2 Today s speaker was introduced by Bernadette Schwerdt Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. Glenn Flood the dynamic, energetic chef who has worked with some of the biggest names in the culinary world. Glenn cut his teeth in food media during the Channel 10 hit reality series Jamie s Kitchen Australia where he worked closely with fellow chefs Tobie Puttock and global icon Jamie Oliver to inspire disadvantaged youth through food at Fifteen Melbourne. As Training and Development Chef, Glenn designed and implemented a unique training program that not only taught young people the skills to become first class chefs but also had a profound effect on every aspect of their lives. In 2011 Glenn led the MasterChef test kitchen team as food producer. His affiliation with the hit series has been ongoing since day one. Initially involved with the recruitment of judges Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston, Glenn also put contestant hopefuls through their paces leading into the competition. Glenn is the 'chef's chef and is a food consultant to some of the biggest names in the restaurant business including Bruce Mathieson's AHL Group. Glenn started his talk by saying that we should surround ourselves with the right people, this was said in the context of what he does to help the under privileged youth and his own life experiences. Glenn said that cooking was an age old craft and said that countries such as France & Italy have refined their food for centuries but Australia was a young country where cooking was concerned. He stated that he has 21 years of experience, was initially trained in Sydney then worked in Europe and the UK and worked with Michelin star rated restaurants and Chefs. Glen then left Europe and came back to Melbourne worked as a corporate Chef where he had to manage staff and take care of costs, he said he worked for Fifteen Melbourne training youth as a coach, mentor and trainer. He presented a short clip of Jamie Oliver taking youth out of the street and training them, including youth from dysfunctional families. He related the story of a young man who was training under him to be a Chef but had an unclean uniform and while talking to him about the need for cleanliness found out that this young person was sleeping rough on the streets. He said that a lot of the young people he train have gone on to get married and lead successful lives as Chefs. He said everybody loves to eat good food and it is great fun to prepare even though if he is preparing a meal for somebody important it can be stressful. He finished by saying that it is not only the presentation but the quality of the food that matter and has a lasting impression on people. Other matters Maurice Mollica is trying to dispose of his vast stamp collection, if anybody is interested please contact Mauri either via or phone.

4 Kenya Container Delivery Success Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. Welcome back Connie Maina! Connie has just returned from a 2 ½ month trip to Kenya. During this time she was able to oversee the release of the shipping container and distribution of its contents from Mombasa to Nairobi and beyond, to a number of hospitals and schools. The goods were donated and packed through DIK and the distribution in Kenya was assisted by the Kenyan Flying Doctor Service free of charge. Goods transported included 40 automated hospital beds, numerous Days4Girls sanitary kits, spectacles, paramedic emergency medical bags, educational supplies including laptop computers with the total value in excess of $AUD 200,000. Connie reported that the recipients expressed gratitude and excitement during a ceremonious formal handing over of the hospital beds and other goods. The distribution of goods received coverage in mainstream newspapers praising the efforts of RCE. The Rotary Club Of Essendon was acknowledged in an article in the national newspaper in Kenya (see attached photo of a Kenyan newspaper clipping). Connie also received a telephone call from the First Lady of Kenya offering thanks and praise for the good work that had been achieved. The benefits of the container will be felt by many people. Congratulations Connie for all your effort in making life better for people in Kenya on behalf of RCE. Special mention also of John Odgers and Jenny Foster for their great contributions to this project at the DIK end! Report on the NewHope Kids The kids were treated to a Christmas party in All the kids are progressing well and they were all promoted to the next level in their respective schools. Two kids graduated from primary school to secondary school and they did very well in their exams and got admission to the schools by merit! 2016 Club Delegation Trip to Kenya Plans for Kenya 2016 in September are still on. Expressions of Interest are being sought for a follow up trip to Kenya. There is more for RCE members to see now with the visit to the institutions that received the equipment.
