For Back: Hem the 16 inch side of each of the two back pieces. 3 Quilting Ag Themes in the Classroom Lesson Plan* Prepared by Donna Oliver Grades 3 and above Maine State Parameters for Essential Learning English Language Arts: B-5, Grades 3-5 Students write letters to complete a process D-2, Grades 3-5 Students apply the rules of capitalization, punctuation mechanics, and spelling to communicate. Social Studies: A1: Students apply critical thinking, a research process, and discipline-based process and knowledge from civics/government, economics, geography, and history in authentic contexts. Grades 3-5 Students identify and answer research questions related to social studies, by locating and selecting information and presenting findings. Math: C. Geometry :Students use measurement and observation to describe objects based on their sizes and shapes; model or construct twodimensional and three-dimensional objects; solve prolems involving geometric properties; compute areas and volumes based on object properties and dimensions ; and perform transformations on geometric figures. Students write to organizations to ask if they might be able to use a donated quilt. Students choose an agricultural theme they would like to investigate. Students find and trace or draw 12 pictures that depict that theme. Students color pictures using fabric crayons. Students or adult iron crayon picture onto fabric squares. Student choose fabric for sashing. Students sew top with help from adult volunteers. Volunteers assemble and bind quilt. Students tack finished quilt. Students donate quilt(s) to organization. * Our fourth-grade classes spend a hour each Friday afternoon working on this as a Service-Learning Project. We donate quilts to local Fire and Ambulance, Project Linus (children in the hospital), and Spruce Run (shelter for battered women and children).

5 Make N Take Oliver-Quilts Made by 4 th -Grade Students Materials: 1 package fabric crayons paper for tracing ( I use computer quality 8.5 x 11) coloring book or clip art for pictures to trace 2 yards of fabric for top sashing 1 yard white broadcloth for top Squares 3 yards fabric for backing batting for a 48 X 70 inch quilt Thread Crochet cotton or embroidery floss for tacking Directions: Note: all stitching is ¼ inch Cut x 10.5 squares from white broadcloth. Choose 12 pictures to trace onto paper Trace pictures and color with fabric crayons ( some students like to be more original and draw their own.) Iron pictures onto white squares following directions on crayon box. (Polyester fabric works better than muslin) Cut fabric for the front of quilt as follows: *8 four and a half by ten and a half inch strips *9 four and a half by 44 inch lengths (material width) * Arrange picture squares in order wanted (3x4) * Sew to 4.5 by 10.5 strips, making a length with three pictures and two strips.(4 lengths total). Make 3 more lengths. * Connect above mentioned lengths with the 4.5 by 44 inch lengths for the horizontal sashing * Put a sash on the top and bottom.

6 .* You should now have four pieces of sashing left. Sew two together and attach to one side of the quilt * Repeat for the other side. Front is finished. Finishing: Fold the 3 yards of backing over in half and cut across. I then sew an edge from each side together making (roughly) about 90 x 108 piece for the back of the quilt. Lay back piece down with wrong side facing up Lay batting on top of this Lay top, face up, on this and pin in place. Trim edges I use leftover trim to cut 2.5 lengths to use for binding Iron the 2.5 lengths in half and pin to sides of quilt. Sew. Remove pins and turn over to other side and pin again. I hand sew this side of the binding, I repeat above step for top and bottom binding of the quilt. Note: If you want to skip binding stage, use envelope style by assembling with top and bottom pieces facing and put batting on top of that and pin. Trim. Sew edges leaving a small opening to pull quilt through so it is right side out. Then stitch opening closed. Tacking: Use embroidery floss or crochet cotton to tack quilt. We tack three across and three down for each square by pulling thread through and making a double knot and then cutting thread leaving about an inch of thread.
