Having retired from a career in education business links training, Kay completed a City & Guilds diploma in Stitched Textiles and now runs her own experimental textile workshops.

2 KAY LEECH is a mixed-media textile artist from Culgaith, Penrith, and the winner of the 2018 Friends of Higham Scholarship. Taking inspiration from her surroundings, Kay uses paint, print and collage with hand and machine embroidery to create her pieces. She has exhibited her work locally and at the Scottish Quilting Show. Having retired from a career in education business links training, Kay completed a City & Guilds diploma in Stitched Textiles and now runs her own experimental textile workshops. Kay s scholarship award included nine Higham courses: Sketching with an ipad, Geology of Britain, Papermaking with Plants and Textiles, Freeform Crochet, The Ice Age and its Aftermath in Lakeland, Circles in Stone and Printmaking. These courses and the geology of the Cumbrian landscape have informed Kay s first solo exhibition - Connections.

3 A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME Quilt - cotton, threads, 6 x 2 6. One of the first ideas I had was to produce a piece based on the Geological Time Scale and it resulted in a quilt incorporating applique and reverse applique images and free machine quilting. LONG MEG Wood-cut prints - paper, cotton, threads, beads. William Wordsworth wrote Next to Stonehenge it is beyond dispute the most notable relic that this or probably any other country contains. Moved by the grandeur of Long Meg and Wordsworth s poetry, I have tried to capture the essence of this stone circle. FOSSILS Hand-dyed silk series - silk, wire, cotton, threads. I love the form of fossils and have incorporated them into a number of my other pieces including A journey through time and It s a different language. These pieces incorporate a variety of techniques including simple block printing, ipad sketched images and stitch. MAN-MADE LANDSCAPE Etchings and pictures - paper, Vilene, cotton, photos, threads. Stone walls, mining and quarrying have all shaped the Cumbrian landscape. You can t escape the miles of stone walls which vary from area to area and reflect the local geology. Mining and quarrying can be dated back to the 12th Century and the physical evidence can still be seen. ICE Textured series - monoprinted cotton, Tyvek, Lutradur, organza, beads, metallic threads. Real snow and ice followed my course on The Ice Age and its Aftermath inspiring these highly textured abstract pieces.

4 IT S A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE Hanging - muslin, threads, 8 x 2 4. This is a response to the completely new geological vocabulary that I encountered. It involves images created through Gum Arabic transfer and free machine embroidered words. The hanging is supported by a printed glossary of definitions. THROUGH THE WINDOW Collage - Lutradur, felt, threads. Produced in response to a challenge by Northern Threads, a group of textile artists that I belong to, this picture is based on the view through the window at Higham and the carved woodwork. UNDER THE ICE Quilted picture - calico, Inktense blocks, markal sticks, threads. Hand-quilting, trapunto quilting and hand and machine embroidery have been used to interpret the water-rounded pebbles formed beneath a glacier in an Esker. MINERALS 3D objects and pictures - felt, tissue paper, Decovil light, threads, beads, wire. Inspired by minerals within my husband s collection and slices of slate this series contains three-dimensional pieces incorporating crochet-buttons, wire, stitch and beading. HANDMADE PAPER Series of printed papers - paper, ink, threads, beads. Handmade and printed papers stitched with embroidery threads and beads.

THE FRIENDS OF HIGHAM SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is given in recognition of a talented person to enable them to complete their own proposed project with the support of courses at Higham.

5 THE FRIENDS OF HIGHAM SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is given in recognition of a talented person to enable them to complete their own proposed project with the support of courses at Higham. The award consists of a place on three or more courses and can include individual tutorial time, space to work and accommodation to a minimum value of The winner is expected to present their completed work to an audience at Higham. The scholarship is open to anyone over 16 years old. To apply you must complete an application form which asks you to describe yourself and your proposed project.
