1 UArts PIE program Mural Arts Fall 2011 Shira Walinsky Instructor Course Objectives: -Learn about the murals of Philadelphia through tours and guest lecturers. -Learn about the creation of murals from beginning to end (wall hunting, community process, designing, production and installation). -Explore the connections of murals to narrative throughout history and through examples of murals in Philadelphia. -Learn about the benefits to students and a community in engaging in a community process - Engage in community process for an individual and a group project --Collaborate on a group mural design -Learn about design process on and off the computer -Enlarge a panel of a mural and paint it -- Visit mural sites in process -Create a curriculum that involves murals WEEK 1 11/5/11 Topic We will delve into the world of murals through multiple tours throughout the day. Learn about the narratives of and processes behind murals, examine the variety of genres of mural. Experience murals from the sidewalk and subway. Document your observations through photos, writing and drawing. Variety of mural tours to be written about in journal 9:00-10:30 Introduction to the course, get to know you activities. 10:30-12:00 Mural Tour walking 1:00-2:45 Steve Powers mural tour 3:00-3:30 Questions and discussion of tour 3:30-4:30 brainstorm for our project : Write about a mural your have seen on the tour. Brainstorm our theme and design possibilities. Learn about the narratives and community processes behind murals, examine the many mural genres. What makes a great site? What makes for a good community process? What has a short term vs longterm impact on a community? What makes a story compelling from a visual/ public art perspective? Murals are not a step removed from experience they are part of the lived experience of the everyday. How can this concept be used in the classroom? s, camera

How can everyday stories connect students to historical narratives and experience? Murals are vehicles for collaborative experiential learning. - Community involvement engaging and creating communities -What makes for a good community process? -Organizing students to find community. 9:00-10:30 Mural History discussion and collage. 10:30-12:00 Guest speaker murals as a collaborative classroom project 1:00-2:00 Discuss our mural topic 2:00-4:30 Mural tour walk Collage materials, scissors, glue, Develop your curriculum and visual research/ concept research for our mural Mural history We will analyze the connections between the Mexican Muralists, murals of the 1960s and Philadelphia murals. Students will have analyzed various ways of working with communities. How can community meetings/oral history be used in the creation of a mural? What makes for a good community process? How might community organizing/ working collaboratively impact students? Another exciting aspect of murals is that they can be tied into any curriculum, Anthropology, English, African American Studies and Science. Begin to brainstorm for our mural. WEEK 2 11/12/11 Translation of concepts into a visual form- Photo, printmaking, collage, drawing, Photoshop, illustrator are all possible tools in design of a mural. Construction of a collaborative design Designing for a public space Creating design parameters so large groups can work on designing Researching source material 9:00-10:30 Finalize mural topic 10:30-12:00 Collage and draw for our mural 1:00-2:00 Critique collage designs 3:00-4:30 Scanning and minor adjustments in Photoshop Develop curriculum
