Killed between 25%-50% of Europe s population Migration of workers from rural areas into cities to find better paying jobs Slavery skyrockets to makeup lost workforce - Europeans viewed slavery as a merciful act, since they sparred their life in war. Shift to despotism - Thirst for stability, leadership, and patriotism Renewed spirit for life
11 = Established Powerful Italian City-States Renaissance Italy was mostly urban [cities]. City-states were wealthy from trade and became the center of political, economical, and social life. Examples: Venice,
12 Why did the Renaissance take root in Italy? 1.) Cultural Advantage Italy s geography made it a natural gateway between East and West. 2.) Urban Society Italian city-states mastered commerce, business skills, etc. which resulted in an increase in wealth 3.) Money - Greatest writers, educators, and artists flocked to Italy due to the extreme wealth of the population.

14 RESULTS IN CHANGES OF TOWN LIFE MIDDLE AGES Towns were small society based on agriculture and people lived on farms Nobles had most of the power -Lords owned land -Towns protected by knights controlled by lords RENAISSANCE Towns were growing people looking for jobs, trade increasing between East & West Middle class had most of the power -Gained control of money by organizing banks - Decreasing power from lords Status was determined by birthright Status was determined by wealth and ability
