2 Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8500 (HP8500) Remanufacturing Instructions Cartridge Reference System Support Series 299 About the Printer Released in October 1998, the Hewlett- Packard Color LaserJet 8500 was positioned as a high-performance, high-volume printer targeted at the corporate department. The 8500 offered a number of additional features not found on the HP4500, which was released the same month. Additional features included faster print speeds, a hard disk drive support, 11" x 17" paper size capability, and more robust paper input and output capabilities. At the time of its introduction, the Canon engine in the 8500 was one of the fastest on the market with a color print speed of 6 ppm and a monochrome speed of 24 ppm. In April 2000, Hewlett-Packard introduced the 8550 as an upgrade model featuring a faster processor and a suggested list price reduction of approximately $2000. The 8550 product line is comprised of the base-level 8550 model, two enhanced versions, the 8550 DN and GN, and an 8550 MFD version featuring a scanner to provide digital copier functionality. The 8500 and 8550 feature chemically-manufactured color toners, an oil-less fuser design, and a rotating carousel color cartridge mechanism. Both the 8500/8550 use a conventionallymanufactured magnetic, monocomponent black toner. Although very similar in many ways to the HP4500, the 8500 and 8550 use a transfer drum rather than an intermediate transfer belt. The supplies set for the HP8500 and 8550 consists of seven consumables: four toner cartridges, an image drum, a transfer drum, and a fuser assembly. 3 Use of Compressed Air As of April 28, 1971, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Standard, 29 CFR paragraphs a & b for general industry requires effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment (PPE) when using compressed air. When cleaning residual toner particles from cartridges using a compressed air system, you must use air nozzles meeting OSHA requirements. Air nozzles that regulate air pressure to a maximum of 30 psi comply with this standard. Refer to the OSHA publication for any updates or changes that have occurred since the date noted above. Use of Isopropyl Alcohol For best results, we recommend using ONLY 91-99% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning as directed in these instructions. 91% Isopropyl alcohol is available at most major drug stores; 99% Isopropyl alcohol is available through distributors of chemical products. Follow the alcohol manufacturer's safety instructions.
