3 Chicken scratch sample Redwork sample Handouts/Publications: Publication, Beginning Creative Stitchery CT-MMB.710 Introductory exercise What Do You Know? Handout Basic Embroidery Stitch Samples Project Supplies enough for each participant: 12-inch square muslin #2 pencils Masking tape (approximately one roll per two participants) Embroidery needles Needle threaders Embroidery floss Embroidery scissors Embroidery hoops - size 6-inch or 8-inch Facilities Required: The PowerPoint presentation is recommended to show stitches used for sampler in large format. Therefore a screen, projector, computer and electrical outlets, will be needed. A laser type pointer is helpful in highlighting stitch sequences. Participants will need to be seated around tables for ease of making samples. Good lighting is needed for the completion of the stitch sampler. Small, bright tabletop work lights can be brought in for use. NOTE: If electrical power is not available, utilize the publications listed under the Materials List, and print out the PowerPoint presentation and Facilitator Script and Notes. Be sure to have samples of the stitches to be taught. Prior to Program: 1. Gather listed embroidery samples. Ensure you are familiar with and can identify each type of embroidery. Determine how you will display the samples. (If you do not have embroidery samples, please check with other Cooperative Extension Service offices, Homemaker leaders and others to locate embroidery samples.) 2. Gather listed props. Determine how you will display and demonstrate these items. 3. Copy handouts and publications for each participant. 4. Set-up listed presentation materials. Practice using the laptop, projector and pointer. Go through the PowerPoint presentation prior to your program. 5. Practice each stitch you will be teaching during the program. Ensure that you are comfortable creating the stitches and can demonstrate each stitch. 3
4 Presenting the Program: Program Introduction (5-10 minutes): Review slides 2, 3 and 4 of the PowerPoint presentation. These slides cover introductions and sign-in, housekeeping items, icebreaker activity and program objectives. Activity 1 (5 minutes): Slides 5 and 6 cover the first objective: Participants will discuss basic history of embroidery. In the Icebreaker activity participants discussed handmade family heirlooms and their historical significance to the individual and the family. Refer back to this discussion as you share the history of embroidery. Activity 2 (10 minutes): Distribute What Do You Know? matching exercise. Allow 5 minutes for participants to match the definition to the type of creative stitchery. After participants complete the exercise, show examples and show slides 7 and 8 with the names of the types of embroidery. Direct participants to check their exercise answers as you review types and names of embroidery. An answer key is provided for the What Do You Know? matching exercise. Activity 3 (10 minutes): Introduce the supplies, tools and equipment on slides 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Demonstrate the props for each slide. Allow participants to examine the supplies, tools and equipment. Activity 4 (10-15 minutes): As you go through slides 14, 15, 16 and 17 how to finish the edges of the fabric (masking tape for this program) and how to transfer the design to fabric, demonstrate how to place the fabric in the hoop, how to cut and separate the strands of floss and how to thread the needle with the floss. Activity 5 (60 minutes): Point out the steps for one stitch at a time, allowing time for participants to complete the stitch sample, before moving on to the next stitch. Utilize slides as you review each type of stitch. Activity 6 (5 minutes): Finish reviewing slides 35 39, as you explain how to clean embroidery projects, check for identification of each stitch taught on slide 36 and briefly share about other types of embroidery. Program Review (5 minutes): Review the original program objectives on slide 40. Ask if any participants need any additional assistance. Review slide 41 to ensure that participants return supplies, tools and equipment. NOTE: Invite participants to become 4-H volunteers to teach others basic embroidery skills. Also, invite participants to sign-up for other CES programming. NOTE: Distribute End-of-Program Evaluation and blank envelopes. Ask participants to complete and return the evaluation prior to leaving the program. Ask them to self-address the envelope for a three month follow-up evaluation. 4
5 After the Program: Reflection: Document strengths and weaknesses of this program for future improvements. Note additional needs, props, etc. Incorporate participant ideas to refine program for future presentations. Suggestions for additional program activities: A follow-up program introducing more advanced embroidery techniques would be ideal. Follow-up: Mail participants the Follow-up Evaluation, Dear Friend letter and stamped return envelope, three months after this program. Note: Place follow-up date on your calendar.
