Butterfly Band Pattern Crochet pattern by Alice Bakker-Sicking Crochet a Butterfly Band Crochet from now on butterflies in a band. For instance, along a blanket edge or replace the Butterfly Band in the Sophie s Universe blanket (part 14 of the CAL 2015). The Butterfly Band was made by me as part of the Sophie s Universe. Because people liked it, I have written the pattern down in this document. The rounds match the rounds of the Sophie s Universe, so you lose no stitches or height and can continue with part 15 of the CAL. I imagine that with some adjustments the Band also can be used in other blankets or as edge on another work. The butterflies are best first exercised in a swatch before starting the band. Behind the butterflies flowers are crocheted, so it looks like they are fluttering above a field of flowers. More information on my blogs: (Dutch) (English) Yarn and hook I have made the band as part of the Sophie s Universe CAL with SMC Bravo and hook 4.0 mm in different colors. U.S. terms are used St = stitch Sk = skip Ch = chain Sc -= single crochet SLst = slip stitch Bpsc = backpost single crochet Hdc = half double crochet Bphdc = backpost half double crochet Dc = double crochet Bpdc = Backpost double crochet Trc = Treble crochet Dtr2 tog Bobble = 2 dtrc crocheted together in 1 loop and 1 spot Tr3 tog Bobble = 3 trc crocheted together in 1 loop and 1 spot Dtrc = double treble crochet Fptrc= Frontpost treble crochet SU = Sophie s Universe ** = repeat pattern between stars Attention: Rounds or rows are to be crocheted in one direction. Elsewhere the butterflies can t be made! 1 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
The basics Cast on -- crochet sc or use other stitches along the edge of your work or blanket to make the basic row. You can also start with a long chain and crochet a row of sc. If necessary crochet in corners 1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc. Skip this round in the SU. Extra rounds -- In the SU there is an optional round with back-post stitches (bpsc or bpdc) under and above the butterfly band. It is nice to make these as part of your band, but not necessary. Crochet the first round (in SU round 91) before round 0 and the last (in SU round 98) round after round 6. For more details on these rounds, look on Dedri s site. Starting a round -- Start with a standing dc or standing sc or attach with a loop and crochet ch 3 or ch 1 instead of 1 dc or 1 sc. Ending a round -- End with a slst in the first dc or sc of your round and clip the yarn. Oblong blanket --The pattern is written with the SU or another square blanket in mind, but can easly be adjusted for another blanket. Just skip the corner stitches and start and end each row with at least 4 dc s or 4 sc s. Don t forget to start each row on the right side and count your stitches in the first round.. List of rounds and relation to the Sophie s Universe Round 0 round of dc -- round 92 in SU st on each side part 13 Round 1 butterfly spots -- round 93 in SU -- part14 Round 2 small wings -- round 94 in SU Round 3 large wings -- round 95 in SU Round 4 leaves -- extra round behind round 3 Round 5 flowers -- round 96 in SU st on each side Round 6 round of dc -- round 97 in SU st on each side 2 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Round 0 and 1 -- Starting the Butterfly Band Round 0 starting the band -- crochet a round of dc. In a square blanket crochet in each corner 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the chain-space and start in one of the corners. Skip this round in SU, you already made it in round 92. Distribution butterflies Assign the places in round 0 where the butterflies will flutter in your band with place markers or pins. Each butterfly needs 7 stitches. In between the butterflies an equal set of stitches is needed. In my SU I have distributed 8 butterflies on each side in such an order that the outermost butterflies are on the same spot as the moon-shaped flowers and the middle of the side is exactly between the 2 inner butterflies. The distribution becomes: corner, 20 dc, bf, 12 dc, bf, 10 dc, bf, 8 dc, bf, 8 dc, bf, 8 dc, bf, 10 dc, bf, 12 dc, bf, 20 dc, and corner. (Totally 168 st) Another distribution of the butterflies is making 9 butterflies and in between 10 dc and until the corners also 10 dc. (Totally 167 st) In a oblong blanket you crochet 8, 10 or 12 stitches between the butterflies. For instance 4 dc-bf-8 dc-bf -8 dc-bf-8 dc -bf-4 dc But feel free to place the butterflies anywhere you like Round 1 start in one of the corners of your square blanket or on a side of an oblong blanket on the right side. Crochet 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc in the chain-space in each corner. Crochet only dc in this round and crochet on the butterfly spot, ch 7, skipping 7 st. (photo) (Round 93 in SU) 3 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Round 2 Small Wings Round 2 Crochet sc in this round. Start the round in a corner. Crochet in the corners in the chainspace, 1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc. On the spot of the butterfly crochet: 1 sc in the 7 chain-space of round 1 (photo 1) Ch 2 1 sc in the chain-space of round 1 Tr3 tog Bobble = 3 Fptrc in 2 nd st of round 0 crocheted together (in the right corner beneath the chain-space) (photo 2) 1 sc in the chain-space of round 1 (middle sc) (Mark this st) Tr3 tog Bobble = 3 Fptrc in 5 th st of round 0 crocheted together (in the left corner beneath the chain-space) (photo 3) 1 sc in chain-space of round 1 Ch 2 1 sc in the chain-space of round 1 or in the first st of round 1 Continue with making sc in round 1. (Round 94 in SU) Attention: You can mark the middle sc, so you can easily find the space A and B in the next round. The last sc of the Butterfly can be made in the chain space of round 1 or in the first st after the butterfly of round 1. I liked the last option, but you have to find out what is comfortable for you. Beware not to increase your stitches too much in this round. 4 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Round 3 - Large Wings B A Round 3 Start in a corner. Crochet in the corner in the chain-space: 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, crochet another 2 dc and continue with *ch 1/sk 1 st, 1 dc*, repeat until butterfly spot and in between the butterflies. Always end with a dc before the butterfly, don t worry about extra stitches, you can correct in a next round. Before you reach the corner make another 2 dc, so you end each side with 4 dc. In the butterfly spot: 1 trc in space (A) right beside middle sc of round 2 (photo 1&2) Dtr2tog Bobble = 2 x dtrc in space A crocheted together(photo 3) 1 trc in space A (photo 4) Ch 3 1 Bpsc around middle sc of round 2, Ch 3 1 trc in space B, left of middle sc of round 2 (photo 5) Dtr2tog Bobble = 2 x dtrc in space B crocheted together 1 trc in space B (photo 6) Continue with 1 dc in round 2 and repeat ** of round 3 (round 95 in SU) 5 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Round 4 - Leaves Round 4 You are working behind round 3! Start in the first 1 chain-space after a corner on one side of round 3. Crochet behind the stitches of round 3. Crochet *1 sc in the skipped stitch of round 2, 1 back-post sc around the next dc of round 3*. Repeat these stitches until the butterfly spot and in between the butterflies. On the corners stop crocheting in the last 1 chain-space and crochet ch 5 behind the corner. (Photo 6) Turn the blanket and continue on the next side. Crochet no dc s in the corner. In the butterfly spot: Continue round 4. (Not in SU) Ch 3 behind the first large wing (photo 5) Skip the treble and bobble stitches Sc around the first ch 3 of round 3 Dc around the butterfly body, making a long loop, (photo s 1, 2,3) Sc around the second ch 3 of round 3, skip the treble and bobble stitches Ch 3 behind the second large wing (photo 5) backside backside 6 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Round 5 V-Flowers Round 5 - Start in a corner. Crochet in the corners in the chain-space 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, and crochet 6 dc until first chain-space of round 3. Continue with 2 dc (V) in each chain-space of round 3. Repeat until last chain-space and crochet the 6 remaining dc until corner. In the butterfly spot: Bphdc around first trc (Photo 1) Bpsc around top of dtr2tog Bobble (Photo 2) Bphdc around second trc Bpdc around dc of round 4 (Photo 3) Bphdc around third trc Bpsc around top of dtr2tog Bobble Bphdc around fourth trc Continue with the 2 V-flowers (Round 96 in SU) 7 Elzeblaadje Alice Bakker-Sicking 2015
Last round counting the stitches Round 6 Last round of the band Start in a corner, Crochet in the corners in the chain-space, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Continue with crocheting dc, also on the butterfly spots (7 st). On each butterfly spot you can decrease 1 st by crocheting 2 dc together. But first start counting the stitches on each side. In the SU at this point each side counts 174 stitches. Does your side count more decrease some stitches as mentioned above. Does your side counts less, increase some stitches on the butterfly spot. (Round 97 in SU) Continue with round 98 in SU. Enjoy your crochet. Much fun with the butterfly band Elzeblaadje / Alice Bakker-Sicking With thanks to Ellen Hartmeijer for some advice.
