1 Profiles of the Speakers Welcome Mr Marc Miller, M.P. for Ville-Marie-Le Sud-Ouest-Île-des-Sœurs, Canada Marc grew up in Montreal and graduated from McGill University in Common Law and Civil Law. Before his election to Parliament he practiced mergers and acquisitions at Stikeman Elliott, with a focus on international and commercial law, having also worked in both Stockholm and New York City. As a Member of Parliament he currently seats on the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development and chairs the regional Quebec Liberal caucus. Marc has been involved in several charitable and pro bono legal initiatives and served in the Canadian Armed Forces as an infantry section commander. Marc has also authored articles on constitutional and human rights law and he has been active within the Liberal Party for many years. He also holds a Bachelor s and a Master s degree in Political Science from the University of Montréal. Norbert Hauser Chair of the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria Norbert Hauser has had a distinguished career in government and public service, including as Vice President of Germany s Supreme Audit Institution. He served as interim Inspector General at the Global Fund in and as a member of the High-Level Panel that created a blueprint for reform at the Global Fund in He began his career as a lawyer and prosecutor in Germany, and served for more than 20 years as a Member of the Council of the City of Bonn, and 15 years as District Mayor of the Borough of Bonn-Bad Godesberg. He also served as Chairman of the Panel of External Auditors of the United Nations and as External Auditor of the International Atomic Energy Agency, among other positions. 1

Ambassador Pio Wennubst Assistant Director General, Head of the Global Cooperation Department Ambassador Pio Wennubst is agro-economist and has extensive experience in development diplomacy. He has worked for the UN in Nepal before joining the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in He has worked for the SDC in Bolivia, Madagascar, Tanzania and Switzerland. From 2008 to 2011, Pio Wennubst was the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Swiss mission to the Rome-based UN agencies. He then joined the Swiss permanent mission to the UN in New York as Head of the Economic and Social Development Team. Since 2014 he is Assistant Director General and Head of the Global Cooperation Department of the SDC. 2

Dr David Reddy CEO of Medicines for Malaria Venture Dr David Reddy has been CEO of Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) since January Under his leadership, this not-for-profit research foundation has brought forward five new antimalarial drugs and broadened its malaria-drug pipeline to include nine novel drugs in clinical development. In addition it has received Board and donor endorsement of a 5-year strategy focused on developing new medicines to address the unmet needs of vulnerable populations Prior to joining MMV, David was a Vice-President in the Global Product Strategy unit at F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd, Basel Switzerland, where he served as Pandemic Taskforce Leader. Prior to that he was the Global Franchise Leader for HIV/AIDS at Roche, where he oversaw the successful development and introduction of enfuvirtide, the first HIV fusion inhibitor. He was also responsible for developing Roche s HIV drug access policies and initiatives. His résumé includes over 20 years of Pharma experience, including successful leadership of drug development teams, licensing and alliance management, product and disease area management, market analytics and business planning. His roles also included interfacing with governments, NGOs and patient advocacy groups around access to medicines for priority diseases. David holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Auckland, New Zealand and a post doc from the Freidrich Miescher Institute in Basel. 3

4 How can we sustain long-term commitments to achieve universal access to treatment and a transformative research agenda? H.E. Dr Lilianne Ploumen Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Government of the Netherlands In 1983, while still at university, Lilianne Ploumen became a community outreach worker in the Crooswijk area of Rotterdam. Two years later she joined the Institute of Psychological Market Research (IPM), working in the statistics department and as a research project leader. IPM focuses on research-based consultancy. In 1995 she founded Ploumen Projecten, an organisation specialising in market research and innovation for commercial and non-profit clients. In the same year she also began working as a fundraising coordinator for Mama Cash, an international fund supporting women s initiatives, going on to become director of the organisation from 1996 to From 2001 to 2007 Ms Ploumen worked for the development organisation Cordaid, first as head of quality and strategy and later as director of international programmes. She was Chair of the Labour Party (PvdA) from October 2007 to January On 5 November 2012 Lilianne Ploumen was appointed Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation in the Rutte-Asscher government. Dr. Ploumen holds Master s degrees in Social History and Strategic Marketing Management. 4

5 Dr Christoph Benn Director of External Relations, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Christoph Benn is the Director of External Relations at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He has been responsible for building and maintaining good relations with all Global Fund partners and mobilizing resources for the Global Fund almost since its creation in In this role, he has been managing the replenishment conferences, securing long-term commitments from donors and spearheading innovative approaches to resource mobilization including (Product) RED and Debt2Health. Christoph Benn has more than 20 years of experience in global health. As a physician with special training in Tropical Medicine, he was the doctor in charge of a hospital in rural Tanzania. Following additional training in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, he worked as an advisor to many health programs in Africa and Asia. He also has extensive experience in advocacy working with NGOs around the world. He co-founded the AIDS advocacy network, Action against AIDS, in his home country, Germany, and was the first board member representing civil society from developed countries when the Global Fund was created in

6 Innovation in affected countries: what are the constraints and where are the opportunities? Dr Alex Dodoo, Associate Professor, Centre for Tropical Clinical Pharmacology, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Ghana Alexander Dodoo is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Tropical Clinical Pharmacology, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Ghana. He is also the Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Advocacy and Training at the University of Ghana and the African Collaborating Centre for Pharmacovigilance which coordinates pharmacovigilance activities across Africa in collaboration with all stakeholders including the African Union. Alex Dodoo is an expert in medicine and vaccine safety and leads African and global efforts for safer medicines and vaccines. He is a member of several global advisory and/or expert committees on medicines and vaccines including: Chairman, Strategic Priority Group of WHO s Global Vaccine Safety Initiative; Member, WHO Advisory Committee on the Safety of Medicinal Products; Member, WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence and Member, Access and Product Management Advisory Committee, Medicines for Malaria Venture, Geneva. Dr Dodoo is the author/co-author of over 55 peer-reviewed articles and has published one book titled: Healthy Secrets a layperson s guide to health issues. Profile of the African Collaborating Centre on Pharmacovigilance 1 The Centre in Accra was created with a focus on providing pharmacovigilance training in African countries, building capacity promoting advocacy and strengthening reporting. The Accra Centre has organized fellowship and internship programmes, attracting fellows from several African countries. The Centre also develops, hosts and maintains a pharmacovigilance Toolkit. The Accra Centre works with the WHO/SAV to provide support for countries conducting cohort event monitoring (CEM) and other active surveillance studies of new medicines and vaccines

7 Mr Sherwin Charles CEO, Goodbye Malaria Sherwin Charles is trustee to Nando s Philanthropy Foundation, and co-founder and CEO of Goodbye Malaria, and African initiative to eliminate malaria in Southern Africa. Previously, Sherwin has spent the last decade as Director in Nando s Group fulfilling various financial roles including Treasurer of the group, and parlaying his passion in social issues to support the company s foundation in its work. Prior to joining Nando s, Sherwin spent 15 years in banking and financial services both in South Africa and Nigeria, including serving as CEO of Restfin, a funding corporation for franchisees. Profile of Goodbye Malaria 2 Goodbye Malaria is an initiative started by African entrepreneurs who believe that African creativity can solve one of Africa s biggest problems. The initiative helps to raises funds that go directly to support on-the-ground malaria elimination programs in Mozambique, spraying houses to protect families from contracting malaria. Goodbye Malaria also seeks to inspire people to join our fight against malaria by educating them that elimination is ultimately possible

8 Closing Mr Éric Théroux Assistant Deputy Minister for Policy, Francophone and Multinational Affairs, Quebec Department of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade Éric Théroux was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister for Policy, Francophone and Multilateral Affairs at the Quebec Department of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade in November A public servant in the Government of Quebec since 1987, he has mainly worked as a legal advisor for the Quebec Department of Justice, the legal director for four departments (Economic Development, Innovation and Exportation; International Relations; Intergovernmental Affairs; and Tourism) and a director of public law. He was also Director General of Multilateral Affairs and International Commitments at the Quebec Department of International Relations from 2006 to 2010, and Assistant Director General for Planning, Policy and Intergovernmental Relations at the Quebec Department of Employment and Social Solidarity from 2010 to With a bachelor s degree in law from the Université de Montréal and a master s in law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, he is also a member of the Quebec Bar. 8
