1 Not Too Fussy Pieced 12 x 12 finished size The Not Too Fussy block is 9-patch block with a large center square that is a perfect spot for fussy cutting, perhaps centering a fabric motif or using a photograph that you have printed onto fabric. Alternate Names and History The Not Too Fussy block has a very brief history as an original block of quilterscache.com. Why not fussy cut the center, as in this example! 2 I found this block on the internet: as an 8 block. It is an original block, meaning that quilterscache.com owns the design. We have permission to use the block in our block of the month, provided that we follow the rules. The quilterscache.com copy write details are appended to the back of this document. Note that we are only using the design. We are not using the quilterscache.com pattern. I have made adjustments to increase the size of the block. I also have written all the instructions and taken photographs as I completed my block. There should be no copy write issues with regard to the distribution of this material. Fabric requirements: Note, if you plan to fussy cut the center from different fabric, adjust the fabric requirements, accordingly. Background: half of a fat quarter Neutral Dark Blue: 14 x 10 Dark Blue Light Blue: 2 strip of a fat quarter Light Blue Cutting: Fabric Cut Size Number to Cut Piece (see drawing) Background 16 ½ x 2 1 A 7 ½ x 3 ¾ 2 B Light Blue 16 ½ x 2 1 A Dark Blue 7 ½ x 3 ¾ 2 B 6 ½ x 6 ½ 1 C Arrange Dark Blue and Background 7 ½ x 3 ¾ rectangles (B) face up on the cutting mat. Make sure that all pieces of fabric are right side up on the cutting mat. Cut the rectangles on the diagonal, from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. 3 Sew all seams with a scant ¼. Four Patches: 1. With the 16 ½ x 2 Background (A) and 16 ½ x 2 Light Blue (A), right sides together, sew on one of the long edges. 2. Press to the darker fabric. 3. Even up one end. 4. Cut into eight 2 segments. 5. Sew 2 of the eight 2 segments together, right sides together and turned so that dark and light are touching. 6. Press seams in opposite directions. You may need to remove a stitch to press in opposite directions, forming a 4-patch in the middle. 7. The 4-patch units should measure 3 ½ x 3 ½. Instructions and photographs by Karen Lindley, July,

4 Rectangle piecing: 1. Flip a Background triangle (B) over on a Dark Blue triangle (B), right sides together. 2. VERY IMPORTANT: Do not line the pieces up evenly. They must be offset by ¼ as shown in the diagram and photograph to the left. 3. Align the pieces so that a wing, bunny ears or dog tail is visible at both ends. A scant ¼ of the wing should show (circled in diagram). 4. Sew and press seam toward the dark. Wrong: Corners are perfectly matched, but the unit will not square up correctly. Correct: 5. Repeat steps 1 through 3, completing the remaining 3 rectangles. 6. Trim to 3 ½ x 6 ½ taking care that the ¼ intersection of your ruler lines up with the point at the seams (see arrows in diagram below). Instructions and photographs by Karen Lindley, July,

5 Assemble: 1. Lay out the completed units, careful that the dark triangles are on the outside edges all the way around and that the dark squares of the 4-patch units are pointing in to the center (see page 1). 2. Sew Row 1. Press seams toward center. Note that your Row 1 will not look like mine, because I accidentally cut the rectangle units in the opposite direction. Still, the dark triangle is on the outside edge, and the dark squares in the 4-patch units march toward the center. 3. Press toward 4-patch. 4. Unit should measure 3 ½ x 12 ½. 5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to complete Row Sew Row 2. Press seams toward center. Again, your rectangle units look different, because mine are cut in the opposite direction. 7. Sew the rows together, matching seams. 8. The finished block should measure 12 ½ x 12 ½. Your dark triangles will look different than mine, because you are cutting yours according to the diagram on page 1. Instructions and photographs by Karen Lindley, July,
