1 Quilts for Katrina Kids October 17, 2005 Piketon High School & Community Action Committee of Pike County, Inc.

2 These quilts were hand-painted (with fabric paint) by the art students at Piketon Junior/Senior High School. Our intention is to comfort and inspire the kids who have been affected by the hurricane, Katrina. Every student in all the art classes worked on a quilt, either with a partner or individually. The sewing was done by the home economics class under the auspices of Mrs. Burns, their teacher. More sewing, fabric and moral support were offered by Mrs. Lu Minter, Suellen Slagle, and Mrs. Burns. Thank you SO much! Many folks in the school and community donated material including Kelly Hines, Becky Schreick, Carol McFarland, and Lauren Akers and thanks to Guhl s Fabrics for the donation of a bolt of fabric. Thanks to Mr. Crawford, our liaison between Piketon High School and Pike Community Action, and the Community Action people who donated many items as well. Thanks to those who anonymously donated material which was waiting at the classroom door each morning. And, of course, thanks to Mr. McCann who is a tremendous supporter of worthy activities at our school. After this one-day show, we will be packing up all the quilts and the folks from Pike County Community Action will be taking these quilts to Louisiana. While we pack, we will tuck a prayer tie envelope into each quilt. These prayer ties were prepared for us by Keia Cade s grandmother. They, along with the quilts, offer thoughts and consolation to those devastated by this hurricane. Meanwhile, although some of the students are hard pressed to give up these wonderful quilts, we know that it is more blessed to give than to receive and each student will always be able to say, I helped.

The quilts will accompany the school district's fifth shipment of baby, hygiene and other goods to the ravaged area. ADVERTISEMENT "These will be going down Wednesday. They were made by the art department and with each quilt is a small prayer and the student's address," said David Crawford, a high school teacher who helped with the project. From beginning to end, the quilts were made by students in home economics and art classes in grades 7 through 12. There are 87 quilts with themes ranging from faith to cartoon characters and peaceful landscapes. "The kids really put their whole hearts into these," said Crawford. "People donated cloth and supplies and they used them. People gave so much." The public had an opportunity to view the quilts Monday during an all-day blood drive event at the school. About 25 of the artistic blankets were displayed in the gymnasium for students and blood donors to view. 49 In addition to making quilts, students also have overseen several blood drives and fundraisers for Hurricane Katrina survivors. The students are partnered with the Pike and Highland counties Community Action organizations to send goods to those in need. ADVERTISEMENT "When the hurricane first came through, we did a fundraiser with community action," Crawford said. "We've raised enough money to send several semis full of stuff. They tell us what they need and we get it."
