6 Optional Essays: Rhetoric After making sure your student is well prepared, dictate one or more of the following essays to him as a writing assignment or timed test (30 minutes): 1. The painters of the Renaissance took giant leaps forward in a very short amount of time during the Southern Renaissance. In a detailed, descriptive essay, explain the advances in naturalism, perspective, and composition that occurred during this amazing artistic period. Answers: This question presents three main categories for the body of your student s essay. The thesis is also readygiven. Your student may decide to simply copy the first sentence as his thesis, and use the second sentence to present his three main categories. This would be a smart, time saving method of answering the question. The student should spend the bulk of his time describing in factual detail how the artists of the Renaissance developed these areas of painting. 2. The works of art that the Renaissance produced were stunning, but the Renaissance movement carried with it dangerous temptations. In a well-constructed essay, share your perception of the dangers inherent in the Southern Renaissance. Support your assertions with specific facts. Answers: The student will probably use the first sentence as his thesis. His categories will differ. He might choose to say that humanism, pride, and greed were the temptations of the Renaissance. These would be good categories. He might as easily substitute worldliness, sensuality, and the pursuit of fame for temptations. Whatever his categories, the A paper will support those categories with facts. In his discussion of humanism, he should note that though most Renaissance artists were faithful Roman Catholic Christians, many works they produced focused the glory on man (his body or his deeds) and not on God. The top student will mention that Renaissance humanism was not the atheistic secular humanism of today, but it still tempted men to glory in their talents instead of being thankful to their loving Creator for them. Pride (the boastful pride of life, and the pride of patrons in competing to outdo other each other in possessions or courtly life), greed (the display of opulent wealth, or the desire of artists for fame or fortune), and sensuality also accompanied the heady spirit of accomplishment and wonder that was the Renaissance.
