1 Transport & handling 1.1 Transport SLIBETTE 6 and 8 grinder/polishers are supplied packed in a cardboard box. If the machine is on a plinth it is delivered on a transport pallet. 1.2 Handling SLIBETTE 6 and 8 grinder/polishers can be easily transported in the packaging in which they are delivered. If the grinder is on a plinth, it must be verified that the plinth is bolted securely to the transport pallet. 1.3 Setup Grinder/polishers must be set up on a secure, even surface. Then the grinder/polisher must be fastened securely to the floor or onto a workshop bench by means of the four holes that were used to attach the grinder/polisher to the pallet. The electrical voltage used for connection must be within the stated voltages shown on the motor plate. The machine must be connected with reference to the electrical diagram (see section 7.6). The task of electrical connection must be undertaken by an authorised electrician. Check that the motor has the correct rotation direction (see arrow on the shield). C A Fig.: 1.1 B Prior to use, check that the grinding wheel (A) can rotate freely without becoming loose. The grinding unit (B) must be adjusted so there is a distance of approx. 2 mm between the unit and the grinding wheel. The eye guard (C) must be clean and in the correct position. All these checks and adjustments may only be performed if the machine is switched off. When starting the grinder for the first time, run it at maximum speed for approx. 5 minutes before use. Make sure you keep a safe distance from the machine during this time. 5

2 Instructions for use 2.1 Operation After you have made the above-mentioned adjustments and connected the grinder/polisher, it is ready for use. Run the item steadily in towards the grinder/polisher and avoid hard, jerky pressure or blows; always use a firm but light pressure to avoid damaging the grinder/polisher or overloading the motor. Allow the machine to reach maximum speed before beginning grinding. And aim to grind at the highest speed possible. Fasten the item securely, if possible, using a clamp or vice; this is safer than holding it in your hand. Avoid grinding on the side of the grinding wheel unless a cup wheel grinder is being used. Do not stop the grinding wheel rotating by pushing something against it; always allow the grinding wheel to rotate freely until it stops of its own accord. It is important to work in good light. 2.2 Safety regulations for stationary machine tools Follow these regulations to achieve the best result and to make the best use of your new machine. Any good craftsman must respect the tool he is working with. He knows they represent a constantly improved design. He also knows that incorrect use of the machine is dangerous. This is the theme of a new safety programme for use of machine tools. These safety regulations are based on approved practice in the industry and in the workshop. 2. Keep the safety guards in place and in good condition. 3. All machine tools equipped with a power plug must be earthed. If you use an adapter to fit a 2-pin socket, the adapter must always be earthed. Never remove the 3rd pin. 1. Know your tool. Read the instructions carefully. Familiarise yourself with its use and limitations, as well as the specific potential dangers associated with this tool. 4. Remove adjustable spanners and wrenches. Get into the habit of checking that these have been removed before connecting the machine. 5. Keep the workbench tidy. Untidiness can lead to accidents. 7. Keep children away. All visitors should keep a good distance from the work area. 6. Avoid dangerous work environments. Do not use machine tools in damp or wet 6 premises and do not expose them to rain. Make sure you have good working light.

9. Make your workshop childproof by using a tool lock, a line breaker or by removing start keys. 10. Do not overload the machine. It can carry out the job better and more safely if you use it for the purpose it was designed for. 12. Wear correct clothing. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, ties, rings, necklaces or other jewellery that could get caught in the moving parts. Non-slip footwear is recommended. Wear protective headgear. 13. Always use eye protection and perhaps ear protection. Also use face or dust masks for a dusty job. Ordinary spectacles only function as glass. They are NOT adequate eye protection. 11. Use the right tool. Do not force the tool or unit to carry out a job it was not designed to do. 15. Know your reach. Keep your balance and a good foothold all the time. 14. Work safely. Use clamps or vices to hold the material in place. This is safer than using your own hands, and you can then use both hands to operate the tool. 16. Maintain the tool carefully. The best and safest work is achieved by keeping the tool sharp and clean. Follow the instructions when lubricating and replacing spare parts. 17. Reduce the risk of starting the machine unintentionally. Make sure the power switch is off. 18. Switch off the power to the tool before servicing and when replacing spare parts e.g. grinding wheel, polishing wheel, knives, blades, milling cutters and similar. 19. Use recommended spare parts. Look in the manual for recommended spare parts. Using obsolete spare parts can lead to people being injured. 7

2.3 Maintenance The grinder/polisher must be kept in a dry place, so the grinding and polishing wheels are not made damp by steam or rain. The grinding wheel often becomes uneven with use, so it is recommended that you level it up at suitable intervals. When the grinding wheel is over 25% worn it is advisable to replace it. An uneven grinding wheel leads to vibrations, which will eventually ruin the bearings of the machine. Damaged grinding units, eye guards and shields should be replaced to prevent personal injury. When the grinding wheel is to be replaced, remove the outer shield first. Unscrew the nut so you can remove the outer flange and grinding wheel. The new grinding wheel must not exceed the dimensions specified on the motor plate on the machine; it is important that the hole dimensions are correct. The grinding wheels are equipped with labels (plates made of a compressible material), which are positioned around the hole on either side of the grinding wheel. If these labels are missing or become damaged, they must be replaced by new labels of the same size. Fit the new grinding wheel and screw on and tighten the nut. Tighten the nut to the extent that it can hold the grinding wheel firmly, but it must not be tightened so much that the grinding wheel is put under considerable stress, as this can lead to unwanted stresses in the grinding wheel. 8

3 Belt arm 3.1 Fitting the belt arm If the grinder is fitted with a grinding screen this must be completely removed before the belt arm is fitted. When fitting the belt arm, first fit the link (H). The belt arm can then be fitted onto the link and you can secure it with the bolt (I). Then you can put the spacer (G) on the shaft, followed by the contact wheel (F) and finally the nut (E). Then put the grinding belt (D) onto the belt arm, and finally secure the outer shield (C) to the wheel (B) and nut (A). 3.2 Replacing the grinding belt When the grinding belt has worn down it must be replaced, which is done in the following way: Remove the outer shield (A) (see fig. 3.2) of the casing and pull the handle (B) down. This releases the grinding belt (C), so it can be removed and replaced by a new one, which should be fitted in reverse order. Check that the direction of the arrows on the rear of the belt corresponds to the direction of rotation. Once the new grinding belt has been fitted, it is necessary to ensure a straight running action by adjusting the handle (D), which should be loosened until the grinding belt runs straight on the contact wheel. Then tighten the handle (B). This adjustment of the grinding belt must only be carried out by pulling the grinding belt manually, and never with the machine switched on. D A B C Fig

There are many different types of grinding belt, so it is important to select the correct belt type. The material the item is made of must be taken into consideration, as the grain size, grinding belt material and glue, etc. may vary. In this connection it should be noted that there are several different types of contact wheels, of varying softness and design for different purposes. 3.3 Operating the belt arm Belt arm grinding may take place at the contact wheel or on the surface grinding table. It is also possible to remove the surface grinding table and grind freely on the grinding belt. Run the item steadily in towards the grinding belt and avoid hard, jerky pressure or blows; always use a firm but light pressure to avoid damaging the grinding belt or overloading the motor. 3.4 Adjustment Before use, check that the polishing wheels (A) (see fig.4.1) are screwed firmly to the shaft. The polishing wheel must be fitted during operation. The polishing wheel (A) must rotate freely without being loose. Checks and adjustments must only be performed if the machine is still and switched off. A Fig Operation Once you have connected and adjusted the polishing wheel, the polisher is ready for use. Run the item steadily in towards the polishing wheel and avoid hard, jerky pressure or blows; always use a firm but light pressure to avoid damaging the polishing wheel or overloading the motor. Allow the machine to reach maximum speed before beginning polishing. And aim to polish at the highest speed possible. Fasten the item securely, if possible, using a clamp or vice; this is safer than holding it in your hand. Do not stop the polishing wheel rotating by pushing something against it; always allow the polishing wheel to rotate freely until it stops of its own accord. 10

4 Instructions for Bit Grinding Unit type A and B Adjustment before grinding begins. Adjustments should be made when the grinding wheel is still. 4.1 Setting up the Bit Grinding Unit Loosen the locking screw (17) and turn the arm (1) so that the nut (13) can be unscrewed and the shaft (10) taken out of the bit grinding unit and put into the machine, where the shaft (10) is inserted so that the threaded section is turned away from the machine. Then tighten the Allen screws. Put the compression spring (11) onto the shaft (10) (position the spacer (34) on the shaft at PSD 5) and put the rest of the bit grinding unit on the shaft (10). Attach the protective cover (12) and thrust bearing (20), and finally tighten the nut (13). 1 Allen key (34) is included in the kit. Insert the Allen bolt (19) from the front, and then tighten it (19). The arm (1) of the bit grinding unit B must be adjusted so that +/- (31) lines up with the markings on the arm (1). 4.2 Positioning the bit Loosen the adjustment screw (7) and completely unscrew it. Then loosen the clamping screw (16), place the bit in the V-groove, and push the clamp (5) forward to touch the bit. Tighten the clamping screw (16) again. Now use your thumb to turn the bit to the right so that one cutting edge of the bit touches the outer side of the stop (8). Use the adjustment screw (7) to make fine adjustments to the position. Pick the bit up and start the machine. 4.3 Grinding Take the arm (1) in your hand and loosen the locking screw (17). Then turn the arm (1) back and place the bit in the V-groove, holding it down with your thumb while at the same time turning it forwards. Turn the arm (1) with your other hand using rapid movements (reduces blueing) from one end position to the other, and then use your fingers to turn the bit 180. Repeat these movements until there are no more sparks, then adjust the adjustment screw (7) and continue the interactive grinding of the blades. Repeat this until the bit achieves the correct angle. 11

Only bits with symmetrical tips can drill holes at the desired position, and you must therefore finish by fine grinding both blades a few times until there are no more sparks, and without performing tightening actions using the adjustment screw (7). 4.4 Angle of the bit Angle of the tip: The bit grinding unit is for grinding bits with tip angles of , which are those most frequently used. The angle of the tip cannot be changed by adjusting the bit grinding unit. Chisel edge angle: Perform grinding so that the chisel edge angle is approximately 55. See Fig. II Clearance angle: Generally speaking, the clearance angle should be 6-8. See Fig III. As stated previously, it will be larger if the stop is more than mm from the grinding wheel. If the clearance angle is to be changed, the arm can be adjusted using + or -. For bits over 25 mm it may be necessary to reduce the length of the chisel edge (see Fig. IV), as a large chisel edge places a large load on the drill. Always keep the V-groove as clean of grinding dust as possible. Ensure there is good working light. Follow standard safety rules and regulations for grinders. Avoid unnecessary heating of the bit tip when grinding, e.g. by keeping the grinding wheel true and using a visible grain. 4.5 Using a diamond to true the grinding wheel Loosen the Allen bolt (19) and tighten the locking screw (17). Loosen the nut (13) and use the round finger nut to set the stop (8) for the bit to approximately 5 mm from the grinding wheel. Loosen the adjustment screw (16) for the clamp, and lay the holder containing the diamond in the V-groove. Push the clamp carefully forward to touch the diamond holder, until the diamond is approximately 2 mm from the grinding wheel. Tighten the adjustment screw (16) again. Start up the machine. The arm can now swing towards the centre. True the side of the grinding wheel with very little tightening of the diamond using the adjustment screw (7). Continue truing until the wheel is completely clean and smooth. Take care not to let the diamond touch the flange or nut at the shaft end. Once the diamond is removed you can prepare for bit grinding. 4.6 Grinding wheel A cup wheel must be used. Grain sizes in the range 36 to 60 are recommended, of normal corundum or precious corundum as required. 12
