1 PHONE: (972) Dr. Eugene W. Lewis December 3, October 28, 2017 Dr. Eugene W. Lewis of Plano, Texas passed away October 28, 2017, at the age 84. He was born December 3, 1932, to Eugene Earl Lewis and Maybelle (Sanders) Lewis in Southside of Chicago, Illinois. Eugene was a quintessential Midwesterner. He was the oldest of three brothers. After Eugene graduated high school at the age of 15, he received his bachelor s at the University of Chicago, a master s degree at the University of Illinois, and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. During his decades of work in the private sector, he designed and tested rocket engines at Rocket Dyne, designed and tested Tomahawk missiles for Martin Marietta, tested the conformity and feasibility of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile nose cones at Bendix Corporation, and built engines for Ford Motor s Aircraft Division. He moved to the Washington DC area to work on weapons system evaluation for the Institute for Defense Analysis prior to joining the Commerce Department. During his 31 years with Commerce, Eugene held numerous positions, including the Director position for the Deemed Export Division. His most recent job with Bureau of Industry and Security was with the Chemical and Biological Controls Division of the Office of Nonproliferation and Treaty Compliance. Eugene was a member of Mensa International and a University Alum of Chicago, Illinois, and Michigan. He was a Naval Reservist, Ford B-36 Aircraft Engine Designer, Rocket Dyne Rocket Designer, Bendix Aerospace Re-Entry Designer, Martine Marietta Tomahawk Missile Designer and an analyst for the Institute for Defense Analysis Weapons. Eugene s skilled interest included: race car driver, ski instructor, competitive diver and swimmer, competitive pole vaulter, baseball pitcher, surfer, painter, photographer, and fountain pen collector. He was a proud owner of his 1968 and 1995 Corvettes. He is survived by daughter, Lisa Ducher of Porter, Texas; sons, Karl Lewis and wife Zoe of Plano, Texas and Kirk Lewis of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, Angela Lewis, Julia Lewis, Ashley Lewis, Brittany Lewis, and Brandon Lewis; great-

2 grandchildren, Zachary Palacios and Brock Lewis; brother, Richard Lewis and wife, Ruth of Downers Grove, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Lewis. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel in Allen, Texas. A reception is to follow the service. The interment is to follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials Gene, although our friendship was way too short, it left an indelible mark on me. We shared many exiting adventures on our ski trips and more intimate moments at many of our social gatherings with other friends from the Ski Club of Washington. I was there when you got hurt on the ski slopes, and was with you in spirit as you, to my great admiration, bravely suffered and conquered the long recupperation. Throughout our acquaintance you were always a "class act" and a true "Gentle-man", whether on the slopes as a companion or ski instructor, or as a drinking buddy within our social circle. Too bad we lost touch afterwards with your move to Texas, but happy that were with your loved ones when your name was called from above. God bless you and may we meet again one day on a different set of heavenly slopes. FRANK PEÑARANDA, NOVEMBER 9, 2017 I met Gene in 2012 when I first joined BIS. He was always there to help answer my questions and I enjoyed hearing his stories about his surfing days in Malibu and of course skiing trips. I'll miss you, Gene! MARY QUACH, NOVEMBER 3, 2017 Gene, Remember, I always told you you are great, then you smiled with thank you. My day at work was never complete if I did not stop by your cubicle to joke and laugh. Let me say it one more time Gene, you are great. Now you are in a place where everyone is beautiful, happy, and great, a company of great people. You always shared happiness, and now you are in

3 everlasting happiness. You and I always talked about our engineering background, and how good it is to be an engineer, and the marvels we engineers do in and for the society. You bet engineers came in numbers to welcome you. Gene, inspire us from there as you did from here. You are only taking an extended leave of absence, and we shall see each other again. Until then, we shall keep doing what we did together before your retirement, that is, the work of public servants in support of our nation and the world. You never rested, always dead line to meet, meeting to attend, etc., so now, you can relax, relax, Gene, and enjoy the beauty and the happiness of life everlasting. Peace, joy and happiness forever. 4 KIMBERLY ORR, NOVEMBER 2, 2017 I was blessed to work with Gene almost my entire career at Commerce. He was a ray of sunshine and a great colleague. He had such an amazing life and was such a good son to his mom. I'm glad he got to spend the last few years in Texas with family. Years from now I plan on drinking a Dr. Pepper with him in heaven. He has been missed since he retired and my prayers are with the family. KIMBERLY ORR, NOVEMBER 2, 2017 Gene was in Commerce as a contractor when I came to the Department in 1983 and we worked together for most of the following 32 years until he left to be with his family in Texas. He went through a lot of Physical problems over those years but It never impacted his love for snow and great downhill runs. Even though he has been gone from the Department for a couple of years, those of us who knew him will always remember his friendly nature and focus on the mission of the Department. Retirement is a decision we make, leaving mortality is in the hands of a higher authority. He is in a better place now and I expect that working export license applications is no longer a priority. ELROY GENE CHRISTIANSEN, NOVEMBER 1, 2017 My deepest sympathy to the family. I had not known Gene long but as everyone at Commerce has stated before me, he always had a smile and a kind word. I enjoyed listening to his adventures. He has been missed here since retirement and I am sure he will be missed by loved ones. When you think of him remember his precious smile and adventurous heart. I enjoyed working with him at Commerce and found him to be a thoughtful and entertaining colleague. I always enjoyed talking with him about skiing - something I fear I can't do but that he always encouraged me to try. I also appreciated seeing him in the gym and having his encouragement as a gym buddy - even after his skiing accident. Gene was kind, friendly, smart, and gregarious. I know he was happy to rejoin family in

5 Texas after his move, despite his having to give up a little independence. What a blessing that he got to spend his remaining years in the bosom of his family. My sincere condolences to his friends and loved ones. ROCHELLE W, NOVEMBER 1, 2017 Gene was a colleague at the Bureau of Industry and I actually can't remember him without a smile. Even after breaking a vertebrae in his neck while skiing a few years ago, he came back to work with a noticeable rigidity in his neck but a smile on his face. Smart as they come and tough as a two dollar steak - a man's man and I am grateful for the times I got to work, talk and laugh with Gene at the Department of Commerce. I pray God will comfort your family at this time of grief and loss. He has been missed since leaving the DC area, but I'm glad to hear he was able to have at least a few years near his kids and grandkids. He was a true gentleman and he will be missed by all. I remember dancing with him in New Orleans in a jazz club. We've also hit more than a few museums together. Gene was the smartest and nicest person I've met. The world was a better place for having Gene in it. My condolences to Gene's family, whom he loved.
