3 1 Introduction This model Digital Micro Vickers Hardness Tester is a new and high-tech product combining the optical, mechanical and electronic techniques, with a novel appearance, a good reliability, operational functions and direct-viewing, and hence it is a newly type hardness measurement instrument for micro Vickers and Knoop, which is adopted precise mechanical technique and optical-electronic technique. The instrument is adopted such technology as computer making programs with software, high amplification optical measuring system and photoelectric sensor. Inputting by soft keys, the tester has such function as adjusting the intensity of testing light source, selecting the testing method and hardness exchanges, file number and storage, etc. And all testing data such as the testing method, the testing force value, the testing indentation length, the hardness value, the dwell time of testing load, numbers of measurement can be showed on its large LCD screen, besides it can be inputted year, month and date by keys, test the result, handle data and output information with print, connect with computer through RS-232 interface. The typical feature of present hardness tester is to test the hardness value reliably and accurately. The errors of hardness values can be revised by pressing input keys; therefore, it enables the hardness values measured more precisely to meet the needs of test requirements. 4 3 Installation and Regulation 3.1 Operational Conditions (1) Room temperature within 23±5 ; (2)Installed in a horizontal position on a solid basement; (3) In an environment without any shock or vibration; (4) In a surrounding without any corroding agent; (5) Relative room humidity inferior to 65%. 3.2 Unpacking and Installation Unpack the outer box, take out the accessories kit and the main hardness tester (Fig.1); Place the hardness tester on the special working table, remove the gauze band wrapped on the main hardness tester; Take out 4 Regulating Screws (2) from the accessories kit, and screw them into the bottom of the main hardness tester. 0.0HV1 HCG DWELL 10S NO -- HRA d1: un d2: un PRT DISP STR DEL SEL CLR LANP 17 + OK - (Fig 1) 4

The Operation Panel Screw off 4 screws on the Upper Cover (10) and remove the Upper Cover (10). (Fig. 2) Unscrew 1 Anti-Shock Screws and 2 screws on the Weight End Case (Fig. 2) Remove off Weight End Cover. Take out Weight Axis and Weights from accessories kit. Put six Weights on the Weight Axis in the order from small to big (Fig 3) Holding the top of the Weight Axis, and put the Weight Axis into the Weight Outer Case and rotate the Weight Axis to enable the peg of Weight Axis may fall into the V-Shaped groove. 5

(Fig. 3) 3.2.8 Align the hole on Weight End Cover and the Weight Axis, enable the Weight End Cover fit for install on the Weight Out Case closely; 3.2.9 Rotate the Load-Change Hand Wheel (18) to let the weight out case to move up and down smoothly in the position groove; then close the Upper Cover (10).

6 (Fig. 3) Align the hole on Weight End Cover and the Weight Axis, enable the Weight End Cover fit for install on the Weight Out Case closely; Rotate the Load-Change Hand Wheel (18) to let the weight out case to move up and down smoothly in the position groove; then close the Upper Cover (10). Screw the Photo Cover (9) tightly Take off the Dust-Protecting Cover, take out the Eyepiece (7) from accessories kit, insert it into the hole showed as Fig.1 and put it to the end. The wire plug of the Eyepiece should insert into the Round Socket (17) at left of the main body Take out the Cross Testing Table (4) from the accessories kit and insert the axis of the Cross Testing Table into the hole of the Up and Down Lead Screw (3), then screw the Fastening Screw (23) tightly Take out the Level (the leveling gauge) from accessories kit and put it on the Cross Testing Table (4), then adjust the Regulating Screw (1) to enable it in level state. 3.3 Introduction to The Operating Board and Its Function Key Turn the Power Switch (12) on, then the main screen light up and show the operating page. 6

Set Zero Key (CLR) --- Set zero to d1 and d2 during measurement. + Key Increase the intensity of light source or add numerical value. - Key Decrease the intensity of light source or subtract numerical value. or Key----Move the cursor Set Zero Key (SET) --- Revise the interface. After press Select Key, the following interface will be shown (Fig. 5): When cursor is at item "MEASURING SCALE", press "OK" Key. The following menu will come (Fig 6) 7

8 MEASURING SCALE HV HK (Fig 6) Press or Key (move cursor) to select the desired requirements. After selection, then press "OK" button to turn to the new interface Press the Select Key, the menu (Fig.5) will display. Move the cursor to the EXCHANGE SCALE item. Press OK Key, the following menu (Fig.7) will show: EXCHANGE SCALE HRA HRB HRC HRD HRF HV HK HBW HR15N HR30N HR45N HR15T HR30T HR45T (Fig 7) Move the cursor to the required hardness exchange scale. Press "OK" Key after selection. Under the word 0.0HV10 on the screen will show the HRA exchange scale. (3)To set dwelling time or modify the date (year, month, date), the operating method is just as above. Press "+" or "-" Key to increase or decrease. (4)Most useful dwelling time is 10S (usually black metal 10S, non-ferrous metals 30S). 3.4 Usage of the instrument Turn on the Power Switch, the screen lights up, then you can select data Rotate the Load-Change Hand Wheel (18) to select the testing force of requirement. The value of testing force on the Load-Change Hand Wheel (18) should be as same as the value of testing force showed on screen. The Load-Change Hand Wheel (18) should be rotated carefully and slowly. When rotating to place for value of Max. Testing force 9.8N (1000gf), at this point, the position is at the end and could not to rotate forward continuously, you should rotate the Load-Change Hand Wheel in opposite direction. As the same principle, when rotating to the place for value of Min. Testing force 0.098N (10gf), you should rotate the Load-Change Hand Wheel in opposite direction as well Press OK Key to confirm the item on screen, which needs to be revised or selected Turn The Rotating Plate (21)to make the 40 Objective (22)turn to the front position, at this time, the general amplification of light path system is 400. Put the standard test block or the specimen on the Cross Test Table (4). Rotate the Up and Down Rotating Wheel (2) to rise up the Cross Test Table. When the specimen comes into the distance of about 1mm under the Indenter, put eye close to the Eyepiece (7) to observe. When a bright spot 8

9 appears to the vision field in Eyepiece (7), it shows the focusing plane will come closely. At this time, raise the Test Table up slowly and slightly until the surface of specimen forms a clear image, which you observe from the Eyepiece (7), at this point, the focusing process is completed. Due to very smooth and clean surface of the test block, it is difficult to find the surface of test block (in Eyepiece) for the initial learner. Turn over the test block to enable its back surface on (the rough surface towards up). After find the surface of test block (in Eyepiece), turn back to the test surface of test block. Two graduate lines are closely without limit,but not overlap each other Graduate Line Measuring Button Left Drum Wheel Right Drum Wheel ( Fig 8) Left Graduate Line Right Graduate Line Left Drum Wheel Right Drum Wheel (Fig 9) If require to observe a larger vision field on specimen, turn the 10 Objective(13) to front position, the general amplification of light path system is 100, and it is at the observation state. Note: When irregular-shaped specimen is to be tested, take more careful to avoid the Indenter is damaged due to the touching between the Indenter and specimen Turn the Indenter (5) to front position carefully and slowly, avoid concussion due to prompt action. At this time, the distance between the tip of Indenter and surface of specimen is about 0.3~0.5mm Press Start Key (STR), at this time, the testing force is applying (motor is started), the screen appears LOADING, which shows the testing force is loading. DWELL means to keep the testing force. It shows 10,9,8 0 seconds, back counting time. UNLOADING means that the testing force 9

10 is unloading. When loading and unloading of testing force is completed, the main screen will back to operating page. Note: When motor is working, it is prohibited to move the specimen or turn the Indenter until the loading and unloading testing force is finished, otherwise the instrument will be damaged Turn the 40 Objective(22) to front position, See the Indentation from the vision field of the Eyepiece (7), according to operator s personal vision, turn the Up and Down Hand Wheel (2) a bit to enable the Cross Testing Table (4) move up and down till the image of the Indentation is clearest. If two graduated lines seem vague in the Eyepiece, adjust the Eye Guard (8) till the graduated lines are clearest, this is according to personal vision Rotate the Right Drum Wheel (19) to move the graduated line of eyepiece, enable two graduated lines closely. When inner side of two graduated lines are closely without limit (the inner side of graduated lines reach critical state with no space between them to allow the light penetrate, but two graduated lines are prohibited to overlap each other), press Set Zero Key (CLR), at this time, the d1 value on the main screen is zero, at the zero position for technique term. Now the length of diagonal line of indentation can be measured in the Eyepiece Rotate the Right Drum Wheel (19) to let graduated lines separate each other, turn the Left Drum Wheel (16) to move the left graduated line until it s inner side tangent to the intersecting point at left outside of the indentation, and then move the right graduated line until it s inner side tangent to the intersecting point at right outside of indention, press the Measuring Button (20) on the Eyepiece. The measurement for d1 length of diagonal line is completed. Turn the Eyepiece (7) by 90 o, according to above mention way to measure the d2 length of diagonal line, press the Measuring Button (20). At this time the screen shows testing display value and exchanged hardness display value measured at present time. If the operator is not sure the correctness of the measurement, repeat measuring again as methods described on above mention sections After first time measurement finish, the first indentation testing is not count to record according to the requirement of the inspection rule, therefore the hardness value of second indentation will be written to first record in testing data, so at this point, the testing number shows NO: 01 on the screen. After several times testing, all testing results have been store in the memory of instrument, mostly 40 records can be stored. If you require check the former testing data, press Display Key (DIP), all data and statistics results will show on the screen. No. D(mm) MIN. AV. MAX. R Press OK Key, the instrument will return to working order If require to print, press Print Key (PRT). 3.5 Regulation of the instrument and the precautions The precision of the hardness displaying value of the hardness tester is just calibrated before the instrument is turned out of the factory. If an error is caused due to the transportation or according to the various requirements of the client, the hardness value may be revised by pressing input keys. The method is as following: Shut off the instrument firstly. Press on the Select Key (SEL or SET), don t loosely, at the same time; open the Power Switch. The main screen will show numerical value, for example: If the hardness value tested is larger, press + Key to increase the numerical value, thus the hardness value will be lowered down. If the numerical value decreases, the hardness value will rise up. Every Pressing, the hardness value will change about 15HV. After revising, press OK Key to enable the instrument return to working state It is necessary to read carefully the usage instruction manual before the operation of the present instrument in order to know the operational procedures and the precautions so as to avoid the damages to the instrument caused by the incorrect operation. 10

11 3.5.2 It is prohibited to dismount and alternate without permission all the electric component parts, the switches and sockets as well as their fixed positions; otherwise the instrument will be error and caused unsafe accidents It is prohibited to rotate the Indenter, unless the testing force has been unloaded, otherwise it would damage the instrument. Only after testing force has been unloaded and the screen turns back to operating page, then the Indenter can be rotated The testing force should not be applied when the present instrument is at measuring state. If the Start Key (STR) is pressed due to careless, the Indenter should not be rotated. Only after testing force has been unloaded, then the Indenter can be rotated The Diamond Indenter 1) The diamond indenter and the indenter shaft are important parts of the instrument, and hence it is necessary to take care not to touch the indenter during the operation. 2) In order to assure the precision of the measurement, it is important to keep the indenter clean. If it is covered with grease or dust, the tip of indenter should be cleaned carefully and lightly with absorbent cotton wetted with a little alcohol (industrial use) or ether The Eyepiece 1) Owing to the difference of the personal visions, the graduated lines observed in the vision field of the eyepiece may seem vague. And accordingly, the observer should turn slightly the Eye Guard (8) on the eyepiece so as to observe the graduated line in the vision field clearly. 2) Note: the Eyepiece should be inserted to the bottom of eyepiece tube and keeping without any space between them, otherwise it would affect the correctness of the measurement. When testing the length of diagonal line of indentation, it is necessary to measuring the tip points of diagonal line, then turn the Eyepiece by 90 o and test other a pair of tip points for diagonal lines The specimen 1) The surface of the specimen must be clean, as the grease or the dirt on the surface would affect the precision of the measurement. Please clear the specimen with alcohol or ether. 2) When filament, thin piece and small bits are used as specimen, the Fine Wire Test Table, Thin Specimen Test Table and Fork-Shaped Test Table should be used to hold the specimen respectively on the Cross Test Table for measurement. If the specimen is too small to be held, the specimen should be mounted and polished for measurement The measurement for Knoop Hardness Exchange the Indenter Loosen the screw fixed on the Indenter (5) with a screwdriver to take the Indenter out, change the Knoop Indenter for replacement. Note the direction when assembling. The red point of the indenter should be in face to front direction, the long diagonal line of indentation (the shape of indention is a long rhombus) should be in parallel with testing table. It may be to regulate the center of indentation in vision field after install Knoop Indenter Testing hardness value The hardness testing method of Knoop is mainly same as that of Vickers, besides it is only required to measure the length of long diagonal line for indentation. Press the Measuring Button to confirm, then the HK hardness value will display on the screen. 11

12 4 Reference Experiences When testing the Vickers hardness value, you d better to select the test force as larger as possible if the condition of specimen allows, thus the test result will be relative accurate. Normally, the harder materials are used with larger test force and the softer materials are used with smaller test force, According to our habit, it will be easiest to measure if the length of diagonal line of indentation is about 50um, but the thickness of the specimen should be considered. Reference: The thickness of materials 1.5 length of diagonal line of indentation For Example: Thickness of materials =0.1mm, thus the length of diagonal line of indentation should not larger than 0.066mm. 13 6 Special Accessories Special accessories shall be produced according to user s requirement, the technical problem shall be solved under assistant of our company and their prices shall be discussed with our sales department. 6.1 Knoop Indenter: After equipped with the Knoop indenter, the instrument can measure some material with higher hardness value. 6.2 The 16 micro eyepiece can be offered, The general amplification is 640 (16 40 ) 6.3 The 6.8 inch LCD screen can be supplied; the testing indentation will be showed on the LCD screen and be measured as well. 6.4 The image collection device can be equipped on the instrument, the indentation will be displayed clearly on the screen of computer, and then measure it automatically or manually. 13
