People can volunteer through two different programs: the Ambassadors and the Moonlighters. Ambassadors play a key role in Starlight's daily operations. They assist with venue tours, auditions, Broadway and concert ushering, cast parties, guest information, horticulture, special events and more. The Moonlighters program provides non-profits, teams, and other fundraising groups a creative and engaging way to support their cause. Groups over the age of 18 can volunteer as hosts, ticket takers, and ushers in order to raise funds for their nonprofit while also giving their cause visibility and learning more about the ins and outs of putting on a show at Starlight. 1

2 Young Friends of Starlight, Starlight's young professionals organization, also provides its members with volunteer opportunities all summer, and are an active part of Starlight's moonlighter program. 3 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Starlight Theatre is dedicated to producing, presenting and promoting an exceptional arts experience by delivering accessible live entertainment for all audiences, superior theatre arts education, and community outreach program. Background Statement Presenting Broadway entertainment since 1951, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Starlight Theatre Association is Kansas City s oldest and largest performing arts organization. The Association operates, programs, and maintains the largest stage in the United States, as well as the 16-acre Starlight Theatre complex. While assuming all annual operating costs for the complex, the Association also raises funds for capital improvements and a variety of programs, including national Broadway musical performances, concerts, community outreach and education. Since 2000, the Association has contributed more than $25 million of privately funded improvements to the Kansas City, Missouri owned Starlight Theatre. Each Broadway season, Starlight makes over 14,000 performance tickets available for regional non-profit organizations serving the disadvantaged. Starlight Theatre received the 2013 Venue Excellence Award given by the International Association of Venue Managers. From , Starlight was continuously selected as the "Best Live Music Venue" as awarded by Visit KC. In 2016, the theatre was named "Best Outdoor Concert Venue" from 435 Magazine and received the silver award for "Best Theatre" from Ingram's Kansas City Business Magazine. For several years, Starlight has also received "Favorite Live Show" from KC Parent magazine. The theatre seats approximately 8,000 and is located in Swope Park. Impact Statement Starlight remains committed to promoting excellence in the art of musical theatre and believes that collaborations are vital to maintain thriving programming for children and families. Starlight collaborates with the Kansas City Zoo to host the Act Like an Animal Camp program, a summer camp that welcomes more than 120 campers each year. The Blue Star Awards, an outreach program modeled after Broadway s Tony Awards, recognizes area high school student s involvement in the performing arts. The Blue Star Awards impacts over 5,000 participants during the school year. The Starlight STARS of Tomorrow training program allows 7th-12th grade students the opportunity to enjoy workshops with professional performers from Starlight's Broadway season as well as perform in major community events including at Zona Rosa and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Starlight seeks to expand access to professional theatre performances by raising funds to help keep ticket prices affordable. Starlight also aims to provide metro area students with the training and skills they need to be successful in all levels of theatre performance. With guest attendance at almost 300,000 each year for Broadway shows and concerts, Starlight creates jobs and positively impacts the local economy. During a time when many people struggle to find work in the arts, Starlight employs hundreds of local musicians, actors, and stage crew workers each year with hundreds of additional jobs available every season for support staff. Because patrons travel to Starlight from around the country to attend shows, Starlight funnels considerable tourism dollars into the local economy. With the financial support of donors and patrons, Starlight seeks to heighten its profile and extend its reach well beyond the borders of Swope Park. As the Starlight brand moves throughout the Kansas City community, financial needs increase. Philanthropic gifts equip Starlight to serve the theatre lovers of today and tomorrow. 3

4 Needs Statement Unrestricted support of Starlight's Annual Fund which helps meet the operational and administrative needs of the theater beyond what ticket sales cover. Participation and support of Starlight's Annual Benefit Gala. Tickets start at $375 with benefactor opportunities available. Focused support for education and outreach efforts as well as scholarships through the Shining Stars of Education program. Increased subscriber base to support all of Starlight's performance offerings. Increased support of Starlight's endowments. Starlight is always making capital improvements. In the past 5 years, we have added four new fans spread around the seating area, a new sound system, a new education pavilion for rehearsals and performances, and magnetometers to increase safety measures. CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement The Starlight Theatre Association Board of Directors comprises community leaders who have a passion for the mission of this landmark theatre blending music and the arts within the community it serves. The composition of the Starlight board is broad-based, and its members accept responsibility for defining the strategic direction of Starlight. The theatre s professional staff excels at developing the tactics to implement and accomplish Starlight s strategic direction. This solid partnership of board and staff is respectful of the expertise of each individual. In addition, the theatre is supported by a broad base of community volunteers, known as Starlight Ambassadors. The board at Starlight is conscientious about its role of oversight and accountability for sound financial management of our theatre facility. The partnership between board and staff is successful in leveraging private support for the benefit of this public facility. Starlight provides 364 tickets for each Broadway show performance. The tickets are used by area not-for-profit groups that might not otherwise have access to live theatre. We seek to make the Starlight facility available for community organization use for various events year-round. Educational programming for our community is also an important part of the mission of Starlight Theatre. Many Starlight patrons can think back to their first date, an anniversary or other celebration as their initial Starlight memory. Our board has a responsibility to keep Starlight available as a community resource, and to always be a fondly held family experience. 6 Programs Programs Broadway & Concert Entertainment Description Starlight Theatre s annual summer series features national Broadway tours, local productions and a wide variety of concert events. The original Starlight stage was constructed in 1950 as part of Kansas City, Missouri s centennial celebration, making Starlight the oldest and largest outdoor performing arts venue in the metropolitan area. In addition, it is one of only three remaining outdoor theatre venues of its kind in the United States. Contributions and corporate sponsorship help to close the gap between earned revenue and expenses. Although production costs continue to escalate, Starlight remains committed to keeping its ticket prices affordable. Each year, Starlight presents anywhere from 5-9 Broadway shows appealing to a diverse group of audience members. Shows often include a mixture of classics and newer titles, and also give subscribers flexibility with the recent addition of weekend specials, thus allowing them to swap into a weekend special and out of one of the main Broadway shows. Starlight also regularly has more than 20 concerts each summer, including everything from classic rock to today's hit-makers, and even some laughs from touring comedy shows. Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Musical Performances Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By A growing network and national presence has resulted in 5-9 quality Broadway productions and up to 28 concerts each year. Growing tickets sales with new subscribers and attracting a more youthful following for the Broadway and concert series will provide an expanding base for the future. Continuing affordability for Starlight patrons would be concurrent with an increasing national profile and reputation for excellence; a platform to collaborate, create, direct and produce original works on the Cohen stage; and an even stronger ability to pull first run tours. Starlight is currently working towards expanding the amount of shows during the regular summer season, while maintaining a high standard for all productions. The venue is also beginning to present shows during the winter season, utilizing the stage s year-round capabilities. Concert bookings enable Starlight to claim a spot as the premier outdoor concert venue in the Midwest. Starlight's young professionals organization, Center Stage, is assisting the organization in retaining the interest of Kansas City's young adults. This group offers discounted tickets to young professionals that are interested in the arts, and also helps raise money to support Starlight through an event called After Hours at the Towers. Number of season ticket renewals; number of single, group, multi-show and concert tickets renewed or sold for a first time; new season ticket subscriptions; number of group sales and/or group special events held in conjunction with concerts or Broadway events; press reviews; annual audience feedback surveys; financial statements that provide a bottomline reflection of programming successes or misses. 6

7 Examples of Program Success Starlight's strong lineup has kept ticket income steady despite a difficult economy. Starlight's relationship with concert booking agency Live Nation has allowed it to present diverse programming, including The Backstreet Boys, James Taylor, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, Weird Al and hundreds more. A few comedy acts have also been recently booked, including Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari and Mike Epps. Starlight measures the success of their core programs by the positive reviews and patron feedback as well as the number of return visits. 7

8 Community Ticket Program Description Category Population Served Short-Term Success The Starlight Theatre Community Ticket Program is designed to provide access to Broadway shows for groups who would otherwise be unable to enjoy live theatre performances due to economic, medical or other restrictive causes. This program, which provides 364 complimentary tickets to each night of each Broadway performance, is available to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations operating in the bi-state area. As it is not possible to assist all interested 501(c)(3) organizations, the focus of this program is to enhance the lives of underprivileged and at-risk youth, the medically dependent or disabled, and low-income senior citizens. This program s tickets are distributed through partnering organizations in order to qualify and track the recipients and their ticket use. Philanthropy, Voluntarism & Grantmaking, General/Other Community Service Children and Youth (0-19 years), Aging, Elderly, Senior Citizens, People/Families with of People with Disabilities For 2017, 123 charitable organizations participated in Starlight s Community Ticket Program. 15 new groups were a part of the program in 2017, including Boys & Girls Club, Compass Health Network, GIRLY Inc., Kansas City Boys Choir, KVC Kansas, LEGACY, Newhouse Shelter, Restoration House, River of Refuge, Rockhill Academy, SAVE Inc., SIDE Inc., St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Synergy Services Inc. and Vineyard Neighborhood Association. The estimated value of tickets given away to the community in 2017 is $290,000. Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The Community Ticket Program makes nearly 17,000 free tickets available to Kansas City area charitable organizations. The program has existed since the city-owned theatre s chartering and has provided thousands of Kansas Citians the opportunity to enjoy professional musical theatre at no cost. The number of new and returning organizations that apply to participate in the Community Ticket Program; the percentage of actual usage of tickets by individual organizations; as indicated earlier, the program is largely focused on organizations that serve underprivileged or at-risk youth, the medically dependent or disabled, and low-income senior citizens. 9 Educational Programming Description Category Starlight Theatre's year-round education programs include: the Bob Rohlf Summer Internship Program, which provides internship opportunities for college students; the Vincent Legacy Scholarship, which underwrites the cost of vocal, movement and acting instruction for ethnically diverse students; Starlight STARS of Tomorrow, a training program in musical theatre for teens; Act Like An Animal Camp, a collaboration with the KC Zoo (5-10 yr olds); Camp Take-a-Bow, (11-14 yr olds); Spring Break Camp & Frosty Fun Days, short-term instruction during school breaks; master classes for advanced students; Just Imagine, an interactive theatre experience for children in hospitals, shelters or child service organizations; and the Blue Star Awards, recognizing achievement in high school musical theatre programs in KC. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other General Arts Education Population Served Children and Youth (0-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Qualitative short-term success for the education programs include enrollment and attendance measures as well as satisfaction ratings from parent surveys. For example, the Act-Like-An-Animal camp seeks to enroll 60 students per session, with enrolled students attending 90% of the classes. Quantitative long-term success is measured by how many children receive a specified number of hours of quality, high-level instruction, mentorship and guidance in the business of musical theatre. Qualitative measures relate to how those programs increase opportunities for area children to learn and grow in the musical theatre industry. The spectrum of educational opportunities provided by Starlight form a seamless continuum of instruction for children and teens. When students in the summer camps continue their education in the arts by auditioning for the Stars of Tomorrow program and enrolling in master classes, individual growth is apparent in the student's ability to learn and perform in musical theatre; coincident effects pertaining to self-esteem, selfconfidence, and ambition are also key measures. These programs have an impact on the greater metro community in that they support and sustain the art and performance community in Kansas City. Program Success Monitored By Starlight's education programs are monitored by thorough supervision of outcomes by the Education Director, Amy Reinert. The tools she uses to track success include parent surveys, adjudicator reports, and statistics regarding student enrollment, participation, and satisfaction. Information about the progress and career path of education program graduates is also maintained, especially with regard to the Vincent Legacy Scholarship recipients. On occasion, program graduates return to Starlight as staff. The Education Department's most recently hired Education Assistant actually began as a Starlight Education intern and came back to help with many of Starlight's camps. 9

10 Examples of Program Success The Blue Star Awards serve as a valuable motivational tool, encouraging students to work harder to achieve success. Written feedback is thorough and unbiased, guiding the student on areas needing improvement. From the parent of a Blue Star participant who received feedback over a threeyear period: The feedback from my daughter s first lead as a sophomore stung, but it put a fresh fire under her & gave her specific things to work on. In her 2 nd year, the feedback had very little sting (evidence of growth), but still no nomination. This caused her to dig deep. She studied the feedback for a peer who WAS nominated. She discovered that confidence can make a performer inaccessible to the audience; all characters must have vulnerability. This became her #1 goal for her third lead, and she was delighted to have it recognized by an adjudicator. She is now directing musicals and continues to reread the adjudicators comments to guide her in her work. The feedback is absolutely priceless. CEO Comments The Cohen Community Stage, which was completed just prior to Starlight's 2000 season, greatly enhanced Starlight Theatre's ability to present high-quality entertainment, as evidenced by the national tours of Miss Saigon, Aida, Les Miserables and many more. Importantly, it also gave Starlight Theatre and Kansas City a heightened national profile in the professional theatre industry, as the national tours of 42nd Street and Thoroughly Modern Millie began on our stage...the first time in Kansas City's history that a national tour originated here. We have since grown to offer programming year-round by offering Starlight Indoors, which features small comedies, musical, parodies and other unconventional shows inside Starlight's heated performance space of the Cohen Community Stagehouse. The growing number of concerts and the level of recognized artists indicates that Starlight is high on the list of preferred venues when agents are booking future tour routes. Education continues to be a top priority as Starlight expands its programs for young people each year and continues to research new opportunities to reach out to children and young adults interested in the performing arts. Starlight also remains committed to the growth and expansion of its community outreach programs that provide access to live performing arts and the one-of-a-kind Starlight entertainment experience. 10

Organization Comments Private support from individuals, foundations and corporations toward operations and capital improvements at Starlight Theatre is critical. The cost of Broadway programming continues to escalate, yet we maintain ticket prices as low as $15 AND provide 364 complimentary tickets to each Broadway performance to not-for-profit organizations that provide subsistence services to their clientele. The opportunity to enjoy a live Broadway performance is more accessible at Starlight than at any other performing arts agency in the Kansas City metro and perhaps the country. Financial statements reflect our fiscal responsibility and operational stability; our ongoing fundraising efforts reflect our commitment to continued program expansion and outreach to our own community. To that end, Starlight has formed a special group of donors who are committed to supporting and expanding the overall educational programming called the Shining Stars of Education. In order to be a Shining Star, donors make a commitment of at least $1,000 to the overall education fund. These philanthropic gifts provide 20

21 assistance to Starlight s educational programs: Starlight s Blue Star Awards, The Vincent Legacy Scholarship Fund, The Bob Rohlf Internship Program, Starlight STARS of Tomorrow, Just Imagine and the growing number of camps and classes. All Shining Stars are listed in Starlight Theatre s Broadway program books.
