4 Greeting from the Office of the Governor, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Dear Friends: October 2016 On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Karyn and I welcome you to the Second East Coast German American Industry Forum. Since 1947, the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) has been providing resources for German companies to assimilate into the United States market. The GACC assists companies through services like market studies, individual partner search and office representation. The resources and services provided by GACC are critical for companies to be able to have an effective and sustainable transition into the American market place. The Baker-Polito administration is pleased to welcome the Second East Coast German American Industry Forum to Boston. We hope that Boston s unique and rapidly expanding industries drive meaningful conversations about factors affecting the German American economy, and more specifically the German- Massachusetts economy. 9 Welcome Dietmar Rieg CEO, German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Mr. Rieg has served as President and CEO of the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) in New York since July Prior to joining the GACC New York, Mr. Rieg held various banking positions for Bayern LB starting in Since 1993, he served in multiple senior roles in Corporate Banking and Project Finance in New York. Ralf Horlemann Consul General, German Consulate General Boston Dr. Ralf Horlemann has served Germany s Foreign Service for more than two decades and has a rich background in international security policy, transatlantic relations and Asian affairs. He took up his position as Consul General of Germany to New England in July During various assignments at headquarters and abroad, Dr. Horlemann has made major contributions to formulating and developing Germany s policy in conflict prevention and management. James C. Bean Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Northeastern University James C. Bean is the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University. Prior to joining Northeastern, he held a number of academic positions, including Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon from and Dean of the Lundquist College of Business from He has earned a Master s Degree and Ph.D. from Stanford University in operations research and a B.S. in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College. 7

10 The Transatlantic Marketplace - The CEO Talk Professor Klaus Josef Lutz Chairman & CEO, BayWa AG Prof. Klaus Josef Lutz has been BayWa s Chief Executive Officer since July His responsibilities include: Internationalization/ Risk Management, international agriculture and fruit holdings, Chairman of executive and supervisory committees of the international agriculture and fruit holdings, Group strategy, PR/ Corporate Communications, Audit, Corporate Governance, Personnel and Corporate Marketing. Wayne T. Smith Chairman & CEO, BASF Corporation Wayne T. Smith is a Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE. He assumed this position in April He is currently responsible for the divisions Catalysts, Coatings, Performance Materials, Market & Business Development North America, as well as Regional Functions North America. Prior to this, since 2010, Smith was President of BASF s Polyurethanes division, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. Alexandra V. Roth, (Moderator) International Business and Strategy Group, Northeastern University Alexandra V. Roth is an Executive Professor of International Business at the D Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, Boston. Prior to joining Northeastern University, she worked as an internal consultant at Deutsche Bank and as a General and Project Manager at the Institute for Corporate Cultural Affairs, the World Corporate Ethics Council, and the Society for European Business History in Frankfurt and in London. 8

11 Panel Discussion Life Sciences/Digital Health Angelo Moesslang CFO, Fresenius Medical Care North America Angelo Moesslang began his career with the German Healthcare Group Fresenius in 1995 and was member of the project team that helped create Fresenius Medical Care, a globally active provider of dialysis products and services. Subsequently, he served Fresenius Medical Care in a variety of roles, including Head of Investor Relations, Vice President of Business Development for Asia Pacific based in Hong Kong, and Chief Financial Officer Europe, Africa, Middle East, Latin America. Most recently he was CFO for Fresenius Medical Care North America. He relocated to Boston in Babak Movassaghi VP of Innovation and New Ventures, Flex Babak has over 14 years of industry experience in designing and commercializing technologies. In his current role at Flex, he is the VP of Innovation and new ventures, and the GM of the Flex s new Boston Innovation Center. Babak is a prolific entrepreneur, innovator, and engineer. His primary expertise is in medical device commercialization, spanning ideation through regulatory approval, marketing, and strategic sales. In his previous role at Philips Healthcare, Babak led a team of clinical scientists to establish Phillips as the market leader in cardiac care. He has won various awards, holds 43 patents, has authored/co-authored 3 books, has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and is a judge and mentor for the Masschallange and MIT 100K competition. 9

12 Life Sciences/Digital Health Panel Discussion Caroll Neubauer Chairman & CEO, B. Braun Medical Caroll Heinz Neubauer is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of B. Braun of America and B. Braun Medical Inc. (B. Braun). Located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the company is a global leader in infusion therapy and pain management, and a pioneer in passive safety devices and PVC-free and DEHP-free products. Mr. Neubauer oversees the company s North American operations. He also serves on the B. Braun Global Board in Germany. Mr. Neubauer is currently the Chairman of the German American Chamber of Commerce New York. Nick Dougherty (Moderator) Program Director, PULSE@MassChallenge Nick Dougherty is Program Director for PULSE@MassChallenge, where he is focused on facilitating active collaboration between high-impact digital health startups and key stakeholders within the healthcare ecosystem. Prior to this, he was Co-Founder and CEO of VerbalCare, where he designed patient-centered communication platforms for providers and both verbal and nonverbal patients to improve shared decision making, healthcare management, and patient engagement. He was named General Manager in 2015 after VerbalCare was acquired by Medical Specialties Distributors. 10

13 Panel Discussion Manufacturing Innovation Sven Doerge Global CFO, Goss International In his current role as Goss International s Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Doerge provides financial leadership to several manufacturing locations in US and Europe as well to 8 owned Sales & Service units. Goss International is the leading global manufacturer of web offset printing presses and finishing systems for newspaper, magazine, packaging, catalog, and other commercial applications. Since 2014 Mr. Doerge is a Board Member of the German American Chamber of Commerce New York and serves on their Audit & Finance Committee. James Heppelmann President & CEO, PTC James (Jim) Heppelmann is the President and CEO of PTC. He also serves on PTC s Board of Directors. Prior to his appointment as CEO in 2010, Mr. Heppelmann served as PTC s President and COO, and from 2001 to 2009, he served as PTC s CTO. Mr. Heppelmann joined PTC in 1998 when the company acquired Windchill Technology, a company that he co-founded and served as its CTO. Before co-founding Windchill Technology, Mr. Heppelmann served as CTO at Metaphase Technology. Mr. Heppelmann attended University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor s degree in mechanical engineering. 11

14 Manufacturing Innovation Panel Discussion Katharina Krause CEO & President, F.O.S. Industrial Filter Technology, Inc. Working in challenging environments describes Katharina s business career since the beginning. The at that time new GPS business was the first industry she served. After helping a couple of startups to grow internationally, finally working in a leading position at TomTom. Since 2013 she manages as President and CEO the newly founded US subsidiary of the German based F.O.S. Group, living in Boston and bringing green technologies to the United States. Bodo Liesenfeld CEO, Liesenfeld International GmbH Chairman of the Board, Menck Windows Bodo Liesenfeld is Managing Partner of Liesenfeld International GmbH, a private investment enterprise. For nearly 30 years, he was CEO and Chairman of German-based Rohde & Liesenfeld, and international air and sea freight forwarding group with global presence. He is the Honorary Representative of the City of Hamburg to the Northeast of the US and since 2006 presides the German Latin America Business Association as Chairman. Since he made his primary home in Boston in mid 2009, maintaining presence in Hamburg, he became a Fellow at Harvard s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. 12

15 Panel Discussion Manufacturing Innovation Stephan Schmitt Member of the Executive Board of Management, TÜV Rheinland AG After completing his studies, Stephan Schmitt joined TÜV Rheinland AG in 1986 as a technical expert based in Japan. He held various management positions in Asia before transferring to the USA in 1996 to become President & CEO of TÜV Rheinland of North America with responsibility for the business in the USA, Canada and Mexico. In 2009, he additionally took on the role of Chief Regional Officer North America and member of the Group Executive Council. In October 2011, Stephan Schmitt was elected a member of the Executive Board of Management of TÜV Rheinland AG. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the GACC New York in Dr. Andre Sharon (Moderator) Executive Director, Fraunhofer CMI Dr. Andre Sharon is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Boston University and Executive Director of the Fraunhofer USA Center for Manufacturing Innovation at Boston University. He has accumulated over 20 years of experience, both academic and industrial, conducting research, developing, and deploying computer-controlled automation systems, devices and instruments for several industries, ranging from sub-micron, high-precision machinery for optoelectronics, biotech/biomedical and renewable energy to food processing and high-speed assembly of consumer products. 13

LeMay is the Executive Director of the German- American Business Council of Boston, Inc. a non-profit, member-based organization of professionals which supports German-American business.
