Instructions: Helpful Hints: Ensure that the layers of wash-away non-woven stabilizer are hooped tight within hoop, but do not stretch the stabilizer. The stabilizer is thin, but is made to support a lot of stitches. However, these lavish lace embroidery designs contains thousands of stitches which can pull the wash-away stabilizer very easily, distorting the registration as the embroidery progresses. Some hoops snug tighter than others. We suggest applying Hoop Grip Tape to the outer edge of the inner hoop, or using another method to add a gripping agent, to firmly hoop the stabilizer. Securely hooped stabilizer will prevent distortion and give you beautiful lace. Continued on page 2
Take time to check the balance of the bobbin and needle thread tensions. The photo below shows correctly balanced tension in the middle embroidered section. The two smaller extensions show less balanced tensions, which can contribute to misalignment or undue pull in the stitching. Unbalanced Balanced Unbalanced Use templates to determine which lace design(s) will best compliment and fit on your selected project. Although you can use conven tional printer paper to print templates, using Translucent Foundation Paper will allow you to see through the paper, making it easier to align the designs. Be sure to trim away excess paper around stitch field for easier arranging. Tape the templates in place using Sewer s Fix It Tape. The low tack adhesive allows the tape to be removed easily without leaving adhesive residue on fabric. Use a hoop size that is just large enough for the embroidery design(s). This helps minimize shifting of stabilizer layers, as well as reduce waste of stabilizer. When removing and reloading the hoop during the embroidery process to replace the bobbin, be sure to support the hooped stabilizer, and lay it flat on the work surface to keep the stabilizer taut when not on the machine. Be sure to keep the non-woven wash away stabilizer in an air tight container or bag, as humidity in the air can compromise the stability of the stabilizer. The lace designs are digitized for a selection of thread colors. For a single color lace, simply embroider the color sequence in one thread color. Create a Single Lace Accent 1. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for setting up your machine for computerized embroidery. Insert a new size 75 embroidery needle and thread with desired embroidery thread. Insert a bobbin prewound with embroidery bobbinfil thread. 2. Hoop 2 3 layers of wash-away non-woven stabilizer. 3. Select and embroider desired lace design, following color sequence chart included with the designs, using the thread colors desired. 4. Remove lace from hoop and trim away excess stabilizer. 5. Thoroughly soak and rinse the lace to remove as much of the stabilizer as possible. The more stabilizer that is removed the softer the lace will be. 6. Air dry the lace on a terry towel, gently smoothing the wet lace back into shape. If the lace is still stiff after drying, simply soak and rinse the lace piece again. 2
7. To reshape after lace is dry, place lace bobbin thread side up on a soft pressing surface, and press using wool setting and light steam, covering lace with a cotton press cloth. Allow the lace to dry after steaming. Embroider Fashion Lace with Extensions Note: The Fashionable Freestanding Lace collection includes three shirt fronts for both 6" x 10" and 5" x 7" hoops. The 5" x 7" designs are split into A and B sections with added alignment stitches to achieve seamless results. The collection also includes a repeatable border for 4" x 4" hoops using alignment stitches. For Shirt Fronts, Including Designs LACE402-A, B, C; LACE410-A, B, C; LACE418-A, B, C 1. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for setting up your machine for computerized embroidery. Insert a new size 75 embroidery needle and thread with desired embroidery thread. Insert a bobbin prewound with embroidery bobbinfil thread. 2. Print a template of the desired C lace design on Translucent Foundation Paper. Cut template along the fill stitch edges. Set aside. 3. Hoop 2-3 layers of wash-away non-woven stabilizer. 4. Select and embroider lace extensions A and B, following color sequence chart. You may choose to use only one extension. Use either extension A or B to customize the shirt front lace to best fit the shirt or project you will be applying the completed lace to. Hint: If your machine accommodates larger hoop sizes; merge both A and B extensions for one hooping to economize on stabilizer. 5. Remove embroidery from hoop. Trim away excess stabilizer, leaving approximately ½" extra all the way around the embroidery (including the alignment stitching). 3
6. Hoop 2-3 layers of wash-away non-woven stabilizer. 7. Select and embroider the C lace shirt front design that coordinates with the A and B extensions you have embroidered. Stitch color 1, the alignment stitches. 8. Remove hoop from embroidery unit, but DO NOT unhoop the stabilizer. 9. Place the printed template on the hooped stabilizer, aligning print crossmarks with stitched crossmarks. The translucent template is easier to align than a standard paper template. 10. Mark a guideline along the fill stitch edges using an erasable marking pen. 11. Position the embroidered extensions over the hooped stabilizer, aligning crossmarks and fill stitch edges. Tape the extensions in place using Sewer s Fix It Tape, keeping the tape out of the lace shirt front embroidery area (refer to the template). Hint: Wash-away basting tape can be used in conjunction with Sewer s Fix It Tape for a more secure positioning. 4
12. Stitch the shirt front lace design, following the color sequence chart. Reduce the stitching speed until the extension(s) are secured under the stitching lace. Watch that the stabilizer edges on the extensions stay flat and do not cause a tangle during stitching. 13. Remove from lace hoop and trim away excess stabilizer. 14. Thoroughly soak and rinse the lace to remove as much of the stabilizer as possible. The more stabilizer that is removed the softer the lace will be. 15. Air dry the lace on a terry towel, gently smoothing the wet lace back into shape. If the lace is still stiff after drying, simply soak and rinse the lace piece again. 16. To reshape after lace is dry, place lace bobbin side up on a soft pressing surface, and press using wool setting and light steam, covering lace with a cotton press cloth. Allow the lace to dry after steaming. For Repeatable Borders, Including Designs LACE414-A and LACE414-B The two repeatable border designs work similarly to the shirt fronts, as both of these border designs feature alignment stitches as well. Follow the basics steps above for the shirt fronts to combine these designs. 5
Option 1: Repeat design LACE414-A. Option 2: Combine two of design LACE414-A with one design LACE414-B. Accenting with Fashionable Freestanding Lace Note: When topstitching a single color lace accent, use the same embroidery thread. When topstitching a multi-color lace accent, use clear or smoke monofilament thread. Monofilament thread is ideal if an outer edge of lace has different thread colors, you won t need to change thread colors. Clear works well for light, pastel and bright color lace and fabrics, while smoke is ideal for dark, jewel-tone lace and fabric. For best stitching results, use a size 80 metallic needle when stitching with monofilament thread. Topstitch the Finished Lace 1. Complete lace as instructed above. 2. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for setting up your machine for sewing. Insert a bobbin prewound with all-purpose sewing thread. Thread needle with same embroidery thread or monofilament thread see note above. 3. Position and pin or tape lace in place with Sewer s Fix It Tape. Wash-away basting tape also works well; if it gets stitched through, it will wash out in laundering. Hint: If needed, you can carefully trim off small areas of lace to further customize the fit of the lace to your project. Be certain to straight stitch, then satin stitch that area securely using matching embroidery thread. 4. Satin stitch over the fill stitch edging, and then straight stitch or zigzag along the remaining edges. 6
Sew-in the Completed Lace 1. Complete lace as instructed above. 2. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for setting up your machine for sewing. Insert a bobbin prewound with all-purpose sewing thread. Thread needle with same embroidery thread or monofilament thread see note above. 3. Position and pin or tape lace in place with Sewer s Fix It Tape, positioning the fill stitch edging just inside a seam or hem stitching line. Wash-away basting tape also works well; if it gets stitched through, it will wash out in laundering. 4. Stitch the hem or seam, catching the fill stitch edging with the stitching. 5. Straight stitch or zigzag along the remaining edges. Care instructions: If possible, turn project inside out when laundering. Machine wash gentle or hand wash; hang to dry.
