1.0 Summary 1.1 3M No Polish SC/APC Angle Splice Connector Jacket enables fast, on-site installation of 1.6 mm to 3.0 mm kink resistant cable* and 2 mm by 3 mm FRP cable with G.657 bend insensitive fiber. The SC/APC compatible connector consists of a factorypolished ferrule assembly and a mechanical splice. A twist-on, hard shell boot clamps onto the cable jacket and aramid fiber to provide excellent strain relief. For excellent return loss of > 60dB across temperature extremes, the connector is assembled using a simple assembly tool and the 3M Fiber Optic Angle Cleaver 2535 to create a keyed, angle cleave splice. *Using G.657 bend insensitive fiber and a thick wall jacket that is filled with aramid fiber, kink resistant cable can be bent at a 90 degree angle across a sharp corner without excessive insertion loss. 3M No Polish SC/APC Angle Splice Connector Jacket 8802-T/APC/AS/1.6-3 Fiber Sheath 2.0 ± 0.2 mm Strength member 3.0 ± 0.2 mm FRP Cable Required tools, which are available in the 3M Fiber Optic Angle Cleave Kit The 3M No Polish Connector Assembly Tool Jacket JT which comes in every box of sixty 8802-T/APC/ AS/1.6-3 connectors is also required. 1. 3M Fiber Stripper 6362-TH 2. 3M Snips 6365-KS 3. 3M Lint Free Cloths 4. Alcohol bottle 5. 3M Fiber Optic Angle Cleaver Fiber shard container 7. Cleaver brush 8. Tweezers 9. Work plate 10. Carrying case 3

1.2 For situations where a suitable work area is not available, the case and plastic plate, can create a work surface. The case can be set on level ground, on a vehicle, or hung by the hook and shoulder strap. 1.3 Add one full bottle (1.8 fl. Oz./ 53 ml) of 99% pure isopropyl alcohol into lint free container to pre-moisten wipes. Note: Carefully follow safety, health and environmental information given on product label or the Material Safety Data Sheet for the isopropyl alcohol. 2.0 Cable and Fiber Preparation 2.1 Open all three angle cleaver clamps and levers Carefully clean the cleaver clamps using a small brush. 2.3 Carefully remove the hard shell boot from the bag and slide it onto the cable with the boot s threaded opening nearest the cable end. If using 1.6 or 2.0 mm cable, remove the flexible spacer tube from the bag and slide it over the cable. 4

2.4 Remove 65 mm (2.6 inches) of cable jacket using the fiber stripper. The edge of the assembly tool can be used as a guide for the appropriate length. 2.5 For 3 mm cable, insert the cable into the assembly tool so the jacket end is at the line closest to the cable clamp and the boot fits in the tool as shown. Secure the cable by pressing the plastic wedge onto the cable. Pull aramid fiber away from the 900 µm buffer. 2.6 For 1.6 and 2.0 mm cable, follow the instructions in step 2.5 with the flexible spacer tube positioned so it is clamped by the plastic wedge. 2.7 For 2 mm x 3 mm FRP cable, lay the cable with 2 mm side down in the assembly tool, align jacket with mark near the end of the assembly tool, and secure with the plastic wedge. 65mm 3 mm Jacket Edge Flexible Spacer Tube FRP Jacket Edge 5

2.8 Strip the 900 µm and 250 µm leaving 26 mm +/-1 mm of buffer extending from jacket. 26 mm strip length is achieved as fiber strip tool contacts end of tool as shown in photo. 26 mm 26mm 2.9 Pull plastic wedge to release cable and slide the cable so the jacket end is aligned with the mark near the end of the assembly tool. Secure cable again with the wedge. For 1.6 and 2.0 mm cable, ensure the flexible spacer tube is clamped. Jacket Edge Aramid Yarn Under Tool 2.10 Clean fiber with alcohol and lint free cloth. Note: Carefully follow safety, health and environmental information given on product label or the Material Safety Data Sheet for the isopropyl alcohol. 6

2.11 Place the assembly tool onto the cleaver. Push the tool toward the cleaver blade until it stops Place fiber in angle cleaver so that the coating edge is at 8 +/- 0.5 mm. Note: Make sure that the natural bow in the fiber is facing down and laying properly in the bottom of the V-groove in both cleaver clamps 1 & 2. The clamp may be slightly loosened to allow the fiber to be twisted until natural bow is pointed down. Coating edge at 8.0 mm 2.13 Close the cleaver clamp #1 first. This sets the appropriate cleave length Close the cleaver clamp #2. Note: Fiber in clamp 2 should be well centered in V-groove before closing clamp 2. Ensure there is no fiber bow between the two clamps. If there is a bow, open both clamps and repeat steps 2.13 and

2.15 Depress cleave activation lever (#3) and hold it down until Clamp #2 slide assembly has fully moved to the right, indicating the angle cleave is complete. Note: If fiber does not break immediately upon activation, or it breaks so that the cleave length is not 8 mm, then open clamps and carefully clean the cleaver clamps with a wooden toothpick, brush and alcoholsoaked lint-free cloth. Cut exposed fiber and repeat from step 2.4. If issues persist, rotate cleaver blade to the next position using the supplied wrenches and try again Open cleaver clamp #1 and remove the assembly tool and fiber from cleaver. Note: Do not open activation lever after cleaving until assembly tool and fiber have been removed Open activation lever #3 and clamp #2 of angle cleaver. Dispose of fiber shard per company practice. 3.0 Fiber Insertion 3.1 Ensure the aramid yarn is pulled away from the optical fiber and VERY SLOWLY insert the optical fiber into the connector body, so the connector s two protruding arms mate with the assembly tool base. The nest in the tool s base ensures rotational alignment of the angle cleaved fiber to the angle cleaved fiber stub in the connector. Note: If the exposed glass fiber is contacted, it can be contaminated. If this occurs, the fiber needs to be prepared again with another strip, clean and cleave as shown in section 2. 8

3.2 A bow in the buffer should start to form as the jacket enters the two protruding arms. The bow confirms contact of cleaved fiber and fiber stub inside connector. If a bow is not seen or a bow is created before the jacket reaches the connector body, strip, clean, and cleave the fiber as shown in section 2 and try installation again. 3.3 If the fiber is installed correctly, the bow should reach the top of the connector as shown in the picture. In some cases, the fiber may bow down, which is acceptable. 4.0 Splice Actuation 4.1 While maintaining the fiber bow, press the center of the actuation cap by hand until it is fully depressed. 5.0 Boot Installation 5.1 Release plastic wedge and slide cable back to release the fiber bow. Note: Do not strongly pull on the fiber or cable. 9

5.2 Separate the cable from the assembly tool. 5.3 Make sure the fiber is not bowed. If using 1.6 or 2.0 mm cable, slide the spacer tube up to the stop on the connector body. Slide boot until it meets the connector body as shown. 5.4 Hold aramid yarn straight in bundle on underside of connector as shown in photo. Lightly pull jacketed cable ensuring bow is fully removed. Aramid yarn should be straight but not tensioned. While advancing boot to thread, observe that buffer does not bow. Twist boot two full rotations to partially anchor aramid yarn. 5.5 Twist aramid yarn to boot and allow some slack as shown. 5.6 While observing buffer through window, twist boot final two turns. Buffer should not show any bow through window. Fully tighten boot for maximum pull strength. 10

5.7 Trim excess aramid yarn as show in photo. 5.8 Per photo, slide shell over connector body so the hole in shell matches the actuation cap on top of the connector. A click should be heard when complete. Note: Straight ribs towards boot. 5.9 If connector is to be installed, remove dust cap and clean connector per company practice. Note: Carefully follow safety, health and environmental information given on product label or the Material Safety Data Sheet for the isopropyl alcohol. 6.0 Connector Re-termination 6.1 Insert the cap-lifter into the bottom of the connector. 11

6.2 Push cap-lifter until it is fully inserted into the connector. Note: Connector shell position may need to be adjusted so the cap-lifter prongs can mate with slots inside the connector body. 6.3 Unscrew the boot from the connector body and remove fiber from the connector body. 6.4 Repeat steps 2.4 through 2.15 and section While maintaining the fiber bow, press the actuation cap using the side of the caplifter until the cap is fully depressed, as shown in Repeat section 5. 3M is a trademark of 3M Company.
