General Machine Instructions Cyclone Cyclone Plus Storm Storm Plus Note these instructions are based on the Cyclone machines, But the Cylinder Section is the same on the Storm Machines Tempest Tempest Plus/Evo Note these instructions are based on the Cyclone machines, But please see the Mortice and Cylinder sections for cutting keys on the Tempest ranges MACHINE INSTALLATION AND PREPARATION The key-cutting machine can be installed by the purchaser and does not require any special skills. However, some checks and preparation for use need to be carried out by the operator. Checking for damage The key-cutting machine is solid and compact and will not normally damage if transport, unpacking and installation have all been carried out according to the instructions in this manual. However, it is always advisable to check that the machine has not suffered any damage. Environmental conditions To ensure that the best use is made of the key-cutting machine, certain parameters must be borne in mind: - damp, badly ventilated sites should be avoided. - The ideal conditions for the machine are: - temperature: from 10 to 40 C - relative humidity: approx. 60% Positioning Place the key-cutting machine on a horizontal surface, solid enough to take the weight To facilitate operation and maintenance, install the machine with a space of at least 200 mm on all sides Ensure that the machine stands perfectly balanced on the four feet. Vibration is avoided when the machine is properly set on the horizontal plane. ATTENTION: ensure that the machine voltage is the same as that of the mains, which must be properly earthed and provided with a differential switch. Page 1 / 10
Operating Instructions Use of the machine The Cyclone / Cyclone Plus machine is suitable for cutting all types of house and automotive flat style cylinder keys, e.g. Yale, Union, Legge, Nissan Etc. On the right side it can also cut most style of Mortice keys e.g. Chubb, Yale, ERA, etc with the Cyclone Plus added ability of being able to cut longer rim length and some double bitted Mortice keys. Health & Safety Recommendations (please also see our printable wall poster) - Always wear safety goggles - Do not operate machine without safety guards in position - Always switch off power before adjusting or working on the machine. Do not touch cutters while machine is in operation. - Clamp the keys only when the key carriage is in its neutral parked position - Turn the mains power off when the machine is not in operation - Key cutting machinery should be kept out of customers potential reach. We recommend that the machine be located behind your counter area. If this is not possible, Perspex or other suitable material should be used to protect the key area. - No machine should be used in an area where the customer could be subjected to swarf, etc from the machine. ATTENTION: for complete safety during the cutting operations, take the following precautions: Always work with dry hands. Check that the machine is properly earthed. Wear protective goggles even if the machine has a protective shield over the cutting tool. Start the motor only after completing the operations on the carriage (securing the keys, etc...). Keep hands away from the cutting tool in motion. Cutting a key (Cylinder) With the carriage in the parked position, place the original key in the left hand jaw. In order to locate the correct position for clamping, raise the key set guide (9) and move the original key until the shoulder of the key is flush with the edge of the key set guide. Then, clamp the original key firmly by turning the hand lever. NOTE Ensure the 4-way jaw is set at the correct position for the type of key being cut (e.g. best jaw to hold the key securely). In order to change the position, Loosen the vise handle, then lift both the top and bottom jaws and rotate them in a clockwise direction. Page 4 / 10
With the key set guide still in a raised position, place the selected key blank in the right hand jaw and locate the key blank in the correct position by re-applying the procedure described above. NOTE Ensure the right hand jaw position is the same as the left hand one.. Clamp the key blank firmly by turning the jaw top handle/lever. Lower the key set guide (9). Power on the machine Main power (14). Switch the ON/OFF switch to ON to start the motor. With the aid of the right side hand wheel, offer the key blank to the cutter and trace the original key by moving the key carriage from starting position being the key shoulder, to the left (ending up at the tip of the key) also applying pressure to the carriage handle towards the machine direction. NOTE Do not cut the shoulder of the key blank!. Return the key carriage to the parked position and turn off the motor.. Release the keys from the jaws and deburr the new cut key using the deburring brush *Clamp rotation 1) Loosen the clamp closing knob by a few turns. 2) Raise the clamp (both jaws) and turn so that the required side is facing the tracer point and cutter. NOTE - Carry out the operation on both clamps (on the left-hand or on the right-hand carriage). 1) Turn the clamps to find the appropriate side for securing the key. 2) Loosen the knobs by a couple of turns. 3) Raise the lower part of the clamps and turn to the required position Guideline - Side A of the clamp: for keys to be fitted on their backs, keys with double cuts without groove and cruciform keys - Side B of the clamp: for keys placed on their backs and having cuts with a depth of less than 3,9 mm - Side C and D of the clamp: for keys to be cut on both sides and locked on the groove Securing the keys in the clamps 1) Position the original key (left-hand jaw) and key blank (right-hand jaw), ensuring that: a) the keys are well positioned and secured in the clamp; b) the key stop is resting against the calibration tabs 2) secure the keys by closing the clamps with the knobs Cutting a key (Mortice) Having identified the correct key blank required to duplicate your customers original, place the original key into the right hand jaw (On the jaw set up to the right of the machine) either using the groove in the jaw as a location guide (if using the AB side of the jaws) or the back section of the jaw (if using the opposite / narrower side of the jaws) and push the key until it stops at the collar (with the head of the key pointing to the right of the machine) Now tighten the jaw to secure the key in place. NOTE angle the key blade slightly downwards to help ensure a flat / straight cut. Now position the new key blank in the left jaw, following the above instructions and then tighten.. Clamp the key blank firmly by turning the jaw top handle/lever. Power on the machine Main power. Switch the ON/OFF switch to ON to start the motor. Firmly grasp the black handle on the bottom of the mortice carriage and with your right hand hold the Spinning wheel handle (Part number 11). Page 5 / 10
. Now cut the key blank by following the profile of the original key by moving the Spinning wheel handle left and right as needed and pushing the carriage in and out, again as needed to match the pattern of the original. NOTE DO NOT move the spinning handle left and right at the same time as moving the carriage in and out!. Once you have completed cutting the key, remove it from the jaw and clear off any excess burs or waste material with the nylon brush and / or file! Flared cuts cutting bit keys (right-hand carriage) Tilting clamps CYCLONE PLUS The clamps on the right-hand carriage, used to cut bit, double bit and rim keys, may be of the tilting type so that the cuts can be flared. To activate tilting: pull out the pin To deactivate tilting: insert the pin to lock the clamps in the fixed horizontal position. To replace the cutter (cylinder / mortice) NOTE UNPLUGmachine from mains before carrying on!. Undo fully the three screws located to the rear and sides of the machine to allow the top half of the machine to come free and move it backwards.. Insert a 4mm allen key in the shaft next to the cylinder cutting disc to fix the axis still (as diagram on extra page of instructions) Cylinder. Undo the left nut, located against the cylinder cutter / in an Anticlockwise direction, and then remove washer and old cutter.. Now replace it with a new cutter plus washer and tighten up bolt in a clockwise direction Mortice. Undo the right nut, located against the cylinder cutter / in again an Anticlockwise direction, and then remove washer and old cutter.. Now replace it with a new cutter plus washer and tighten up bolt in a clockwise direction Machine adjustment guide NOTE UNPLUG machine from mains before carrying on! Checking and setting The cutting tools on the Machine are the parts used to cut the key blanks and should be periodically checked and replaced, if necessary. Every time the cutting tool is changed, and during periodical operational tests, check calibration. Calibration: LEFT-HAND CARRIAGE (Cylinder) The key-cutting machine requires two types of calibration: axis and depth. Axis calibration: Page 6 / 10
Axis calibration is regulation of the space between the stop and the cuts The axis setting checked using Two Identical keys, Both with Shoulders on Front and Back. Place both keys in the Left 2 jaws, and line them to the BACK Shoulder. Check the Flipper guide Triangles now hit the front 2 shoulders, if not loosen the allan screws On the flippers and adjust into place. Once in place tighten up the screws. Now test the Cutter and trace (follower) hit the shoulders of the key blanks, If Not, loosen the Two Larger allan screws on the tracer housing and adjust left or right Accordingly to the directing needed to adjust to, Once in place Re-tighten the allan screws. Depth calibration: Depth calibration is regulation of the cutting depth 1) Ensure that the key-cutting machine is off by unplugging the power cable. 2) Place the adjusting keys (as mentioned above) in the clamps 3) Check that the adjusting keys adhere properly to the clamps. 4) Turn the gauge rod (Flipper) towards the operator so that the gauges come into contact with the adjusting keys to check keys are in place then Lower the gauge rod. 5) Hold the carriage towards the cutter / Tracer with the lever. 6) Raise the carriage and take up to the cutting tool 7) Turn the cutting tool anticlockwise manually and check that it skims the adjusting keys in several places. 8) If necessary, regulate the depth of the cut with the micrometric tracer point, as follows: a) loosen the screw holding the tracer point. b) turn the ring nut clockwise to advance the tracer point c) turn the ring nut anticlockwise to return 9) Repeat these operations until regulation is complete, then tighten the tracer point locking grub screw Calibration: RIGHT-HAND CARRIAGE (Mortice) Axis calibration 1) Turn off the machine and unplug the power lead. 2) Make sure the tracer point and cutter are of the same thickness. 3) Lock the tilting movement of the clamps by inserting the pin (Cyclone Plus) into its seat. 4) Close the 2 clamps with their knobs WITH UN-used CYLINDER KEYS IN both with TWO Shoulders Identical keys as mentioned above 5) Release / Raise the carriage 6) Use the lever to raise the carriage and take the right-hand side of the clamp / KEY up against the left hand side of the tracer point / KEY and cutter 7) The ideal condition is for both tools (tracer point and cutter) to be in contact with the relative side of the KEY. If this is not so, loosen the tracer point holder screws and move the tracer point (right or left) until the ideal condition is found. 8) Tighten the allan screws Depth calibration Depth calibration is regulation of the cutting depth 1) Ensure that the key-cutting machine is off by unplugging the power cable. 2) Place the adjusting keys in the clamps 3) Lock the clamps in the horizontal position 4) Raise the carriage and take the adjusting keys into contact with the tracer point and cutting tool 5) Turn the cutting tool manually in the opposite sense to the rotation and check that it skims the adjusting key in several places. 6) If necessary, regulate the cutting depth by means of the tracer point, as described; loosen Top allan screw - turn the Screw UNDER Follower - clockwise to advance the tracer point - turn the Screw UNDER Follower - anticlockwise to return 7) Repeat these operations until the cutting tool skims the adjusting key in several points. Then tighten all. Page 7 / 10
