1 WHERE WILL Dear Potential New Member, Congratulations on your decision to participate in the Interfraternity Council Recruitment RECRUITMENT process. You are currently starting a journey that thousands of Syracuse University men have gone though in the past and I hope that you too will make the decision to join fraternity life as they have. When deciding what advice to give you all as a group; we both thought about how we felt when we were standing where you are currently it was a mix of fear, nervousness, and excitement. We both implore you to, during this TAKE process, YOU? come in with an open mind and judge fraternities on their specific tangible merits. We have no doubt in our minds that at least one of AY you will find a new home in a chapter that you had not previously considered. Making the choice AXP to Go Greek was one of the best decisions of our lives. This yy is truly an exciting time and we wish you the best during this process. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us. axa Matthew Rose President, Interfraternity Council AEn eam James W. 2 Dear Potential New Member, I N T E R F R AT E R N S Y R A C U S E 1916 U N I T Y C O U N C I T Y I V E R S I L Congratulations on your decision to participate in the Interfraternity Council Recruitment Process. You will have the opportunity to join a very historic Greek community and follow in the footsteps of thousands of previous Syracuse University leaders. We hope that you will make the life-changing decision to join a fraternity and become an active part of our community. As you explore the different IFC fraternities during formal recruitment, you will be exposed to various rumors and stigmas about our organizations. We ask that you proceed through the week with an open mind and base your judgements off of your individual experiences and the tangible merits of each fraternal organization. These personal experiences are what truly define a fraternity and are instrumental in finding the right culture fit for each member. Many prominent members of Greek organizations have found a home in a chapter which they may have never considered prior to formal recruitment. During your journey through the process and integration into your respective organizations, you will develop a strong connection to your fraternity, the greater Greek community, and the university as a whole. Being a member of a fraternity will accelerate your personal development, your campus network, and create a connection to generations of fellow Greeks who have come before you. Making the choice to join the IFC community was one of the greatest and most formative decisions of our lives. This is truly an exciting time and we wish you the best during this process. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to any members of the IFC Executive Board. 4 Glossary Bid: a formal invitation to membership. Chapter: a chartered undergraduate or alumnae group of an international fraternity or sorority. Colony: status of a new chapter prior to installation. Legacy: the grandson, son, or brother of an initiated fraternity member Philanthropy: service project or charity undertaken by chapters on a campus, community, or national level. New Member: a member of a fraternity who is learning the history, traditions, and goals of the organization; he has not yet been initiated. Potential New Member (PNM): any man who is interested in joining a fraternity. Recruitment Guide (Rho Chi): a neutral representative of the Interfraternal council who temporarily disaffiliates from his chapter to guide and support potential members through recruitment. Mandatory Chapter Rounds: the two days where PNMs can meet the brothers of each chapter at their houses or designated locations. Each PNM will be assigned a group with other PNMs and two Rho Chi s, who will take their group to half of the chapters one day and half the next day. The goal of the chapter rounds is for the PNMs to gain an understanding of each chapter. The mandatory chapter rounds help PNMs decide which chapters to return to for the open nights. Open Nights: an additional two nights where PNMs have the opportunity to return to chapters they choose. The open nights are a way for the PNMs to interact with the brothers of the different chapters for a longer period of time. Invite Night: the day before bid day, when chapters extend invites to the PNMs of their choosing. If invited, PNMs go to that chapter to interact even more with the brotherhood and get the best understanding of the chapter(s). Not every PNM will receive an invite, but the ones that do have the opportunity to receive a bid. Bid Day: the last day of Recruitment, when potential new members receive their invitation, or bid, to join a fraternity. It is an exciting day when potential new members meet their new fraternity brothers and begin the new member education period. The new member education period marks the transition from a PNM to a new member as he goes through the process of joining a fraternity.

5 The New Member Education Period The new member education period can last a maximum of six weeks from Bid Day. During this time, you will learn about the history of the chapter, the national organization, and other fraternity and sorority organizations at Syracuse. Many scholarship, philanthropy and social activities are planned by each chapter to help new members get to know the brothers, and bond with the other men in their new member class. Time Commitment Being in a fraternity is a significant time commitment. As a new member you can expect to attend weekly meetings, community service projects, brotherhood events, and social events. While being in a fraternity will be one of your many commitments to SU, you should make it a priority. Your fraternity experience will be what you make of it the more you put into it, the more rewarding the experience will be. Brotherhood One of the most enjoyable parts of joining a fraternity involved making new friends and forming lifelong bonds with your new brothers. During the first semester that you join a fraternity, you will participate in activities that are designed to orient you with fraternity history and tradition, while working towards initiation. Brotherhood means more than wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and going to social events. It is a feeling and a sense of belonging. Brotherhood is the making of friendships that will last a lifetime. Financial Obligations In considering the financial aspects of joining a fraternity, it is important to keep in mind that membership in a fraternity is a unique and different lifestyle, and one that cannot be easily compared. As there are financial commitments to membership, that should be an important factor in your decision to join. If your parents or guardians are responsible and/or assisting you with membership costs, be sure to discuss this information with them before you decide to join. There are several items and fees, which may be included in one s chapter s dues, but are additional for another. Extra costs may include composite pictures, fraternity pins, t-shirts. Most chapters have payment plans available, so ask brothers for more specifics. Leadership Membership in a fraternity provides numerous opportunities for you to be involved in leadership roles. As a chapter officer, coordinator of a chapter event, or member of the Interfraternal Council Executive Board, you can further develop your leadership skills. Fraternity men are extremely involved in campus-wide leadership activities. At SU the leaders of many campus organizations are members of Fraternities or sororities. You will be encouraged by your chapter to become involved in campus-wide activities.

6 Tips For Potential New Members 1. Be interested regardless of whether or not you think you like the fraternity. You will be remembered, and you may decide you like the group should you go to another event there. 2. Look at each fraternity as a whole; don t judge it by the few men you meet, or by the chapter facilities. 3. Ask questions it helps the conversation and is a sign of your interest. 4. Be mature in your decision making, and be realistic about which members you feel most comfortable with. Do not be influenced by others opinions. 5. Recruitment is mutual you are selecting the fraternity and they are selecting you. 6. Do not interpret any remark made at any event as an assurance of a bid. 7. Chapters are not required to offer bids to legacies. 8. If you experience any challenges during the recruitment process talk to your Rho Chi. 9. Get plenty of sleep. 10. Be yourself, and enjoy recruitment! 11. Keep your options open. Self-Assessment For Potential New Members Are there members interested in the same things as I am? Are the financial requirements within my means? Do I like their philanthropy? Does the chapter seem to be open to new ideas and care about individual members? Does the amount of time they require from a member seem reasonable to me with what I wish to do in college? Does the chapter have an academic commitment? Will they help me succeed academically in college? Does the chapter provide an environment that will encourage me to grow, learn new skills, and develop as an educated man? Would I be happy to be a lifetime member of this chapter?
