WARNING Winchester Industrial Equipment and Loads must be properly stored, handled and maintained for safe and proper function. Mishandling or failure to properly store, handle or maintain the Ringblaster or Western Tools may lead to Tool failure or Load misfire, resulting in serious injury or death to operator or bystanders. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the storage, handling, maintenance or proper function of any Winchester Industrial Tools, please consult this maintenance CD or contact your Winchester Industrial Equipment representative. The contents and information presented in this Winchester Industrial Equipment Training & Maintenance Manual CD are the property of Olin Corporation. Ringblaster Mark IV - Introduction This maintenance guide will show you how to disassemble every working part of the Ringblaster Mark IV Industrial Tool. If this system has been leased to you, any factory authorized parts requiring replacement due to normal use and wear will be shipped to you at no charge. You pay shipping charges only. If you find it necessary to replace any parts, order by number, and write, call or fax: Winchester/Olin Corporation Attn: Industrial Customer Service 427 North Shamrock Street East Alton, Illinois Tel: (618) Fax: (618) Because of the extremely adverse conditions under which this equipment must operate, special care should be taken in maintaining it. 1. Always cover the equipment when not in use. 2. All moving parts inside the receiver and Breech block should be cleaned periodically with a non-petroleum solvent to remove dirt. We recommend a silicon lubricant. Do not oil any exterior parts since oil will attract dirt. 3. After each shooting, the shell chamber should be cleaned using non-petroleum based solvent and Chamber Cleaning Brush #R003. The Chamber Cleaning Brush is provided with every Mark IV. The #R003 Chamber Cleaning Brush can be ordered separately or is provided in the #R499A Cleaning Kit. *NOTE: Portable shooting stands are not furnished by Winchester. Customer may obtain technical drawings by ordering form E-3-5/86. 2
Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 1 Loosen recoil hex nuts (W10067). Remove the wing nuts (W12027) from one side of spring guard (W12026). Swing spring guard (W12026) away from barrel assembly. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 2 Unlock and remove the breech safety lock. Disconnect lanyard assembly (W10071) by removing the connecting link (W10020). Slide the tool out of the mount. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 3 Rotate the breech pin retainers (W10044) on both sides of the receiver (W10001) by removing the top screws (W10044) and loosening the bottom screws (W10044). Then swing the breech pin retainers (W10044) to the rear of the receiver (W10001) so they hang below the breech block pin (W10009). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 4 Remove deflector (W10062) by removing screws (W10063) and washers (W10036). 3
Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 5 Disconnect the breech block (W10003) from the breech block pin (W10009) by loosening the set screw (W10010) in the breech block (W10003). The set screw (W10010) only requires about two full turns to allow the breech block pin (W10009) to be driven out. Drive out the breech block pin (W10009). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 6 Rotate the camming link (W10059) up and down. The breech block (W10003) will move to a position where it can be removed from the receiver (W10001). Remove the breech block (W10003). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 7 In order to clean the firing pin hole in the breech block (W10003), the firing pin sear (W10006) and the trigger (W10022) must be removed. Loosen and remove the sear set screw (W10011) and the sear spring (W10008). When reinstalling the sear set screw (W10011), tighten until the sear set screw (W10011) is flush with the surface of the breech block (W10003). If it is screwed in too far it will bind the firing pin. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 8 Drive the trigger pin (W10024) out of the breech block (W10003). Remove the trigger (W10022) from the breech block (W10003). 4
Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 9 Remove the firing pin assembly [firing pin spring (W10007), firing pin (W10004) and sleeve (W10005)] from the breech block (W10003). Start by placing the breech block (W10003) into the receiver (W10001). Use a punch to drive out the roll pin (W10012). IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: Before removing the punch after driving out the roll pin (W10012), cover the firing pin hole with your hand or with a shop towel in the palm of your hand. There is enough pressure from the firing pin spring (W10007) on the sleeve (W10005) to cause the sleeve (W10005) to fly out of the firing pin hole. Remove the punch after confirming the firing pin hole is covered. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 10 After the punch has been removed from the breech block (W10003), remove the sleeve (W10005), remove the firing pin spring (W10007) and remove the firing pin (W10004). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 11 To clean the powder out of the firing pin hole in the breech block (W10003) use a 13/32 drill bit with a ground off tip. Before using the drill bit, spray the firing pin hole with a quickly evaporating spray solvent such as an electrical cleaner. Never use petroleum based spray oils to clean the equipment or mount. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 12 Turning one direction only, with the flutes, insert the drill bit into the firing pin hole and scrape the bottom of the hole until clean. While continuing to rotate, slowly remove the drill bit. Then flush the firing pin hole again with the quickly evaporating spray solvent. Set the breech block (W10003) aside. 5
Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 13 Rotate the barrel and receiver 180 degrees in the mount. Remove the breech block stop bracket (W10033) by loosening and removing four screws (W10037) and lock washers (W10036) and (W10034). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 14 Using a punch, drive out the pin (W10053) holding the extractor release cam assembly. CAUTION: DO NOT remove the punch until reviewing step 15. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 15 IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: Before removing the punch after driving out the pin (W10053), cover the extractor release cam assembly with your hand. There is enough pressure from the spring (W10050) on the plunger plug (W10052) to cause the plunger plug (W10052) to fly out of the hole. Remove the punch after confirming the extractor release cam assembly is covered. Then remove the plunger plug (W10052), remove the extractor release cam plunger (W10051) and remove the spring (W10050) from the extractor release cam plunger (W10051). Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 16 Remove the warning labels (W10079) from both sides of the receiver. Note: If pressure sensitive labels were applied, do not reuse them. Order new warning labels from Winchester (W10079). To remove the block pin (W10054) from the receiver, loosen and remove set screw (W10055) from the bottom of the tool. Then using a punch, drive out the block pin (W10054). Leave the punch in until the next step. Note: When reinstalling block pin, make sure the flat area of the block pin is aligned with the set screw (W10055). 6
Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 17 Before removing the extractor (W10025) place your thumb on the extractor to keep parts from flying out. With your thumb on the extractor, remove the punch. Then remove the extractor (W10025), remove the extractor release cam (W10025), remove two extractor pins (W10027) and two extractor springs (W10028). The extractor pins and springs are identical. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 18 To remove the extractor release (W10029), loosen the extractor release screw (W10056) which is found underneath the label. With your thumb put pressure on the extractor release (W10029) and pull the extractor release screw (W10056) out. Then remove the extractor release (W10029), extractor pin (W10027) and extractor spring (W10028). These are identical to the parts removed in step 17. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 19 In order to remove the cocking cam (W10013) the shaft pin (W10016) must first be driven out by a punch. Using a hammer, drive the shaft (W10015) out of the receiver toward the camming link (W10059). Be careful when removing the shaft (W10015) so as not to lose the cocking cam plunger (W10049) and spring (W10050). Remove the shaft, cocking cam, cocking cam plunger and spring. Ringblaster Mark IV Disassembly Step 20 If the extractor release (W10029) and the cocking cam (W10013) must be replaced, they must be ordered per a measurement. For the cocking cam (W10013), measure the distance from the center of the hole to the top of the pawls. The measurement for the extractor release (W10029) should be from the center of the hole to the top of the extractor release. 7
Ringblaster Mark IV Cleaning Procedures Step 1 Clean the chamber of the tool by inserting the chamber cleaning brush (R003) into the chamber. Put the handle of the brush through the bore siting hole first, then attach a drill to the handle section of the brush. Spray the brush with a non-petroleum solvent such as electric motor and contact cleaner. Do not use an oil-based solvent since oil will attract dirt. Scrub the chamber with the brush for 4-5 minutes to remove the burnt carbons. Ringblaster Mark IV Cleaning Procedures Step 2 The bushing holes may also be cleaned with the chamber cleaning brush. Ringblaster Mark IV Cleaning Procedures Step 3 The tool and all parts should be cleaned with a nonpetroleum solvent and a brush to remove dirt, oil and grease. Proper and complete cleaning is essential prior to reassembly. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 1 Insert extractor spring (W10028) and extractor pin (W10027) into the receiver (W10001). Place the extractor release (W10029) in position with the hole facing the end of the barrel and toward the top side of the receiver (W10001). While holding the extractor release (W10029) in position, insert the extractor release screw (W10056) through the hole in the extractor release (W10029). Use a screwdriver to tighten the extractor release screw (W10056). 8
Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 2 Continue assembling the extractor mechanism components by inserting two extractor springs (W10028) and two extractor pins (W10027). The extractor (W10025) and extractor release cam (W10031) are held in place under pressure by the block pin (W10054). Place the extractor release cam (W10031) in position and insert the block pin (W10054) just far enough to hold the release cam. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 3 With the extractor release cam (W10031) being held by the block pin (W10054), insert the extractor (W10025) into the slot of the extractor release cam (W10031) and press the block pin (W10054) through the hole in the extractor (W10025) and the hole on the other side of the extractor release cam (W10031). Pressure must be applied to the extractor (W10025) to align the holes. Make sure the flat part of the block pin (W10054) is aligned with the set screw hole and install set screw (W10055) to hold the block pin (W10054) in place. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 4 Insert the extractor release cam plunger (W10051) into the hole next to the extractor mechanism components just installed. Insert the spring (W10050) into the extractor release cam plunger (W10051). Place the plunger plug (W10052) on top of the spring (W10050). Press the plunger plug (W10052) down flush with the extractor release cam plunger (W10051) and insert a punch into the hole on the side of the receiver (W10001). Make a note as to where the plunger plug (W10052) is in relationship to the extractor release cam plunger (W10051). This will allow for proper alignment when reinstalling the pin (W10053). Remove the punch. If the pin is not installed correctly it will cause the plunger mechanism to seize. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 5 After removing the punch, insert the pin (W10053) into the hole in the side of the receiver (W10001). Press the plunger plug down the same distance as it was held by the punch in the previous step and drive the pin (W10053) into the hole with a hammer. Be sure the pin hole is aligned. A burr on the pin can cause the plunger mechanism to seize. 9
Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 6 Place the breech block stop bracket (W10033) on the receiver (W10001) making sure the four holes are aligned with the holes on the receiver. Install four screws (W10037) and lock washers (W10036) and (W10034). Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 7 To reinstall the cocking cam assembly drop the spring (W10050) into the hole in the cocking cam bushing. Place the cocking cam plunger (W10049) on top of the spring aligning it with the hole. Depress the cocking cam plunger with a punch. When inserting the shaft (W10015) make sure the corners of the shaft are aligned up and down. While holding the cocking cam plunger (W10049) down with the punch, insert the shaft (W10015) through the first cocking cam bushing. The corner of the shaft should hold the cocking cam plunger down while inserting the shaft (W10015). Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 8 Align the cocking cam (W10013) into the receiver (W10001) so the cocking pawl points toward the back of the receiver (W10001). Press the shaft (W10015) through the hole in the cocking cam (W10013) and into the opposite side cocking cam bushing. Rotate the shaft to align the holes for the shaft pin (W10016). Using a hammer, drive in the shaft pin (W10016) locking the shaft (W10015) to the cocking cam (W10013). The cocking cam assembly should rotate freely. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 9 Rotate the tool right side up. Begin the breech block reassembly by inserting the sear (W10006) into the hole in the breech block (W10003) with the notch in the sear (W10006) facing the slot in the breech block (W10003). Insert the trigger (W10022) into the slot of the breech block (W10003) making sure the sear (W10006) rises and falls as the trigger (W10022) is rotated. Using a hammer, drive the trigger pin (W10024) into the breech block (W10003) securing the trigger. Insert the sear spring (W10008) into the same hole as the sear (W10006) and tighten the set screw (W10011) flush with the surface of the breech block (W10003). The trigger mechanism will not function correctly if the set screw (W10011) is overtightened. If the set screw (W10011) is loose when reaching the flush position with the breech block (W10003) use a center punch and stake the set screw (W10011). 10
Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 10 Lay the breech block assembly on the receiver (W10001). Insert the firing pin (W10004) into the breech block assembly with the slot in the firing pin (W10004) facing the barrel. Insert the firing pin spring (W10007) and the sleeve (W10005). The slot in the sleeve (W10005) must be aligned with the slot in the firing pin (W10004). Compress the firing pin spring (W10007) by pressing on the sleeve (W10005) and insert a punch through a hole in the side of the breech block (W10003), holding the compressed firing pin spring (W10007) and sleeve (W10005). Using a hammer, drive the roll pin (W10012) into the hole opposite the punch, driving the punch out with the roll pin (W10012). While driving the roll pin (W10012) though the hole and punch out, cover the firing pin hole to prevent the firing pin and sleeve from accidentally flying out. Countersink the roll pin (W10012) to avoid it dragging on the sides of the receiver (W10001). Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 11 Place the breech block assembly into the receiver (W10001). Insert the breech block pin (W10009) through the holes in the receiver (W10001) and the breech block (W10003). Align the breech block pin (W10009) flush with the receiver (W10001). Attach the breech pin retainers (W10044) on both sides of the receiver (W10001) using the button head screws (W10044). Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 12 Put the breech block assembly in the down position to provide an alignment surface for the deflector (W10062). Attach the deflector (W10062) to the receiver (W10001) with two socket head screws (W10037) and lock washers (W10036). Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 13 Use the connecting link (W10020) to attach the lanyard assembly (W10071) to the roller chain link (R802). 11
Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 14 Before sliding the tool into the mount, place the lanyard assembly (W10071) through the mount. When sliding the tool into the mount, make sure the slot in the camming link (W10059) aligns with the pin on the cocking link (W12020). To help in alignment, close the breech and push the handle assembly forward. Slide the tool into the mount. Ringblaster Mark IV Reassembly Step 15 Secure the tool to the mount by tightening the recoil hex nut (W10067) against the recoil spring (W10068). Tighten the recoil hex nut (W10067) to the end of the threads. Tighten the other recoil hex nut (W10067) against the barrel nut lock washer (W10067) and the first recoil hex nut. Close the spring guard (W12026) and attach it with two hex head cap screws (W12027). The tool is now ready for firing. Ringblaster Mark IV Maintenance Indicators - Misfires If an operator has to pull the ejection handle more than once to make a shell eject then dirt is building up inside the chamber. Attach the chamber cleaning brush (R003) to a drill. Spray a non-petroleum solvent (such as electric contact cleaner) on the brush and in the chamber. Run the brush in the chamber for 4-5 minutes to clean. If cleaning the chamber with the cleaning brush does not solve the ejection problem, or if a shell ejects after a hesitation, then the tool should be completely disassembled, cleaned and reassembled. If misfires begin to occur more frequently, the breech block assembly should be removed and the firing pin (W10004) cleaned. Ringblaster Mark IV Maintenance Indicators #2 If the tool should ever go off when moving the handle assembly (W12078) without pulling the lanyard assembly (W10071), the sear (W10006) in the breech block (W10003) is worn or the edge of the firing pin (W10004) is worn. The sear (W10006) and the firing pin (W10004) should be replaced with new parts. 12
