2 Have FUN Creating a Pretty Linen Pillow on Your

3 This is an easy project to reinforce what you have already learned: Set Quilt Area Saving files to the QM Add Pattern Auto Center Properties Move Undo SPI Speed Rotate Next Save Layout Read through the instructions before beginning. Note: Don t forget what you have already learned about the care of your machine. Cleaning and oiling are an important part of machine maintenance. If you need a refresher, check the instruction manual that came with the machine or watch the videos on the tinlizzie18.com website. 4 Materials: 15 x 29 fiber-fill pillow form (or use poly fiberfil to stuff the pillow) 36 wide x 27 high white linen for pillow top 1 ½ yards 45 floral fabric for pillow back and ruffle 1 ½ yards 45 lightweight muslin for backing fabric Poly crib size batting (keeps the linen bright white) Black 40 wt. embroidery thread for stitching the designs on the pillow front Bright pink 40 wt. embroidery thread for stitching the pillow back Bobbin quilting thread Sewing thread to sew the pillow together Needle and thread for sewing the opening closed To color the butterflies: paint and textile medium or fabric crayons

5 This pillow is fun to stitch and color is added by painting or coloring the butterflies for a novel technique to add interest to the design. The basic steps are: Load the fabrics/batting on the frame Load the Pillow design on the QM Choose the QM designs to stitch on pillow front Edit the designs to fit the area Stitch the outline of the Pillow Stitch the QM design layout Stitch a meandering design on the pillow back Remove fabric and trim Color in the butterflies Create and apply the ruffle Sew the pillow pieces together Hand stitch opening closed Pillow Front Pillow Back

6 Measure the Pillow. The pillow used in the project measures 15 in height and 29 in length. However, to create a fuller pillow, at the machine measurements 1 less will be used (14 x 28 ).

7 This is the design layout to be created for the pillow front The Pillow design is loaded on the QM first and sized (rectangle). QM designs are loaded, moved and rotated into position to create the layout. The design is stitched.

8 There are many products on the market for coloring on fabric; these are only some of the choices: fabric crayons, acrylic paints and paint blocks. Use textile medium when working with textile paints and follow manufacturer s directions.

9 Fabric crayons: color directly on the fabric. Paint blocks: use with textile medium or water. Stencil paint pots: dry brush on fabric. Acrylic paint: use with textile medium.

10 A variety of threads can be used for stitching. Because paint or crayons will be used for coloring next to the threads, cotton thread would soak up the paint so would not be a good choice for this project. For the project 40 wt. polyester embroidery thread was chosen because it will not soak up the paint colors. It also will give some experience sewing with this product. For this project black was chosen for the pillow top stitching and the bright pink for the pillow back.

11 Pre-wash and press the fabrics well (do not use spray starch on the linen fabric to be painted because it could interfere with the paint or crayon adhesion). Straighten the grain of the fabric pieces. Load the muslin fabric for the backing, place down the batting and then place down the linen fabric cut 36 wide x 27 long. Baste the linen to the batting and backing fabric. Follow the display screen prompts to set the Quilt Area.

12 Load the Pillow design on the USB stick. Place the USB in the QM. Under the Home icon tap File Manger. Locate the Pillow design on the USB (source) and copy to the Project folder created in a previous lesson. Under the Home icon tap Add Pattern. Find the Pillow.qcc file under the Projects folder. Tap Select Pattern.

13 The design (pillow) size needs to be defined. Under the Edit icon tap Properties. Tap the Width number and type in 28, then tap OK. Tap the Height number, type in 14 and tap OK.

14 There is a grid on the screen that will be used for aligning the elements of the design. Locate the center vertically and horizontally, of the 28 x 14 rectangle for the Pillow.

15 Under the Home icon tap Add Pattern. Locate the Sets folder and select JM006 JANIES FEATH BLK.qcc. Under the Edit icon tap Move. Drag the design and use the arrows to move the design to the center of the rectangle. Tap Check.

16 Under the Home icon choose Add Pattern. In the Sets folder select JM006 JANIE FEATH BLK3.qcc. Under the Edit icon tap Move. Use the arrows to move the design down onto the rectangle as shown. Under the Edit icon tap Rotate, then tap 90 Degrees CCW to rotate the design. Move the design into position so there are two grid squares between the Pillow outline and the left side of the design.

17 Under the Home icon tap Add Pattern. Select the same pattern. Move and Rotate the design into position on the right side of the rectangle leaving two grid squared between the right side of the design and the right edge of the rectangle.

18 Under the Home icon tap Add Pattern. Locate the Pantos folder and select JMPANTO09 ELEGANT BFLY.qcc. Under the Edit icon tap Move. Drag and use the arrows to move the design into the area to the right of the center design.

19 Under the Edit icon tap Rotate>Select. Tap the CCW box and type in 15; tap OK. The butterfly design is rotated.

20 Repeat the steps of adding the butterfly design two more times, moving and rotating the designs into position as desired to the left side of the center design.

21 Notice the green circle (start) and red X (stop) on each design. The machine will stop stitching after each element, allow the threads to be trimmed, and then the machine will move to the next element to stitch.

22 Now save the layout. Under the Tablet icon tap Save Layout. Type in a name for the file and tap OK. The layout is now saved for future use.

23 Double check the layout one more time. Tap the green button to Trace through the design without stitching. Now it is time to stitch the design. Tap OK and the machine will move into position to sew the Pillow rectangle outline. Pull up the bobbin thread, set the stitch length and the machine speed and tap OK to start the machine stitching the outline.

24 After the rectangle stitches the machine will stop and allow the threads to be cut. Note: I left the threads long and pulled them to the underside after all the stitching was done. Cut the threads, tap OK, and the machine will move to stitch the next design. After the machine stops in position to begin stitching the next design, tap OK. The machine will stitch the middle design. The designs stitch in the order they are brought in on the display screen. After the design stitches the machine will again stop to allow trimming of the threads.

25 Continue following the display instructions and repeating the steps for stitching the remaining designs.

26 After the stitching on the linen fabric has finished, roll the fabric to allow placement of the floral fabric for the pillow back. Cut the floral fabric 36 wide and 18 high. Baste the fabric to the backing and batting. Select the Pillow design and size it like was done for the pillow front. Under the Flowers folder select the open_meander.qcc pattern. Move the pattern into the upper left hand corner of the rectangle.

27 Under the Edit icon tap Autofill. Tap Yes to keep the proportions. The rectangle area is filled with the pattern. Under the Edit icon select Scale. Use the slider bars to fit the meander pattern to the rectangle. Move the filled pattern into position within the area.

28 Save the pillow back file as a new layout. Stitch the pattern. Follow the prompts on the display screen to stitch the meander pattern for the pillow back fabric.

29 Remove the fabrics from the frame. Trim both fabrics close to the outer most stitching line. Test the preferred coloring method on the scraps of fabric. Decide on the method for coloring the butterflies. Fabric crayons are probably the easiest to begin testing this technique. Place a smooth stiff board underneath the fabric and begin by coloring lightly. Add more color by coloring over the area again. Test different colors and blending of colors. Follow the manufacturer s directions for heat setting the color. Note: if pressing on the stitched fabric, pressing will flatten the batting.

30 Follow the manufacturer s directions for using bottles of acrylic paint or paint sticks. Be sure to test for bleeding of colors with the fabric. For this project I experimented and found I could dip the brush in textile medium, swipe it over the paint sticks, then paint on the fabric. I let the paint dry overnight then stuck it in the dryer for 20 minutes to heat set it without flattening the batting.

31 To make the ruffle, cut lengths of the floral fabric 3 wide and form a single length to make 100 by sewing the ends together. Fold the length in half and press. Baste the cut edges together. Gather or use a ruffling attachment to gather the fabric.

32 Place and pin the cut edge of the ruffle along the outer edge of the pillow top. Form the ruffle around the corner allowing more ruffle into each corner. Overlap the ends of the ruffle as shown.

33 Baste the ruffle in place removing the pins as you sew. With right sides together pin the pillow back over the pillow top. Sew the two pieces together using a ¼ seam and leaving an opening at the bottom for turning. Stitch over the firsts stitching again to reinforce the seams. Clip the corners and turn the pillow right side out through the opening. Insert the pillow form (or stuff the pillow with poly-fil) and hand sew the opening closed.

34 Congratulations on creating a Pretty Linen Pillow. Use this technique of stitching designs and coloring or painting elements of the quilting using other designs on the QM! There are many great seasonal designs that would work well.
