All the samples with a known thickness can be used as a standard calibration piece and, in short referred, as a standard piece. b. The coated standard piece: an even, firmly- coated standard piece with a known thickness can be used as a standard piece, too. What about the application of this product, the coating must be non-magnetic. -Substrate: a. The standard substrate s roughness and magnetism must be close to that of the material to be measured. To indentify the suitability of the substrate, the results of the standard piece have to be compared with those of the material being measured. b. If the thickness of the material is in the range of the preset, two methods can be selected to calibrate: 1) A metallic standard piece with the same thickness as The material being measured can be calibrated. 2) If a similar magnetic and electrically conducting standard metal gasket piece is used, which has sufficient thickness for calibration, it should be ensured that there is no space or gap between the substrates. c. If the curvature of the material is too big to be calibrated on the flat surface, it should be made sure that the coated standard piece s curvature has the same thickness as the material to be measured. -BA-e
2.2 Battery installation - The housing of the instrument has to be gripped tightly with the left hand, the battery cover has to be slided down with the thumb of the right hand according to the arrow specifying the direction, to open it. - The 9V battery has to be inserted into the compartment taking care of the polarity. Then the battery cover has to be closed. - The instrument has to be switched on to check up the battery s function. a. For doing this, the key has to be pressed, as shown in the following illustration: c. Step a and b have to be repeated to make a basic measurement value less than 1µm. This can improve measurement precision Two point calibration a. First a Zero point has to be calibrated. b. A measurement on the standard piece which is close to the thickness of the target piece, has to be taken (like 1000µm): The LCD displays 1006µm, for example: b. After the entire screen displays for 1 second, the standard state is the acceleration mode. If the low battery symbol or appears, the battery has promptly to be replaced, as shown in the following illustration: 2.3 Calibration To ensure a precise test result, the instrument has to be calibrated before. There are three methods to calibrate: 1. Zero point calibration 2. Two point calibration and 3. basic calibration Zero point calibration a. A measurement has to be taken on a standard substrate or an uncoated substrate. On the LCD a data is displayed, for example 0.3µm, as shown below: b. The measurement tip doesn t have to be lifted and the ZERO/ON key has to be pressed. When the buzzer sounds, the Zero point calibration is completed. On the LCD display the following is to be shown: c. The measurement tip may not be lifted and the UP / DOWN key has to be pressed to correct the reading; after this, the calibration is completed and the instrument is ready to process. The following is now shown on the display: To ensure a precise Two point calibration, step b and c have to be repeated. With this, measurement precision can be improved and incidental errors can be reduced Basic calibration Under the following aspects it is necessary to perform a basic calibration: - The top of the measurement tip is worn off - After the measurement tip has been maintained - For special use - In case if the instrument has not been used or calibrated for a long time If the reading goes beyond the preset range of accuracy during the measurement, the measurement tip has to be calibrated again. This procedure is called basic calibration. Seven adjust values can be inputted (zero and 6 thickness values) to re-calibrate the measurement tip. The operation method of basic calibration is as follows: a. Six standard pieces have to be prepared with the thickness at 45~55, 95~105, 220~280, 450~500, 900~1050, 1900~1999 in the unit µm. b. The UP-key and the ZERO/ON key have to be pressed, SNG and 0.0µm the are displayed. Subsequently, a zero calibration to an iron basic can be performed. -BA-e
c. A standard piece with a thickness between 45~50 has to be chosen and a reading for example of 48.0µm is obtained. The UP or DOWN key has to be pressed to adjust the displayed value until the reading is equal with the thickness of the standard piece. Then the next standard piece has to be placed onto the iron basic to be calibrated. d. When the standard piece is calibrated at 95~105, for example 100, SNG and 100µm are displayed. The UP or DOWN key has to be pressed to adjust the displayed value until the reading is equal with the thickness of the standard piece. Then the next standard piece has to be placed onto the iron basic to be calibrated. e. The above steps have to be repeated until the last standard piece is calibrated. It has to be waited until the instrument is auto powered off; so the new calibrated value has been saved in the memory. If the unit is powered on again, it will be processed according to the saved values. 2.4 Unit selection The ZERO/ON key has to be pressed to switch on the instrument. Then the UP/DOWN key has to be pressed to select the test mode. UNT for unit is shown on the display. The standard unit is µm and the following is displayed: By pressing the ZERO/ON key, the desired unit can be selected (µm or mil); the unit always changes between µm and mil, each time when pressing this key. The measurement tip has to get in contact with the surface vertically; any output will be generated with a beep of the buzzer. For another measurement, the tip has to be lifted and the operation above shown, has to be repeated. Caution: In case if the measurement tip was too close in contact with the iron basic in process of self-check after the instrument was powered on, the LCD will display ERR! 2.6 Continuous measurement mode The ZERO/ON key has to be pressed to switch on the instrument. Then the UP/DOWN key has to be pressed to select the measurement mode. If the LCD displays CTN, this means Continuous measurement mode, shown in the following illustration: The measurement tip has to be placed onto the target piece and then it has to be pressed lightly onto the surface of the material to be measured. The buzzer will not sound during the measurement. The measurement result will be displayed continuously until the measurement tip is lifted. The last measurement value will be saved automatically and the data is numbered as 1. When the second measurement is finished, the reading will be numbered in sequence as 2, until the max memory is 15. LCD will display as follows: 2.5 Single measurement mode A target piece to test has to be prepared. The ZERO/ON key has to be pressed to switch on the instrument. The standard test mode is the single measurement mode and it is displayed as follows: 2.7 Standard deviation measurement mode The ZERO/ON key has to be pressed and then the UP/DOWN key to change the measurement mode. If DIF is displayed on the LCD, it means that the coating standard deviation measurement mode is entered. On the display is shown the following: The measurement tip has to contact the test surface vertically and it has to be pressed lightly onto it. Then an output appears, for example 136 µm, the buzzer beeps and it is displayed as follows: The measurement tip has to be placed onto the target piece and then lightly pressed onto the surface o fit.the buzzer will sound, the LCD will display the value of -BA-e
difference between the last reading and the current reading, shown as follows: 2.8 Data store, recall and delete Display NO value: Data storage The measurement result will be automatically saved after every measurement up to the maximum measurement quantity of 15 measurement results, so the max number is 15. There is only shown the reading without showing how many records have been saved in memory Recall stored data When the measurement number is flashing, the UP/ DOWN key has to be pressed to review the measurement values Data delete a. Delete a current data: If it isn t desired to delete one of the recorded readings, the DOWN key has to be pressed to get back to the above one as soon as the measurement number is flashing. Then another measurement has to be taken to replace the recorded data. b. Delete all the data: All the data can be deleted by pressing the ZERO/ON key for two seconds as soon as the measurement number is flashing and subsequently the DEL-key. Now all data are deleted. 2.9 Data analysis The instrument also provides a data analysis function after having measured several group data. The UP/DOWN key has to be pressed to change the mode. The display will show the average value (AVG), MAX, MIN, standard warp (dfr), data number (NO), and it is displayed as follows: Display average value: Display MAX value: Display MIN value: Display dfr value: Caution: a. When the measurement number is flashing, the ZERO/ON key has to be pressed to stop it and the UP/DOWN key to change the measurement mode. b. The values shown in the instruction manual are merely an example of illustration, it has to be referred to the value obtained in practice. c. If there hasn t been any operation or key pressed for 1 minute, the instrument will automatically be powered off. 3. Annotations 3.1 Attentions Factors which affect the measurement precision and utilization: a. Magnetism of the substrate metal: The magnetism rule varies with the magnetism of a specific substrate metal ( in application there is only a slight change of magnetism at low carbon steel). It can be also used a coated standard piece for calibration to avoid the interference resulting from the heat treatment and after that the cool down process of the metal. b. Thickness of the substrate metal: Every instrument is subject to a critical thickness of a certain substrate metal which allows the measurement to be taken when the thickness is larger than the critical. This instrument s critical thickness (minimum substrate thickness) is 0.5mm. c. Verge effect: This instrument is sensitive to the sturdy change on the surface of the target piece. So the output obtained near the verge or the inner angle of the piece is not reliable. d. Curvature: The curvature of the target piece can affect the measurement result. This effect will increase as the curvature s radius is reduced. e. Roughness degree of the surface: The roughness degree of the substrate metal and the coating can affect the measurement. The bigger the roughness degree, the bigger the effect. A rough surface will cause a system error and incidental errors. The measurement number should be increased at different places to reduce the incidental errors. If the substrate metal is rough, the ZERO point has to be adjusted on the uncoated substrate metal which has a similar roughness as the target piece; or an impregnant has to be used which cannot erode the substrate metal and dissolve the coating; then the ZERO point has to be -BA-e
adjusted. f. Magnetic field: The strong magnetic field, generated from the surroundding electronics will severely affect measurement precision. g. Adhesive layer: The instrument is sensitive to the attachment between The measurement tip and the coating, so any layer must be cleaned to make sure that the measurement tip contacts the coating directly. h. The measurement tip s pressure: The pressure on the target piece can affect the measurement value, so the instrument has got a spring to generate a steady pressure. i. The measurement tip s angle The angle of the measurement tip affects the measurement. The contact with the target piece always must be in an upright angle. j. The target piece s distortion The measurement tip can distort the surface of a soft coating on the target piece. If the distortion is too big, the measurement value will not be correct Attentions in operation a. The property of the substrate metal The metal magnetism and the roughness of the surface of the standard piece should be similar with that of the target piece. b. The thickness of the substrate: It has to be checked whether the thickness of the substrate is less than the critical thickness of 0.5mm. c. Verge effect: It is not good to measure at locations where there are steep shape changes of the material being measured, i.e. verges, holes or inner corners etc. d. Curvature: Do not measure on a distorted surface. e. The readings: Several measurements should be taken at the same area, because the readings may not be identical all the time. The local difference of the coating also requests to measure several times at a specified area, especially rough surfaces. f. Cleanness of the surface: All the adhesive layer on the surface like dust, grease, rust etc. should be cleaned before starting to perform measurements. It should be taken care of not removing the coating About the measurement reading: a. As per statistics, a single value is not reliable enough, so all the output readings are an average value of multiple measurements which are carried out by the unit within hundreds of milliseconds. b. To ensure more precision in the measurement readings, it can be measured several times, then the maximum error value has to be deleted. At last the analysis function has to be used to get the five different statistic data: - average value (AVG) - MAXimum - MINimum - Standard warp (dfr) - Data number (NO) c. According to the international standard, the final measurement result can be expressed with following formula: CH=A+/-2D CH: thickness of the coating A: average value of the measured data (AVG) D: standard warp (dfr) 3.2 Maintenance and warrenty Maintenance: Replacement and maintenance of battery: After the instrument is powered on and the symbol Appears on the display, the batteries have to be replaced immediately. For details it has to be referred to figures and contents in step 2.2 (battery installation). The battery has to be removed if the instrument is not used for a longer period in order to avoid damages resulting from a leaking battery The instrument may not be used in following environment: a. Splashes of water or high levels of dust b. Air with high salt or sulphur contents c. Air with other gases or chemical materials d. High temperature or humidity (above 50 C; 90%) or direct sunlight The instrument may not be disassembled or any internal alterations may not be conducted Never use alcohol or diluents to clean the instrument which may cause that the LCD will be eroded. It simply has to be cleaned with a small damp sponge and mild soap. Warranty: In cases of warranty the provided warranty card has to be read through and the same has to be used. We disclaim any liability due to: - transportation damages - incorrect use or operation - manipulation, alterations or repair attempts - without warranty card or invoice This product has got a one-year warranty period beginning from the purchasing date. 3.3 Specific declarations -BA-e
