1 Al Stark The Nature of Things December Currently based in Melbourne, Al Stark maintains a comprehensive studio and commission based arts practice that incorporates a diverse range of mediums including drawing, painting, installation, printmaking and sculpture. After extensive period of large-scale wall painting commissions The Nature of Things is a continuum of the painting process, refined and brought into a gallery context. This series of work continues an investigation into colour and form through the contemplation of the metaphysical human experience and it s tentative relationship to a declining natural environment. How do scenes of giant ice slides caused by environmental degradation manifest in our collective dreams? What do the demands and trajectories of our everyday lives, lived within the shadows of ecocide feel like? These works attempt some kind of reckoning through meditative visual narratives that entice contemplation through the dualities of beauty and anxiety, the hyper and benign. They seek to find our spiritual relationship to a disappearing natural world. A world increasingly recalled through memory and anxiety filtered nostalgia. This work aims foremost to inspire a sense of wonder and beauty, followed by a continued dialogue on our collective spirit. It exists in service to nature both internal and to the natural environment that sustains us.
