Huntsville Offerings July 11 to 15, 2011 Acrylics & Mixed Media Introductory COURSE CODE ARTS1175 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Annette Blady Van Mil Learn methods and techniques using acrylics paints and acrylic products that will start you on an exciting journey of discovery. You will be encouraged to work in a variety of formats, using traditional painting materials and fluid acrylics, as well as heavy body paints with collage. While technique will remain an important aspect, emphasis will be placed on experimentation, building a personal style and colour sense, choosing subject matter, and open in-class discussions about the work produced. Acrylics & Mixed Media Intermediate COURSE CODE ARTS712 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Annette Blady Van Mil Please note: This course is not suitable for beginners and is designed for those who have some previous experience with acrylic painting. In this course you will be encouraged to work in larger formats, using traditional painting materials and fluid acrylics, as well as heavy body paints with collage. While technique will remain an important aspect, emphasis will be placed on experimentation, building a personal style and colour sense, choosing subject matter, and open in-class discussions about the work produced.

Kids Eco Art** COURSE CODE ARTS1621 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Holly Groome FEE $ Please note: This course is suitable for kids from 6-10 years old Inspired by wild and wonderful project ideas you will have the opportunity to make your own Eco Art. Learn to tell time using the sun, play eco games in a natural setting, and create your own kaleidoscope. Make your own plant-able seed paper and leaf print artwork, create musical instruments from flower pots, and gargoyles from coffee trays. All the ideas are designed to inspire you to reduce, reuse, recycle and protect our planet Earth! There will be a material fee of approximately $20 payable to the instructor. Photography Travel & Landscape COURSE CODE ARTS701 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Rob Stimpson Please note: This course is not suitable for beginners. To participate in this course, knowledge of where the camera controls are located (i.e. menu, white balance, f-stops, ISO, etc) and how the camera works (i.e. f-stops and shutter speeds) is essential. Instruction can benefit traditional and point and shoot cameras but is best suited to DSLR cameras. Our travels and journeys take us to places we never may visit again. On these trips we all want to document where we have been and, for the most part, capture a sense of place. The camera becomes our voice through our visual interpretation of the landscape. In this course you will learn how to create an effective photo essay that becomes your own personal interpretation of the places you visit. Good photographs are made, not just taken. You will learn how to create an image, not just take a picture. Through the use of simple techniques, discover how to take an effective portrait of people in the outdoors, how to enhance your landscape images, add emotion to your pictures and how to get the most out of the tools you have. You will spend time wandering through the village and surrounding areas looking for places of interest where you create your visual interpretation of the landscape. Through assignments, critiques of your work and slideshows, you will learn what it takes to be a more effective photographer. This course will help you to move out of your comfort zone as well as introduce you to new challenges with travel and landscape photography. Assignments are designed based on you knowing the fundamentals. Both digital and film cameras are welcome in this course.

Printmaking Sampler COURSE CODE ARTS1619 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Linda Kristen Blix Discover printmaking techniques that focus on creating excitement and fun. Screen monoprinting, a unique and popular process that satisfies those who love to boldly paint and offers the surprise element of printmaking, will be the cornerstone of instruction. Many other easy, yet spectacular printmaking techniques will also be explored. These will include relief printing using butter-soft material, four colour prints on Styrofoam, creating textures using gadgets, monotypes without a press, and collagraphs using simple found materials. The course will conclude with the opportunity to combine techniques or use your favourite for your own creative expression. All materials will be provided, but you may bring materials you wish to collage or incorporate as you discover the joy of printmaking! There will be an $80 material fee payable to the instructor. Sculpting, Modelling & Mould Making Techniques COURSE CODE ARTS1622 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Brenda Wainman Goulet FEE $ (includes $9.26 material fee) Instruction will provide a comprehensive introduction to sculpting and modelling techniques. You will create sculptures in clay and learn some simple mould making techniques that will enable you to reproduce duplicates of your originals. The duplicates will then be finished with various faux-bronze and stone-like techniques suitable for indoor or outdoor placement. Please note that clay pieces will not be fired in this course. There will be a $50 material fee payable to the instructor.

Storytelling - Playing with Myth & Metaphor COURSE CODE ARTS1623 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Fay Wilkinson Storytelling is an ancient art that empowers both the individual and the group. Explore myths, fairy tales and Native American stories, and use mythology for personal growth and sharing. Instruction and exercises will encourage the development of sensitivity and facility in the use of memory, tempo, pitch and volume in storytelling. The psychological and theoretical aspects of storytelling will also be investigated. In addition to storytelling you will use various art media to expand your experience. Explorations of mask making, drawing and painting, collage, stitching, drama, writing and drumming will enhance storytelling techniques. You will be asked to learn one short fairy tale or myth before coming to the course. Individual expression will be encouraged as you begin to develop a personal repertoire of meaningful storytelling symbols. No previous storytelling or art experience is necessary to full enjoy and benefit from this course. All levels of skill and experience will be accommodated. There will be a $20 material fee payable to the instructor. July 18 to 22, 2011 Bookbinding Sampler COURSE CODE ARTS1626 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Hannah Lin Discover the beauty and function of handmade books. This course will give you a repertoire of great book forms and inspire you to investigate techniques and develop your own creations. Instruction will cover six different book styles - building simple folded and stitched forms; oriental bindings; a classic hardcover journal, and the beautiful, exposed spine book. You will also explore the process of decorating surfaces as you play with Japanese suminagashi and western paper marbling. Discussions about contemporary materials, alternative tools and finding creative solutions together will inspire and fuel the creative fire of artists and beginners alike. There will be a $40 material fee payable to the instructor.

Kids Creative Express** COURSE CODE ARTS1625 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Elise Muller FEE $ Please note: This course is suitable for kids from 6-10 years old Come aboard The Creative Express and explore a variety of exciting art projects! Try your hand at stone carving, make your own papier maché piñata, create a puppet, masks and a cape, invent musical instruments, learn printmaking, work with clay, and more. Dress for mess and get ready to have fun! There will be a $25 material fee payable to the instructor. Landscape - Creative Approaches COURSE CODE ARTS1627 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Ramune Luminaire Experience this innovative approach to the classic subject of landscape. Instruction will emphasize various and creative ways of collecting and recording information, as well as developing and expanding ideas. Using innovative techniques for gathering and recording material outside, combined with time to explore and experiment in the studio, plus a hint of inner landscape, you will be guided toward a very personal response to the landscape. Days will combine time spent outside on location with time in the studio. You are welcome to work in any medium: watercolour, acrylic, pastel and/or mixed media. Bring your own materials and you will be encouraged to experiment and explore with materials provided by the instructor. This course is suitable for experienced, inexperienced and would-be artists alike. There will be a $10 material fee payable to the instructor.

Life Drawing & Painting COURSE CODE ARTS125 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Steve Rose Learn how to have your figurative work flow from your hand. This extensive course, working with the life model, will address your personal artistic development. Instruction in drawing the figure, drawing techniques and applying colour theory will be a strong foundation for continuing artistic practice in drawing and painting. You will explore new materials, strive for mastery of media with which you are familiar, and originate a life drawing project that addresses your own personal technical or conceptual problems. Drawings and paintings by a variety of artists will be available for viewing and reference. Upon completion you will have the ability to use life drawing as the basis for a process of ongoing investigation that will continue to build skill, perception and ease, as well as provide a foundation for expression in drawing and painting. Quilting Spontaneous Geometrics COURSE CODE ARTS187 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR John Willard Please note: Sewing skills are essential to participate in this course. This course is about artistic freedom. It is designed to help an experienced traditionalist or a progressive quiltmaker venture forth into the untried. It will teach you how to design and construct a quilt without using tedious and time-consuming methods involving patterns, templates and precise measurements...you will finally be free from 'corners that meet precisely'! Construction techniques will involve simple methods of strip piecing and `cut and paste'. You will concentrate on overcoming a fear of colour by juxtaposing the most incongruous fabrics to achieve dazzling and unexpected effects. You will also push the format of the quilt into unexpected shapes, extending far beyond the usual square or rectangle. If you have taken this course previously, you will have an opportunity to further challenge yourself.

Sheep to Shawl COURSE CODE ARTS1620 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Holly Groome Whether you're a beginner to the craft or would like to re-discover the excitement of creating your own yarn, this course encourages exploration and discovery. Learn to card, spin the fleece on a traditional drop spindle, dye your material with both natural and synthetic dyes and turn your newly created yarn into an amazing work of art. Knitting, crocheting and felting techniques will all be introduced as you complete your project. There will be a $60 material fee payable to the instructor. July 25 to 29, 2011 Bead Weaving Basics COURSE CODE ARTS1624 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Vicki Sharp DATES July 25-29, 2011 This course will explore the main stitches that make up the foundation of contemporary bead weaving techniques. These stitches are used to create a broad range of work from jewellery to three-dimensional objects. The application of these beading stitches will concentrate primarily on their use in jewellery design. Instruction will include discussions on the mechanics of designing jewellery to fit the body and on working with colour, texture and form. Each day will feature a new stitch and some of its variations. The aim is to equip you with the building blocks of bead weaving so that you can continue independently, as well as go on to creating your own designs. Because bead weaving projects can take a lot of time, you may not finish all projects in class. Bead weaving is a very creative, meditative and portable medium. You're limited only by your imagination! There will be $45 material fee, for standard beading equipment, payable to the instructor. Beads will be in addition to this fee, with the total cost depending upon beads and projects chosen.

Mosaics COURSE CODE ARTS136 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Annette Blady Van Mil DATES July 25-29, 2011 By definition, a mosaic is a surface decoration made by inlaying small pieces of coloured glass, stone or tile to produce a pattern or image. In this course you will discover the unusual, creative, innovative and fun world of mosaics. Gain an appreciation of the history and techniques of mosaics and, by blending traditional and modern techniques, you will create some amazing works of art! Basic techniques will be taught through hands-on demonstrations. Turn your broken tiles, chipped china, cracked pots, smashed glass, old buttons and mirrors into masterpieces. By learning the mosaic technique, you will make the ordinary extraordinary! All skill levels will benefit from this course. There will be a $20 material fee payable to the instructor. Open Studio - Painting COURSE CODE ARTS1258 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Steve Rose DATES July 25-29, 2011 Please note: This course is not suitable for beginners. This course is an excellent opportunity to challenge, explore, and expand upon your personal art practice. The learning environment is an independent open studio format that is suitable for any subject matter and style of approach. Expand your visual language, painting skills, and artistic literacy in a safe and highly creative environment. Instruction will encourage creative imagery, content, and contemporary execution of your ideas. In addition there will be ongoing personal and group critiques as well as daily informal lectures on artists, art movements, and related art history. Pen & Ink and Colour COURSE CODE ARTS165 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Marta Scythes DATES July 25-29, 2011 The intricate art of pen and ink will be explored through a series of fun exercises designed to improve observational skills, composition, value range and colour application. Several ink techniques will be demonstrated, including painted washes. The colour element will be introduced mid-course which will involve the use of watercolour combined with the black and white composition. Personal choice of subject matter will be encouraged. Composition and colour theory will be addressed throughout the course.

Watercolour Painting Intermediate Plein Air COURSE CODE ARTS1250 SECTION 48 INSTRUCTOR Gary Chapman DATES July 25-29, 2011 Please note: This course is not suitable for beginner painters. Instruction will extend your confidence in painting with watercolour and enable you to meet the challenges of painting en Plein Air. Recognition and interpretation of the subjects necessary for a well constructed landscape painting will be emphasized. Learn to organize your equipment on location and how to achieve your personal artistic goal. Initial instruction will be in-studio addressing the wet-in-wet technique, followed by onlocation painting at various sites, weather permitting.
