1 A trainer s guide to the GIS session What is this guide? This guide is a support document for the trainers of the DATIM session on GIS. This session follows the standard DATIM training approach with 1) a live demo session where the trainer demonstrate and explain the features in DATIM, and 2) a hands on session with exercises where participants get to practice the same features. This guide will help the trainer prepare for the live demo session.the Live Demo step by step with guidance section has a detailed walkthrough of all the steps to demonstrate with explanations and screenshots that should be easy to follow. Use that when preparing for the live demo session. There is also a Quick Guide which lists the steps very briefly and this is meant as a lookup guide or cheatsheet WHILE doing the demo, to help the trainer remember all the steps and the flow of the demo. Understand how to create GIS favourites and use these in Dashboards Time needed for this session Live demo: 30 minutes Hands on exercises: 45mins Background on this topic/module The GIS app allows you do thematic mapping of areas and points, view facilities based on classifications, and visualize catchment areas for each facility. You can define custom legend sets and link them to indicators. GIS a great tool to understand the geographical distribution of data. The GIS tool integrates seamlessly with the Data Visualiser and GIS tools. You can at any time choose to visualise your map as a chart or table, and switch back to map view again.

2 Best practices, tips & tricks 1. Try not to put many overlapping layers on a map that will be difficult to interpret 2. Use different color schemes when displaying multiple layers on a map 3. The ordering of the layers is 1: Top Most Layer 4: Bottom Most Layer. Add thematic layers to the map with this in mind. 4. Keep in mind that most people perceive the color red as Bad and the color green as Good. If you are using Red to Green color schemes, be sure you keep in mind whether low values or high values are bad or good and adapt the legend color scheme as needed to convey the correct message. Preparations Go through the Live demo step by step a few times before doing the actual demo for participants. Make sure your user account is same or similar to the participants training accounts so that you don t show more features, dimension options or data than what they can see when doing the exercises. Also if you are in different user groups you will be showing results from the participants since data access depends on ones user group. It s a good idea to open (and then close) all maps in this demo right before the demo so that they are all cached in your browser. That will make the demo much faster. So do not clear browser cache just before this demo, then the system will have to load all this again. Introduction to GIS. It can be useful to start with a brief introduction to GIS to provide some context to what GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is. GIS is a very big topic, but try and keep things focused to what DHIS2 can do, and what the DHIS2 GIS client is intended for, namely the production of relatively simple thematic maps for analysis. For the purposes of DHIS2, you should limit your introduction to Thematic Mapping. It may be useful to familiarize yourself with some of the concepts prior to your demo. WikiPedia has a good article on thematic mapping ( ). All maps in the DHIS2 GIS module are choropleth or proportional symbols when they are linked with data. Basically, choropleth maps display geographical data (such as district boundaries) as colored polygons based on the data value for that particular area. Proportional symbol maps display coordinates of sites with symbols (circles in DHIS2) whose size depends on the value which corresponds to that particular site. Sites with larger values would typically have a larger circle, while sites with a small value would have a small circle. It is also possible to combine proportional symbols with differing colors. The DHIS2 GIS app supports multiple layers. You can think of a GIS layer as a particular type of data. Layers can be stacked on top of each other to be combined into a single visual analysis. A satellite image (think Google Maps) can be used as a layer, often the base layer, upon which you add additional layers (such as site locations) on top of. Layers

3 can also have transparency which determines the degree to which the layers blend into each other visually. The following diagram may help users to understand how layers are used in GIS a bit better. Quick Guide - overview of steps for the live demo Demo login: Use one of the demo_analysis_nn accounts, same as the ones provided to the participants. 1. Briefly introduce the GIS app interface 2. Make a map showing TX_NEW (N,DSD) by site with District Layers as the boundary a. Add boundary layer for district b. Save and add to dashboard

4 3. Make a map with 2 data layers, HTC_TST (N,DSD) for district and HTC Positive Results at Site Level. Makes sure the classes/method for legend show all the data/units. a. Save as favourite and add to map 4. Move between a pivot table and GIS map a. Open from a table with site level data (easier since there is no selection needed) b. 6 Step 2b - Add the data element TX_NEW to Thematic Layer 1 by Site for FY14 *Note the difference in dimension selection and describe this to the participants. Where there were previously tabs for each individual selection, some of the dimensions are combined together and selected at the same time. Select the type of value you wish to display (Indicator, Data element, or Reporting rates). 7 Select the Legend tab, and explain what the options in the legend mean Legend Type: Automatic (determined by DHIS2) or Predefined (determined by the user; this feature will be demoed as well) Classes/method: The number of categories the data will be grouped into/the method in which they will be separated into categories (equal counts: the data will be spread so each category has the same number of data values in each category; equal intervals: the data is separated such that the values are contained within equal intervals) Low color/size : The color of values towards the lower end of the data scale/the relative size of these values High color/size : The color of values towards the top end of the data scale/the relative size of these values DHIS2 creates an automatic color scale between these two colors and applies them to the data categorizations that the user has selected Click <Update> to see the following map:

10 Select the legend tab and alter the colours so they are different from the site level data that has been selected (click on the color in the low or high color selection to bring up a color palette; from here you can select from the combination of colors available)

12 Part 4 - Move between a pivot table and GIS map Step 4a - Click on Table -> Go to pivot tables Step 4b - Select a pivot table favorite with site level data and move to maps An example that can be used is Demoland HTC Positives by Site FY14 In the interface, click on Maps > Open this table as map You should see the following map

13 Step 4c - Add the district boundary layer for this map Step 4d - Add the District Labels Click on the Options Tab and select Show labels. Set the font size to 14. Click <Update> to see the following map
