Sharing and celebrating heritage in your location Christian Hampson Manager: Heritage Near Me
What is heritage? It encompasses many things diversity of natural and cultural places, lifestyles, traditions, objects, history and values. Heritage helps us understand our past, the Australian landscape and who we are.
- Video - What does heritage mean to you?
Heritage is important to me, because it reminds me every day how people lived in the past, and how they live today. It s that thread that connects us all through time: sometimes it could be a building; other times it s a story. But, it s really that connection that binds us all together. It s our identity. It connects us to our wellbeing. It reminds us of how humans have innovated at different times in history, when we needed something, we created it, whether that was a spiritual practice, or it was an object. And, heritage is all of those things. Dr Tracey Avery
Heritage tourism - what is it?
Heritage tourism in NSW NSW received almost 9.5 MILLION international & domestic cultural & heritage visitors visitors spent nearly 56.3 MILLION nights in the state Cultural & heritage visitors spent an estimate $ 7.9 BILLION in NSW
Heritage tourism in NSW Cultural and heritage visitors represented 58 % of international travellers to NSW Visit history/heritage buildings, sites or monuments (63%) was the most popular cultural and heritage activity, followed by visit museum or art gallery (58%)
- Heritage is a story- We want to help you tell it
- Video - Heritage Near Me
Heritage Near Me - Our goal - Local heritage values are protected, celebrated and shared throughout NSW
Incentives program Heritage Activation Grants Funding will be available for projects designed to increase public enjoyment of local heritage, such as physical works for public access, public programming, strategy development and business planning.
Incentives program Local Heritage Grants Local Heritage Grants will help communities determine priorities for their local heritage and provide resources to act on these priorities. Funding and technical expertise will be available to support collaborative solutions through community-based projects and activities.
Examples of activation projects - Maitland Co-created/crowdsourced heritage/art Moveable mini-museums Mashups of historical and contemporary images in exhibition spaces and online Shop front activation An app to investigate the history of High Street Ephemeral installations light projections and temporary installations
Examples of activation projects - Maitland Laneway projections This piece is motion responsive and obliquely references the prevalence of water in Maitland s history. Projected elements such as birds, waves and other shifting graphics gently and subtly immerse the audience in an abstract reflective experience of flood-prone landscape.
Heritage Outreach Tools Our resources will be behind you Heritage Near Me is producing heritage outreach tools, such as the Heritage Near Me app, and virtual tours of heritage places to help support local councils and communities in the promotion and enjoyment of their local heritage.
Heritage Near Me App

If we really wish to put an end to our ongoing international and social problems, we must eventually declare mother Earth as the common heritage of all. Jacque Fresco
