Overview 1.1 Scope of application PCE-HT550 Rockwell hardness tester adopts ROCKWELL measurement principle (see appendix 1), it can measure the Rockwell hardness directly, and has may favorable features, such as simple operation, accurate numerical display, and easy to maintain. It is very suitable for Rockwell hardness measurement to carbide, carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and other materials. It can be used in the inspection, research and production for many industries, such as measuring, mechanical manufacturing, metallurgy, and building material. The design of this machine comply with the Europe standard: BSEN Hardness test for metal material, international standard: ISO : Metal material, Rockwell hardness test, inspection and calibration for hardness tester 1.2 Scope of hardness measurement 0~100HRA, 0~130HRB, 0~100HRC 2. 4 3.2 Structural representation Please see figure 3.1 for the outline of TH500 Rockwell hardness tester, and figure 3.2 for the layout of operation keyboard. Figure 3.1 Figure 3.2 4

5 4. Installation and adjustment 4.1 The installation environment of hardness tester shall be dry and clean, free of corrosive medium and strong magnetic field, within the temperature range of (50~85).The installationn platform shall be firm and stable, free of vibration. To make the leading screw easily roll up or roll down, a hole with diameter of Φ60mm shall be drilled on tester platform in advanced. The leading screw can be circumvolving down to its maximal limit position that is 8.6 below the platform, and no obstacle shall exist within this range. Please see figure 4.1 for the holing position relative to base of hardness tester. Figure Dismantle holding screws used to fix the bottom of hardness tester on the bottom pallet after unpacking. Then the hardness tester can be moved to the prepared platform. Hold its bottom when moving, and it is not allowed to move it via holding other part. Special tips: PCE-HT550 is big and heavy, so proper lifting devicee and reliable fixing method shall be used when making installation, delivery, and transportation. Remove load cells before transportation. If long distance transportation is required, the original packing shall be resumed, the indenter shall be dismantled, and elastic material shall be used to fix main axle and lever to prevent the components from any damage. 4.3 Rotate hand wheel counterclockwise to roll down anvil, remove shockproof cushion, put water level gauge with 0.2mm/m accuracy on the anvil, adjust feet screws of hardnesss tester, and tighten fixing nuts after adjustment. 4.4 Open upper cover and back cover, remove all bandages or elastic material for shockproof. Then Hang the load cell on the loop V-shape groove at the end of lever. Make sure that the edge is mounted in V-shape groove correctly. Please see figure 4.2. 6 5. Hardness Testing Processs 5.1 Preparee for the testt Choose hardness scale base on the specimen s material.., the measurable scale parameters and suitable materials for this machine are listed. After confirm the proper scale, using, on the keyboard to choose the right scale. As figure 5.1 shows, the indicator will light when you choose the scale behind it. Before mounting the indenter, ensure main axial hole, end plane, and the indenter are clean & clear. 5.3 Selection of test force The selection of test force is changeable by rolling the test force selection knob at the right side of tester, please see figure 5..2, and theree are three kinds of test forces: 588.4N (60kgf), 980.7N (100kgf), and 1471N (150kgf). Caution: Test force switching ONLY can be made under unloading statuss Figure 5.1 Figure Dwell time setting Under the state as figure 3.2 shows, press to select dwell time of test force. The last two digits on the display is the dwell time. For the common metallic material, the dwell time should be within the range from 2s to 6s. 5.5 Hardness test Put the specimen on the anvil; keep the specimen fit to the surface of anvil closely, and rotate hand wheel clockwise to lift up the anvil. After the specimen contacts with the indenter, digit 9 will appears on the display, rotate hand wheel continuously and cautiously. See figure5.3. It means that the Initial test force begins to load. 6

7 5.5.2 Keep on rotating the hand wheel, the tester will count the digit backwards until 0. See figure 5.4. The buzzer sounds at the same time. Then, stop rotating the wheel. The test will be performed automatically. Main test force loading, force dwell, unload, result display will be accomplished in turn. The buzzer will sound three times and the display 0 if the hand wheel over-traveled. Then, another test spot should be selected and the whole process should be done again. Figure5.3 figure The result will be showed on the display as figure 5.5 after the test is completed. Figure Drop down specimen table, and unload all test forces, which means the test finishes. 5.5 Precautions In general cases, after changing indenter, anvil or specimen, the first and second tests are invalid, and calculate average value for later tests, and then the value may be more accurate For the results of tests made on convex cylinder surface and concave sphere surface, they shall be corrected according to relevant stipulation in GB/T

8 6. Maintenance, repair, and precautions 6.1 Check the error of hardness indicating dial with standard block periodically. If the error is beyond the permitted scope specified in GB/T , further check whether the test force is accurate, or the indenter is defective and deformed. The periodic certification and calibration for hardness tester shall be made according to relevant standards. 6.2 Carefully mount and dismount indenter, ensure its top is free of damage and pollution, and the mounting side is clean and free of foreign matter. If it will not be used for long time, dismantle it and keep it under proper environment, and paint rustproof oil. 6.3 The surface of anvil and standard hardness block shall be free of pollution, scratch, scotch, and bruising. Paint rust-proof oil for storage. 6.4 During the test, the specimen must be placed stable, and the support shall be reliable, aiming to guarantee that there is no displacement and deformation during the test. 6.5 Lubricate leading screw periodically. Method: remove the anvil and the sheath of leading screw, dribble several drops of light lubricant oil on leading screw's surface, For let the lube be distributed evenly rotate hand wheel to lift up and drop down leading screw time and again,. Then, mount sheath and other parts. Pay attention that the lube shall be proper in amount. 6.6 For daily operation and after shutdown, one should pay attention to dust proofing and corrosion proofing. Rust proofing issue shall be considered in humid environment. 6.7 For the transportation of hardness tester, the weight set and indenter must be dismantled, and shock proofing cushion shall be used between base of indenter and specimen table. For long distance transportation, the original packing shall be resumed, and proper protection measures shall be taken. 6.8 The power must be cut off when opening the testers up cover or back cover or overhauling any internal parts. 6.9 If abnormal phenomenon occurs in hardness tester, do not dismantle it or adjust any fixed mounting spare parts. Fill in the warranty card, and delivered it to company for maintenance. 8

9 Appendix 1: Rockwell hardness measurement principle The Rockwell hardness testing will measure the depth of indentation in fact, and convert the depth of indentation measured under the specified condition into hardness value. The specific procedure is described below. Please see attached figure 1. F0 F1 F0 F0 h0 h1 h2 h2-h0 Attached figure 1 (1) Force initial test force F0 first, press the indenter (diamond cone indenter or ball indenter) into the surface of specimen, and record the initial displacement h0. (2) Force main test force F1 then, keep it for certain time, record the displacement h1 of pressure head at this time, and remove main test force F1. (3) Maintain the initial test force F0, and measure the displacement h2 of indenter at this time. (4) Calculate Rockwell hardness value according to the following formula (where, the unit of displacement is mm): Scale Applied formula A, D, C HR=100-(h 2 -h 0 )/0.002 E, B, G, H, F, K, P, M, L, R, S, V HR=130-(h 2 -h 0 )/

10 Appendix 2: Requirements for minimal thickness of specimen The minimal thickness of specimen depends on the hardness of material and the scale used. In general, no visual deformation mark shall exist on the back surface of specimen after test. For the relation among minimal thickness of specimen, hardness of material, and scale use, please refer to attached figure2 and 3.
