2 BACKGROUND ON THE SPEAKERS Chris Agius Mr Agius, is the International Executive Secretary with operational CEO duties for the International IEC Conformity Assessment Systems IECQ covering Conformity Assessment of Electronic Components, assemblies, materials and related processes IECEx covering Certification of Equipment, Services and Personnel associated with the use of Equipment in Explosive and potentially Explosive Atmospheres, eg oil and gas, mining, sugar and grain etc. Chris also manages the Sydney Office of the IEC. Chris has a long standing involvement in the development of National and International Standards and Certification systems and has held various key positions including Manager International Alliance with Quality Assurance Services (now SAI Global) as well Product Certification Program Manager and Group Manager, Electrotechnology which included key roles in the Australian National Certification Schemes. Chris s past experience includes the design, development and commissioning of process control instrumentation; the design of electronic instrumentation and control systems, including installation and commissioning of industrial installations both hazardous and non-hazardous areas; as well as electrical testing and engineering investigation of industrial equipment/electronic equipment and control processes. Chris has qualifications and experience in Electrical Engineering and is a long standing Registered ISO 9001 Quality Systems Auditor, and International IECQ and IECEx Lead Assessor, the author of numerous papers and presentations on the subject of National, Regional and International certification, inspection, testing systems. Aharon Amit Mr Amit became IEC General Secretary on 1 January 1999, having served as Deputy General Secretary since February 1996 and, prior to that, Special Operations Director from Previously he was CEO of the Fiji Post and Telecommunications Ltd. He headed several companies in Israel and was a consultant for a number of European companies. Gabriel Barta Gabriel Barta is Swiss, of Hungarian origin and educated in Britain. A computer scientist for many years, he worked in research and industry and taught at universities in the USA and Denmark. His particular interests in computers were computer language theory, artificial intelligence and telecom applications. As IEC Head of technical coordination since 1997, he has broad responsibilities in technical, management and strategic areas. He is secretary to the Conformity Assessment Board, responsible in the IEC for ISO/IEC JTC 1 (the major information technology standardization committee), and manages various committees reporting to the Market Strategy Board and the Standardization Management Board.

Michel Bourassa After graduation as a Technologist (Electrical Power) in 1969, Mike worked 18 years in the Canadian electrical manufacturing industry and held a number of front-line and management

3 Michel Bourassa After graduation as a Technologist (Electrical Power) in 1969, Mike worked 18 years in the Canadian electrical manufacturing industry and held a number of front-line and management positions in product design, testing, production, quality assurance, conformity assessment, and standards (company, national, North American, international). From 1987 to 2010 he was with the Standards Council of Canada, with the last 6 years as Director of the Standards Branch. In that capacity he oversaw Canada s involvement at both the governance and technical levels of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and related regional organizations of interest to Canada as well as leading the development of policy pertaining to standards in Canada. At the international level he served as Canada s alternate to IEC s Standardization Management Board for 7 years ( ), represented Canada at ISO s Technical Management Board for 4 years ( ), and was active at the Pacific Area Standards Congress ( ). His previous roles at SCC included: management of standards governance matters, serving Canadian volunteers to IEC and ISO as Senior Program Officer, Secretary of the Canadian National Committee of the IEC, and Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Standards Development. Now retired, Mike continues his volunteer work to create a certification system for disabled person - assistance animal teams and enjoys the outdoors in all seasons. Dennis Chew Dennis Chew has been actively involved in international and regional standardization for more than 10 years. He had served as the Secretary to the Singapore National Committee of the IEC before taking on his appointment as Officer in Charge of the IEC Asia-Pacific Regional Centre (IEC-APRC) and setting up the office in As Officer in Charge of the IEC-APRC, Dennis has been actively promoting the IEC and encouraging the use of IEC international standards and conformity assessment systems to both industry and government bodies in the Asia-Pacific region. This included sharing at national and regional seminars and meetings in Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. He also represented the IEC at the WTO TBT regional workshops that were held in Asia. In 2004, the scope of the IEC-APRC was expanded to include support to 5 IEC Technical Committees/Subcommittees. Since then, the IEC-APRC has increased its manpower to 6 officers and now supports 57 Technical Committees/Subcommittees, playing a key role to help ensure that IEC International Standards are developed according to the ISO/IEC Directives and adhere to target dates. With this additional focus, Dennis and his team have actively trained new Technical Committee/Subcommittee Chairmen and Secretaries to ensure that they understand the IEC rules and procedures so that they can effectively lead the standards development work of the IEC. Dennis graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) Honours degree in Matei Cocimarov Matei Cocmiarov has an engineer degree in industrial automation. He worked some 15 years for Swiss and US companies in the field of data acquisition systems, computer aided design, instruments control and consulting in Geneva. He joined IEC CO in 1993 and has under his responsibility various TC/SCs in the area of multimedia, IT, electrical vehicles, industrial automation, r.f. cables etc. Matei is also in charge of ACEA secretariat.

John Hill John Hill is an instructor at Pennsylvania State University in the College of Information Sciences and Technology. He teaches courses in information systems integration, IT project management, and IT systems in the international context, all firmly rooted in standardization. John has 33 years experience in the IT industry having worked in many fields including application software development, product management, systems analysis, and industrial engineering. During the last of John's 20+ years in industry, he worked exclusively on formal standards for Unisys, AMP and Sun Microsystems. John has written and published numerous articles and made many speeches and presentations, all over the world, on widely ranging topics. He has received numerous industry awards recognizing his contributions to standardization. John earned his MBA in Operations Management from Drexel University in 1975 and received a BA in Economics from Millersville University in Peter Lanctot Peter Lanctot has been with the IEC since 2004 and works in the North American Regional Office of the IEC outside of Boston. His duties as Technical Officer include guidance and oversight of 25 Technical and Sub Committees. In addition to his responsibility as Technical Officer, Peter was recently named Secretary of SG3, which is the IEC Strategic Group on Smart Grids. This Group has already published a 150-page Smart Grid standards roadmap, and is currently developing a Smart Grid Mapping Chart that can be used by smart grid project managers worldwide. Peter has a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and a Graduate degree in International Business.

5 James E. Matthews Jim Matthews is director of worldwide standards engineering activities for multiple business divisions across Corning Incorporated. He is responsible for Corning s external standardization activities in display technologies and the optical communications businesses, including flat panel displays, optical fibre, cable, optical components and applications, as well as coordination across several additional business areas. As a Corning employee for over 28 years, Mr Matthews has held a variety of positions in customer engineering, product engineering and test and measurement areas prior to his current role in standardization management and policy, and he was recognized by Corning with a once-in-a-lifetime Division People Development Award. Mr Matthews has held leadership roles in several national and international standards committees, including those in the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T). He has also chaired a number of policy or organizational ad-hoc committees in the standards community. He is active in technical standards efforts on Corning s behalf in flat panel displays as well as optical communications and environmental standards. Mr Matthews received the IEC s 1906 Award in 2009 for his contribution to IEC TC110 on Flat Panel Displays. He is in his second and final term as President of the US National Committee of the IEC (USNC) and a member of the IEC Council Board until December He is also the only candidate for election as Chairman of the Standardization Management Board (SMB) for a three-year term from Jacques Régis Mr Régis began his three-year term as IEC President on 1 January He was a senior executive of Hydro-Québec for more than 12 years, the last seven of which he was President and CEO of Hydro-Québec TransEnergie, North America s largest transmission system. He also chaired the Transmission Council of the Canadian Electricity Association, was Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council and was on the Management Committee of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. Amaury Santos IEC Latin America Regional Manager since Electrical Engineering with over 20 years of professional experience in multinational companies in the commercial areas of business and technical products and systems for low, medium, high and extra high voltage equipment and systems. Jack Sheldon Jack Sheldon has worked at the IEC since 1983 and initially worked in standards development with responsibility, amongst others, for the creation of IEC/TC 100 (Multimedia systems and equipment). He was influential in the transformation of the IEC from a paper-based to a paperless organization was instrumental in setting-up TISS, the IEC s helpline to its community. He currently occupies the position of Standardization Strategy Manager, which includes the secretariat of the SMB (Standardization Management Board), the secretariat of the MSB (Market Strategy Board) and Strategic Development in the IEC. Prior to joining the IEC he worked as an electronics engineer in a number of IT and telecommunications companies in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
