Volume 14 Issue 2 February 2013 Next meeting: Saturday February 16, 10am Presbyterian Church - Academy & Moon, Albuquerque President s Letter February 2013 I think we got off to a great start with our potluck/show and tell January meeting! I hope you all have responded by now to the on-line membership survey. Thanks to Rex Barron and Bonnie Buckley for coordinating that. If you do not receive , you should have received a mailed survey as well as this month s Palette. Give Magda Burger your contact information if you need the Palette mailed. A huge thank you to our file master John Meister for taking all our entries for Masterworks. He took in 140 entries totaling 342 paintings! That s an incredible amount of work. The good news is that RGAA took in $5,085 in entry fees. The bad news is how difficult it is for a painting to be one of the 47 accepted. Good luck to us all. Looking forward, a non-juried show opportunity is coming up. The Johnsons of Madrid Gallery will be available for a show of up to three paintings per artist in May or June. This will be discussed at the February meeting. RGAA depends on volunteers to operate. Thank you to Amy Peterson for stepping up to be our historian. We are in need of some more people. Reebie Nolda needs a partner in coordinating this year s Encantada. Depy Adams and Tom Blazier handled last year s show and will offer all kinds of assistance. This is a very important job and too big for one person. Our Palette publisher, Nora Curran, needs a back-up volunteer incase she is out of town. I also need a back-up person. I do the photos and write-ups of our demonstrations for the Palette. When I can t make a meeting, there is no article. I won t make this month s meeting any takers please?! One last thing, contact Reebie if you would like a free link to your website on the RGAA website! Happy painting, Diane

For the first meeting of 2013, members brought goodies to eat and paintings to share. Thirty paintings were lined up on the front wall and after a brief business meeting and refreshments; artists described their work while Rex and Bonnie held them up. The large and small paintings included a wide variety of subjects and ranged from nonobjective abstracts to photorealism. The first painting showed a church silhouette at sunset and was quite spiritual. To perhaps emphasize the range of subject matter, the next landscape had the humorous title of Hidden Butt Butte playfully centering a pinkish rock formation resembling that part of the human anatomy. The next painting used a diamond shaped canvas prepped with matt medium and gesso and was painted straight from imagination. Several artists brought in studies. Jeff s four small paintings focused on nature s patterns and abstract detail looking at one formation from four different perspectives. Nina Baldwin is working on a series of paintings and her flowing colors represented generations of women gathering. Dahl s succulent cactus painting is a work in progress needing he thought more light in the shadows. In contrast again, Barb intuitively balances principles of design space, line, value, color, and texture in her abstract painting. This was followed by another colorful abstract that might be flowers, might be wheels or gears, and definitely showed it was painted for the pure fun of it.

The variety of treatments continued as Tom s landscape of the Sandias viewed from I-40 emphasizing the Rio use Grande of atmospheric Art Assoiation perspective was followed by The Rex s PALLETTE experimental realistic narrative painting of Page a photograph, an electrical outlet and a piece of cloth?!. The job of plein air painting is to capture a scene in a short time. This job was made easier in the painting of a Sandia Diane Crest Trail Buster by premixing some of the palette colors. The next figure painting of a mother President and child used a Diane_buster_1@msn.com monochromatic scheme and Lou Maestas rub out technique. Following that, a portrait of an open rose balanced by a small rose bud, represented one of thirty-two flower portraits over the last 15 Vice-Presdent months. A classical Bonnie rendering Buckley of a man in profile that emphasized late afternoon light followed. The artist Rio Grande saw this gentleman bbluckley@cblegacynm.com in a store and had the courage to ask to take his picture. Co-Secretary The landscape painting Magda Burger started as a nonobjective painting, but as Al painted out what he didn t like, it seemed to turn into magda43@q.com land and sky. A calm little puppy looks out of the picture plane, completely at peace, in a painting of a puppy that d been left out in the East Mountains. The next painting, a Art snow scene in Co-Secretary encaustic, was painted Open heating the tools as the work progressed. A river runs through Silver Mine, Missouri, where this artist caught a 47 # catfish. The painting shows attention to detail and color of someone Treasurer who s spent a lot V of Ann time Peterson there. Using one support for three studies is a smart Association way to maximize time and minimize equipment vapartist@hotmail.com while plein air painting. Amy did this for her three studies of adobe doorways. A nice sense of light fills the Salt River landscape done from a photo. The next portrait features a white bearded Programs Indian sheik in a Rex yellow Barron turban that is looking directly at the viewer. Though unfinished, the intensity of his gaze is very rexbarron@q.com strong. 4 Just a hint of the blue sky cuts under the pilings and reflects on the water of a seascape done from a photograph. Lots of changes were needed to capture accurately the rocks, water, shadows and reflections in Depy s landscape from Zion National Park. Cecelia s painting used warm saturated reds and oranges on a blue ground to emphasize the warmth of the bouquet sent during her friend s hospice stay. Hank is experimenting with a home made medium using walnut oil and marble dust. His painting depicts a very ethereal cityscape. If you re interested in learning about the medium, visit and scroll down to putty medium. The next painting represents a fascination with corroding billboards that hold so much unexpected stuff and also represents how perception is a combination of what we see and what s in our minds. Icarus is falling and his fear is clear in the next figure painting on a white ground. The members agreed a vertical format emphasized the image best. Mary Julian s atmospheric painting from the small gems show featured two ducks in water but emphasized the beauty of the abstract reflections. The next scene is all about the contrast of the shapes of a large dark barn and an evergreen against the high key ground of the sky and snow. The final painting plays with a yellow and blue palette to create the atmosphere for this sailboat painting. After hearing about these works, there was still time to visit and to examine the paintings more carefully. What a great show!

NEWSLETTER EDITOR S NOTE: The description of the paintings shown is by our President Diane. However lack of space and app restrictions have prevented me from showing all the paintings shown at our January meeting. I had to compress some of them or else the newsletter would run to over 50 pages. Hopefully this has not distorted the painting. I hope that these will appear again on our website. Thanks for your understanding. Nora *** We still need an additional volunteer to co-coordinate the 2013 Encantada exhibition! Please consider joining Reebie (Rebecca) Nolda in making this year s show a success. You can sign up at the next RGAA meeting or contact Diane Buster at diane_buster_1@msn.com *** Russ Ball will be our Demonstrator for the February Meeting. Known for his exquisite drawings and paintings of birds and Dalmations in oil and pastel, he also paints large and surreal acrylic and oil paintings of harlequins on tightropes and dreamlike horsewomen riding the range. He likes to think and work in metaphor, and often layers meanings as he layers his paint. Russ shows at the Weems gallery in Albuquerque and is well-known for his illustrations for the Albuquerque Journal.

RGAA Board Meeting Minutes January 19, 2013 submitted by Magda Burger Present: Diane Buster, Bonnie Buckley, Ann Peterson, Magda Burger, Toni Black, Rex Barron, Wanda Portee, Rebecca Nolda, Depy Adams, Marybeth Isaminger, Cecelia McRoberts, Tom Blazier, Amy Peterson and Nora Sanders Beginning 2013, Board meetings will be held at 9:00 am prior to the general meetings and a sign-in attendance will used to assist the secretary s record keeping. The first agenda for March will be a director s meeting to sign the PRC tax form. Treasurer s Report: A final printed report for 2012 was submitted. RGAA balance as of 1/31/13 was $1, Total expenses for 2012 were $24, Total deposits for 2012 were $21, Encantada finances included entry fees of $ , expenses of $ and a profit of $ Discussions regarding expenditures and income for 2012 resulted in a more detailed reporting format to be provided at monthly board meetings. Action Item: The annual meeting of the Board will be in January. Encantada: Depy Adams reported that a total of 285 entries were submitted and 100 paintings made it into the show. She stated that it was more difficult to qualify for Encantada than the National Pastel Show. There were over 60 different organizations that were contacted for donations and over $ acquired for Encantada. Also, Depy put the question of What kind of art do we want for Encantada? The Board will address this issue next month. Tom Blazier discussed the quality of the show, the amount of awards and how to attract more buyers and collectors to Encantada in the future. Suggestions were made regarding a preview or private showing prior to the opening date for Encantada. More discussions will follow. Cecelia McRoberts and Diane Buster will meet in February to sign the contract for the African American Exhibition space for New Business: Diane began discussions regarding the Member Questionnaire. Bonnie Buckley will tally results of the questionnaire. Several suggestions were made for different survey programs such as Survey Monkey or just putting the survey on our website. Ann suggested doing a membership demographic fashioned after the Watercolour Society and asked how will RGAA be differentiated from other art groups? Magda Burger volunteered to handle the hardcopy mailing of the Palette to approximately 14 members who do not have . Discussions began on the growing need for a storage facility for RGAA s signage, bookkeeping files and historian records. Ann P. volunteered to come up with options. Rebecca Nolda will research data storage possibilities. She also brought up the need to update the RGAA website that she has been working on. She suggested a monthly update with current events such as upcoming demos and meetings. Reebie will provide free links to websites for member artists on the RGAA website. Another issue is how our website can best serve the artists needs. Membership can contact her with suggestions. Toni Black brought up issues about the RGAA directory. Further discussion on this issue was tabled until next month s meeting. Action Item: The survey/questionaire will be mailed to the membership by mid- February in order to receive the results before the March meeting.
