First of all, the cheap glass which was obtained as blanks, mainly from '.;:allaceburg. This glass came clear and colored - the colors pink and blue predominating and it was on this type the young workers, usually girls, were trained. The Strawberry, Grape or Daisy patterns were engraved on tumblers, creams and sugars, pitchers and a variety of tablewares for everyday use and with the biggest buyer for this output being Woolworths. T05 co The second type of cut glass arrived at the factory,not as blank--but with the pattern already pressed into it. The glass cutter took this piece of glass, cut into the pressed pat' tern and, perhaps, added an engraved flower. * The third type was what everyone considers real cut glass to be The blanks arrived from the Baccarat Glass Company of France, Val St. Lambert Glass Company of Belgium or Libbey Glass Company of Ohio. The cutter traced his pattern on with fine cutting wheel and then began his heavy cutting. The cutting room had, perhaps, six cutters who faced each other across wooden frames. They sat at their work with their cutting wheels waist-level high. A hopper was situated above them and water came from the hopper down d wooden funnel onto each cutting wheel or stone. Different sized stones were used to make different sized cuts. In Deseronto, the main cutters did all the cuts and then sent the piece down to the "wash rooms". Due to the cutting, a piece had a whitish appearance and this was removed in a sulphuric acid bath. The women in the "wash rooms" first took the piece and coated the inside with wax - only the cut portion came into contact with the acid, with the result that it now had become a beautiful, gleaming cut glass creation. From here, the glass was sent down to the shipping room. A lady who had once worked in this department spoke with Diane and said that the blanks arrived in barrels filled with sawdust and, for economy's sake, the finished product was shipped out in these same containers. We own a bowl which, according to a picture from a Clapperton catalogue, is called PRINCESS, as shown at Right. The. mite-up dated May 1st, 1913 which Gerald Stevens found in the Clapperton papers, mentioned previously, states the firm was especially known for its Intaglio work during Gundy, Clapperton days. Intaglio is the opposite of Cameo work since it is cut or hollowed out from the surface while Cameo is raised above, or cut in relief. GunrAy, Clapperton was the only firm in Canada doing this work in 1913, having introduced it to the country. Lavateure told of doing a pedestal vase for an exhibition - apparently, a ver7 beautiful piece, made in three or four sections, heavy cut with tiny butt.: -.,rzlies on it. ;.(:,.Ye of Clapperton's pieces were marked.
