1 1 The Rio Grande Art Association Palette Volume 15 Issue 14 November 2014 RGAA NEXT MEETING Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 10 am to the African American Performing Arts Center, 310 San Pedro SE, at EXPO NM See Map inside Our Guest Presenter will be: Mark Horst (details inside) Beautiful Taiwan Trip Opportunity (details inside) President s Letter - November, 2014 Amazing, wonderful, impressive, are a few of the qualifying words to describe this years 12th annual Signature Show, - iencantada! Painting Exhibition. Recognizing, with lots of gratitude, our Co-Chairs, Cecelia McRoberts and Marybeth Isaminger and the many volunteers for their incredible amount of time and work they invested to make this show a gargantuan success. Reception night was well attended with accolades from many of the patrons. Congratulations to every artist whose paintings were accepted into this show. Awards went to a total of 22 artists. Eighteen received Awards of Excellence and four place awards. Please see page 2 of The Palette for a complete list of winners. Many thanks to this years Jurors: Iva Morris, Nancy Reyner and Orlando Leyba and Judge:Frank McCulloch. During the judging process, Frank McCulloch began his assignment of selecting the winners by repeatedly canvassing the paintings from room to room comparing and examining. When a particular painting met his consideration it was pulled by the mules and set aside. He made comments such as: very well done; a bit mushy in the foreground; nice colors; different frame would be better on this painting; needs more lost and found edges; very appealing. From the first round of possible winners, Frank narrowed it down to the award winners and ranked them in order from 1 to 22 based on the number of awards available. He expressed how difficult it is to be judge and commented that everyone deserved an award. He was impressed with the quality of work. In conclusion I was in agreement; being a judge is a very difficult task! Please note that our November 15th meeting will be at the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo NM at 10:00am. This will give members a chance to visit the show. At this meeting, next years Board of Directors and Chairs will be approved. The slate of officers are as follows: President - Bonnie Buckley; Vice President - Barbara Nahler; Secretary - Sheila Richmond; Treasurer - Wanda Portee. Committee Chairs: Membership - Allen Lowery; Programs - Mary Julyan; Newsletter (Palette) - Nora Sanders Curran; Historian - Charlie Aldrich; Refreshments - Carolyn Poole; MasterWorks - Michael Meyer (File-Master) and Bonnie Buckley (Workshop); Website - Virginia (Ginny) Stallone and iencantada! Nancy Davis. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President this year. Many achievements have been accomplished this year; to name a few: we have continued with our Monthly Challenges; we had excellent presenters at our meetings, a great workshop with Cynthia Rowland during MasterWorks; sponsored awards for two young artists in the Metro Youth Art Exhibit; created our new Website (RGAANM.org); sponsored two cash awards of $50 each given to two student artists representing the National Scholastic Arts Awards; confirmed dates for our non-juried membership show for 2015; created a partnership with Art in The School in conjunction with our Signature Exhibition Encantada ; amended our Bylaws; improved and updated our bookkeeping system so we are in good standing and RGAA became a member of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC). WOW very impressive! All because of our members diligence and awesome support. I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Bonnie Buckley RGAA President

2 2 Bio of Mark Horst Horst BioMark Horst grew up in Minnesota. He studied pottery and printmaking in high school and college, but his encounter with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker led to years of very different work. After earning a Ph.D. in theology from Yale University, he spent time teaching and working toward neighborhood renewal in south Minneapolis. He pursued the craft of painting and drawing at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the New York Studio School. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. If paint were a means of freezing time and protecting us from the dangerous life of the spirit, I would put down my brushes. But, for me, painting is a way of breaking time s grip and setting loose something wild and strong. Horst Artist Statement I paint as a way to see and to know the world. Yet the world is never finished and the joy of seeing it is never complete and so my painting points to the fleeting, the glimpsed, to the life that is always present and so difficult to touch. I paint the way I see which is always incomplete and in process. The more I look, the more there is to observe. The world opens up and flowers; the mud takes form. I paint the figure as an invitation to explore the world and ourselves our light, our shadows, our incompleteness. I m trying to create a space for us to inhabit and give us time with questions that are not meant to be answered. Left: Mark Horst with one of his paintings. 3 3 cont d! Encantada! 2014 The paintings have been selected, the judging is done, and the Opening Reception is over-but we still have another reception coming up! Be sure to mark your calendar for Wednesday October 12th 5:30 to 7:00 pm when we will have our Art in the School reception, which will focus on our partnership with Art in the School. Art in the School is a nonprofit art education organization for children, whose mission is to open the doors to learning through the visual arts. We are giving them ten percent of our sales from our two receptions, and through our partnership with them we are truly Local artists helping local artist-to-be. If you are in the show, this will be another wonderful opportunity to invite your friends and admirers to come see your artwork; and if you are not in the show, it is still a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the success of our fellow artists! The show will continue to be open through Sunday, November 23rd: Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesdays to Fridays 10 am to 5 pm (closed Mondays). We will also have our November meeting at the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo NM, on Saturday November 15th at 10:00 am featuring Mark Horst as our presenter. Frank McCulloch, this year s judge, has generously donated a beautiful painting to be given to the winner of a raffle to benefit Art in the School. You may purchase the tickets from the gallery sitters during open hours for the show, and they will also be available at the Art in the Schools reception. So come to the show, have a look at this beautiful show and buy a raffle ticket. Raffle tickets cost only $10.00 per ticket and for $35.00 you can buy 3 tickets. If you are one of the artists whose work is in the show, please remember that the pick-up time for unsold work is Tuesday, November 25th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. And finally, but by no means least, thanks so very, very, very much to the wonderful volunteers who have done so much to help put this show together. Special thanks to our File Master Karen Canon, to our program designers, Cecelia and James McRoberts, our jurors Nancy Rayner, Iva Morris and Orlando Leyba and Judge Frank McCulloch. At every phase there has been wonderful help: some of you have offered kind words of encouragement, others have given important advice or instructions, others have given hours of their time in helping to select the judge and jurors, to put together the publicity, to sign in the artwork, to hang the artwork, to put together the beautiful table of food, and on and on. Thank you all so very much. Cecelia McRoberts & Marybeth Isaminger Encantada Co-chairs for Encantada 2014 Below some photographs from the Opening of Encantada Photos courtesy of Ann Peterson

5 Mary Sue Walsh Presentation by Diane Buster 5 Minneapolis born artist Mary Sue Walsh talked about her acrylic paintings for the October RGAA meeting. Mary Sue has lived in Santa Fe, Hawaii, Los Angeles, and now resides in Corrales. She loves landscapes and is obsessed by the beauty of the southwest. She earned her undergraduate degree at UNM in the 1970 s when the school was focused on art happenings and abstract work. She found mentors none the less like Bob Ellis, Leonard Laird, and Garo Antreasian. She went to graduate school for a year but decided to stop and pursue her own painting style. Mary Sue s focus is figurative and landscape work. She works in acrylic as she is allergic to oil solvents and in pastels, colored pencil, and lithography. Her goal is to capture her emotional reaction to a scene. She often takes forty or more photographs and makes several sketches to design a work. She will size images on the computer and often collage portions from different photographs to reach a final composition. She used ten photographs for the horse crossing painting that will be in Encantada. Though not a plein air painter, Mary has notebooks of color studies in pastel. She uses Golden acrylics without extenders or gels. She mixes large quantities of colors using food containers and baby food jars to store the paints. Mary Sue works large and has learned to work very quickly for large wash areas laying in a sky in about a half an hour. Sometimes she will come back and scumble atmospheric touches to the dry surface. Mary Sue brought in a progression display for a sunset painting to explain her steps. She does a pencil drawing first on gessoed canvas sometimes using a grid system for accuracy. She mixes a light, medium, and dark for each large color area. For figures she mixes three flesh tones to start, and then as the work progresses she mixes these together to create six tones and so on. She lays in big solid flat bands of color, warms after the cools. She addresses lighter passages and then she uses scumbling techniques to adjust values. Only in final passages does she use pure touches of color and add her darkest darks and highlights. Mary Sue likes that with acrylic you can paint both light over dark and dark over light. Mary Sue admits that acrylics may require a little more planning like watercolor for this realistic approach. She then explained that she always has a pastel going too and enjoys that medium for its more spontaneous mark making. Mary Sue stretches her own linen canvases on stretcher bars from Artisans. She uses large house painting size brushes for big washes. She cuts fan brushes into irregular shapes to create grasses using tiny brushes in the background and longer brushes as she moves forward. She does have some very good select brushes for portrait work, but most of her brushes are not very expensive. Mary finishes the paintings with Liquitex spray semi-gloss varnish. Mary Sue uses Miqui Mendez in Edgewood to produce giclees of her paintings. Miqui is also an artist and has an excellent eye for color. Mary Sue s frames are from The Art of Framing shop in Mossman Plaza. Mary Sue shows at The Watermelon Gallery in Cedar Crest and at the April Price Gallery in the Hyatt downtown Albuquerque. She is also represented online by SCW Art Consulting. For more information check out her website at Below some of Mary Sue s process examples: Above: Mary Sue s start process and then gradual progression to finished product.
